Rauma - my birthplace and hometown. When I moved to Turku where I currently live I started to realize how beautiful and great Rauma is. Good that my parents and other relatives still live there

What a tremendous view of old world Finland. I could have spent a month in those old shops surrounded by cobbestone streets. The places of worship were magnificent! So ornate! Loved the life size statues sitting in church and on the park bench. Activities along the waterfront were so inviting. Mother Nature finally cooperated giving you blue skies and sunshine. The crispness of your footage is remarkable.... crystal clear ..... gorgrous!

Ah, Rauma... The place I was most curious to see you visit, since that's my home town(well, more technically I live right next to Rauma in east, Lappi, which used to be its own municipality[or as we say in Finland, "kunta"], until in 2009 it was joined into Rauma). I'm glad you enjoyed your stay there!

I was born in Rauma almost 40 years ago, lived there half of that and will move back when I'm and older dude. :) There's a camping side in Rauma that is "five stars" and it's very very pleasent, in the sea shore. You should try that with your rv if you ever come back.Hope you had a blast, the waterfront in Rauma is full of stuff to see.
@TravelingRobert6 жыл бұрын
I liked Rauma a lot, there just wasn't enough time to see it all. We hope to return in a few years.

Looks like you managed to miss the commercial center of Turku entirely. It's around the Market Square (Kauppatori). There's shopping centers and the Orthodox church there. The market and square itself were likely fenced off and dug up at the time of your visit. There's going to be construction of a new underground parking structure there, and they were / are doing archeological digs before that. Some of those were really interesting, such as a 16th century cobbled street surface from before the great fire, but that has been removed now. And for the record, Turku is the 3rd conubartion in Finland after Helsinki / capital region and Tampere. Oulu's population number is larger than that of Turku, because the municipality has been merged with its neighbors (Turku has not) and is now huge in area, but the city itself is smaller than Turku. Espoo and Vantaa are also larger than Turku by population, but they are suburbs of Helsinki.
@TravelingRobert6 жыл бұрын
Yes, we missed the Kauppatori and we were so close
@Ex0rz6 жыл бұрын
Espoo and Vantaa isnt really suburbs of Helsinki. But I get what your point tho. They are invidual cities, but we do usually talk of the "capital area".

You can still see the influence of those old wooden houses in modern Finnish detached houses. We don't build them as ornate anymore sadly, modern buildings just aren't that pretty.

You know, you did visit Finland's fifth largest city in the previous episode. (Yes, I know it's hard to believe that when you're in Oulu.)
@TravelingRobert6 жыл бұрын
Oulu was a strangely compelling town. I liked it. Maybe it was the first really good weather day we had.
@hankdasilva38176 жыл бұрын
Travelling Robert You wouldn't believe it when visiting the city center, but Oulu is a city of almost 200 000 people. It's a Finnish city planning thing from last century, even in bigger cities the city center is very small and modest, and most of the population lives in suburbs that are sprinkled around in the middle of nowhere, sometimes as far as 10-15km from the city center. Oulu is one of the best examples of this.
@AndyGrouch6 жыл бұрын
Believe it or not, Turku is actually smaller city than Oulu, in population.
@TravelingRobert6 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I guess Turku is denser and Oulu more spread out
@AndyGrouch6 жыл бұрын
Oulu has urban density of 940 people/km2, Turku has 999/km2, not that big of a difference. Oulu just has really small center but there are many rather densely populated sub-urban areas spread all around the city area.

No, the scene is swedish like. Finland was eastern part of Sweden for 700 years. Russia ruled Finland only about hundred years before Finland became independent 1917.
