The label warning label @ 5:50 does not say "Do not use for drinking". It says "Potable water only". Potable water is drinking water and the label only alerts you to fill the tanks with potable/safe drinking. The water hookups in the campground sites are safe and you can fill up your tanks using an appropriate (usually white) garden hose. What is not safe is when you fill up your tank in the same area where you dump your sewage. Those faucets may only provide non-potable, unfiltered ground water and there is usually a warning sign. You use that water only with a non-food-grade garden hose to rinse out your sewage hoses. The companies that rent out those vehicles are responsible for sanitizing the tanks. Good luck with your future travels.

Thank you! It is something we worried about! But it was not really a hassle refilling the water bottles for coffee and drinking water which to be fair we do in the uk too as when we are on a long hot trip we don’t sanitise the water tanks for months at a time! Loving RV life over here and are sad to be going home.

I think hotels would have been cheaper all considered. It would be nice to know the overall cost of the RV rental.

On balance I think you are right! The advantage that the RV gave us was being able to stay in the forest and park campgrounds in the more wild settings and some of the smaller towns we would never have found using hotels. But wow at times it was not cheap!! Mum paid the rental but I think it was around £1000 a week. Interestingly cruise America in the autumn have some great deals if you hire at shorter notice for you to help them shuffle vans around the country. We were tempted with a 10 day hire at £39 a night to get from Denver to Pheonix and there were dozens of deals all over!

Thanks for these great videos, we are similar age semi-retired couple in the US who bought 28 foot motorhome in 2016, and have since driven it about 30,000 miles through about 18 states ranging from Florida to Wyoming, traveling on average 60-75 nights per year. I really enjoyed hearing your take on American RV travel compared to the European perspective, and I too have experienced that $500+ Walmart shopping spree equipping our RV, as I bought it a thousand miles away from home, and it came equipped with very little other than water/sewer hoses, so I had to buy everything from pots and pans to bedding and food for the circa 4 day drive home.

Wow travelling to Florida, that’s a big trip! We definitely got the travel bug after buying our campervan and spending weekends and longer trips away. European travel is cheaper on the campsites BUT the pitches are usually very small and the sites cramped and very busy. So many beautiful places in the world to discover 🚐

Pricing really does depend on where you travel, and what sort of places you stay, last May we did a circa 3 week, 2,800 mile loop from our home in Louisiana, to the Badlands in SD, over to Hannibal, Missouri, then back home by way of Arkansas, never spending over $55 per night, with 5 nights of free boondock camping along the way, one of which was in the parking lot for Wall Drugs, as we arrived in Wall around sunset and did not want to try and find a place on public land at night, other locations were places that accepted Passport America discount card for $18-$23 per night, a couple of city parks and fairground campgrounds for under $20 per night, and a lake front State park in Arkansas for $36 per night, the highest was 3 nights at Mark Twain Cave campground for $55 per night in Hannibal, MO, So 5 nights free off grid, 2 nights with water/electric only, the rest all had full hookups @@earlyretirementwanderlust

Thanks for the insights. We are hoping to do a multi-month trip in a couple of years. We are thinking it might make sense to buy a small van for the duration of the trip. We have family we could leave it with at the end to sell it. The cost of renting seems pretty high.

We have thought about doing the same in the future or shipping our van out for a year and shuffling between Canada and US but will definitely need to save up for it!

Great insight into travelling in an RV in the US. Why didn’t you boondock more often?

I think in Europe our little vw feels inconspicuous and we use the park for the night app to help find hidden places. The rv felt big and a like a beacon. Daft as it sounds seeing a bloke with an automatic weapon which looked like a sub machine gun on a street corner in Colorado protesting his right to bare arms didn’t help 🤣🚐

@@earlyretirementwanderlust that makes sense. I think I would feel the same.

It is very unlikely the guy had an automatic weapon the permits to get one are hard to get, require things like a letter from the head law enforcement person where you live, and hundreds of dollars in one time tax fees, plus a 3-6 month approval process. It is much more likely he had a semi-automtic rifle, as to your reluctance about boondock camping, keep in mind anyone thinking to do you harm in the middle of the night, are also thinking you might be armed like the guy on the side of the road was.

Very true with boondocking. It was surreal seeing someone with a gun protesting as even our police don’t carry guns!
