Ironwood is meant to be a bulwark. Oz thinks Salem is literally unstoppable. It made a certain kind of sense to put someone who will never yield against an enemy who will never die. Ironwood’s plan is to get Atlas higher than he thinks Salem can reach with the Staff’s power. If the staff is out of reach Salem can’t win. And bringing more people into Atlas risks enemies getting in. There is a cold detached logic to his actions. It’s the detached part of his logic and the fact he can’t course correct that makes him an antagonist now.

Ironwood has been paranoid since he was first introduced in the show; him bringing his army unexpectedly to the Vytal Festival was due to his paranoia. He said to Oscar mid-V7 that stopping Salem was the most important thing, "nothing else matters;" Oscar responded that some things were more important, like their humanity, which differentiated them from her. Ironwood was not exaggerating. Remember that Ironwood said to Watts last season that he would sacrifice whatever it takes to stop Salem (and Watts responded that he hoped Ironwood would). Ironwood was not exaggerating. He's been telling us how far he's willing to go but no one took him seriously enough. Ironwood has never been able to trust anyone but himself to "make the right decisions;" even as far back as V2 when Glynda told him it was high time he trusted others, and his follow-up to that was to go behind Ozpin's back to Vale's council and take more control over the Vytal Festival. And Ironwood HAS been adaptable and creative: his plan to bomb Mantle is adapting to new circumstances and resources. He has a hierarchy of priorities and Atlas definitely ranks above Mantle on that list, but what he's most focused on is stopping Salem and when all else fails, that is his one and only goal. THAT'S where he's hyperfocused and unflinching. Also, y'all are saying Watts pulled one over on Ironwood, but Watts did exactly what Ironwood wanted. Ironwood wanted the vault open so he could use the Staff. It just so happens that Salem has the same goal, wanting the vault open to take the Staff for herself. If Penny hadn't been able to resist Watts' programming, she would've done exactly what Ironwood wanted. The Gods' power is why Salem can't die. Ozpin's magic can't change that.

I’ve seen a lot of people say that Ironwood’s plan to hold Mantle hostage is such a far departure from him previously. But the reality is he already made the decision in volume 7 to condemn Mantle to death by trying to lift Atlas into space. The only objective difference between his two plans are, inaction vs. direct action. In Ironwood’s mind, the people of Mantle are already as good as dead thanks to Salem so he has no qualms about sacrificing people who are already going to die, in order to, in his mind, save the world.

@mauseratti2262 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't think Ironwood is acting out of character in the slightest, he has always been extremely paranoid and concerned about the bigger picture, ever since he was introduced in vol 2 when he thought the crime wave going on in Vale and Salem's big play would be stopped by aiming a big gun at them. He already thinks that Mantle is a lost cause, RWBY and company are just delaying the inevitable in his eyes and he is not about to risk the people that he CAN save to appease a few city blocks, he will loose no sleep for finishing an agonizing ally if it'll means that the rest get to live. No more mercy means no more weakness, Salem's greatest strength according to him. Also in regards of his semblance, given that all actions of his have been in according to his characterisation I'm inclined to believe that it doesn't actually guide his actions but rather empowers them, like he pushes through the pain in the Watts fight; it turns him into a missile guided by his beliefs instead of his beliefs being guided by his semblance. He never was a clean cut good guy, and his actions reflect that.

I still want to know how long Ironwood has had two seats on the council. Because we know that Atlas allows worker abuses, faunus discrimination, and child slave labor. We also know Jacques considered Ironwood a friend until the dust embargo, so it doesn't sound like Ironwood has previously done anything that would hurt the SDC's bottom line (like pushing for worker's rights). So I have to wonder if that's because Ironwood has only very recently had enough power to get his way or was this yet another hint that Ironwood was never going to care about saving these people? (The other option is that Ironwood tried to get things changed but couldn't get the third vote he needed to side with him but that would have been good to know!)
@wilmerventura78862 жыл бұрын
I think your on the right track, Ironwood would turn a blind eye to the SDCs wrong doings as long as they supplied dust and most likely funding for new weapons like the paladins, their partner ship only broke down because of Ironwoods increasing paranoia Also Ironwood cared more about stopping Salem and “saving the world”than anything else, he clearly cares not about the living conditions of the people he’s “saving” which is what The entire Mantle conflict was about I’m hoping the Arrowfell video game can address some of the things we didn’t get to see in Atlas, not saying that it makes up for it not being in the show but I’d appreciate the added lore value

Where some might fall or turn back from exhaustion, he'll keep going. This is one quality that's important for leadership, as it allows him to explore all options for success but also very dangerous ethically. His only objective here is basically "survival", (because "vanquishing" Salem has already been confirmed to be impossible to him, thus the leaving the only survival as the only alternative). Not of all, survival period, and thus he's putting aside everything that might diminish those chances, and ready by all means to do it, even tho those are still being guided by fear.

I agree it's fucked up. But I understand why Ironwood is doing what he's doing. If Salem gets all the Relics, the Gods will come back and destroy the world. Ironwood wants to keep at least 1 Relic out of Salem's reach so that Salem's goal will be impossible. Sacrificing a City in the process. And this was all apart of Salem's plan. In Volume 6 Watts mentioned that Ozpin would be able to get through to Ironwood. They planned on turning his own trauma against him so that he'd become the very thing he's always fought against. Doing most of the work of dismantling Atlas for them until they needed to strike the final blow.

Fun Facts Fact 1: This is the first episode of RWBY to come with a photosensitive warning at the start of the episode. For epileptic people, the moment in question is when Oscar destroys Monstra, and lasts from 2:53 to 3:19. Fact 2: On February 17, 2021, Kerry Shawcross announced that, due to the severe winter storm wreaking havoc in Texas at the time, the release of the tenth episode of the Volume would be delayed by a week to February 27 to focus on the production team's safety. Fact 3: Caroline Cordovin and the Colossus are seen on an Atlas Military poster in the underground station. Fact 4: The scene between Ironwood and the Ace-Ops was supposed to be staged around his main deal but was later changed to the central table to make the blocking flow better. Connor Pickens found it funny that they had been building up to Ironwood smashing his desk with the number of times he'd slammed his fist into it only to end up destroying the table instead. Fact 5: Originally, the scene where Yang's Group contact Blake after Monstra's destruction was placed after the Ace-Ops were shown recovering from the explosion. The shot of Neo skipping through the haze was used as a bridge between the scenes. It was moved to later in the episode to help with the pacing. Fact 6: It was hard to write the scene where Yang's Group lead Emerald down the subway tunnel as they needed to balance how harshly they treat Emerald with how she eventually needs to be comfortable enough with these people to join them permanently. Fact 7: The lighting in the subway tunnels reminded Connor of the Apathy scenes in Volume 6. Fact 8: In one version of the script, Ruby's Group were the ones heading through the subway tunnels to meet up with Yang's Group at Monstra's remains. They would have had to push through large crowds of people who are panicking and trying to evacuate and it was decided that those scenes would be too difficult to animate and would have made less sense than Weiss simply giving them directions to the manor. Fact 9: The sun coming up in this episode is thematically appropriate since it marked a major turning point in Volume 8. Fact 10: For the scene where Yang and Ruby's Groups meet up again, Connor sent the scene from the end of "The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" where the hobbits are hugging before Frodo departs to the animator on charge of the scene, Vince Cavaluti. Connor specified that it was not the scene where all of the hobbits come in and greet Frodo after he wakes up in bed. Fact 11: Kiersi Burkhart loves the detail of Blake covering her cat ears when the high pitched emergency tone sounds. Fact 12: Ironwood's spotlight was inspired by a "Predator" promotional image where the Predator was over-lit, which Connor gave to the animation department while working on this scene. Fact 13: Ironwood's bright blue eyes contrast with the otherwise desaturated image in the spotlight to create a cold atmosphere. Fact 14: It's implied that in order to get the image of Ironwood they wanted, different renders with different lighting were composited in post-production.

Ironwood: "Bring me *all* the dramatic lighting!"y
@KdeeBUBBLES4442 жыл бұрын
I think this might be my favourite episode of the show PERIOD especially from a directing standpoint, from the opening where the bomb goes off to the Watts monologue to the lighting in Ironwood's broadcast its all just excellent. It's a shame y'all don't like what they're doing with Ironwood, and while i think it could have been done better i don't really view it as a character assassination (especially not Bellamy level my god) cause he's had all these traits since Volume 2 it's not like it's all popped out of nowhere in V8. He's always been giving Dictator Vibes, and tbh the only reason he's a "good guy" is cause he's anti-Salem, a lot of his actions in any other context he'd be immediately viewed as a bad guy. There's just parts in V8 that are a bit too "cartoonish" that can be a little hard to swallow if you were hoping for him to turn back to the good side. I've always thought Ironwood would turn into an antagonist eventually, but that never stopped me from liking him in the same way that i like Salem. He's a cool (mostly) well written character, no reason to be salty just because he turns bad, the difference lies with whether or not you find him an unlikable villain and stop enjoying his screentime which varies from person to person. Also if you'll notice Ironwood says he promised to defend "this kingdom, its technology, its future" but makes no mention of the people.
@KdeeBUBBLES4442 жыл бұрын
A quick fix in my opinion would have been having at least one scene where Winter wholeheartedly tries to reason with him. It will almost work but ultimately fail (whether its cause some more bad news interrupts or something else idk) and then he continues with the "must protect relics" path that he's on now. It'd be a chance to actually show someone he cares for trying to get through to him (cause its frankly ridiculous that nobody does), and it'd be a chance to give Evil!Ironwood some more nuance, cause i can agree that he becomes a little one-note once his turn happens. Additionally it would add more emotional weight to their fight in the finale.
@RectPropagation2 жыл бұрын
@@KdeeBUBBLES444 "cause its frankly ridiculous that nobody does" - He literally murders a guy for accusing him of being afraid. He shot Sleet _right in front of them_ in the first episode of the volume and you're surprised on one wants to confront him?
@KdeeBUBBLES4442 жыл бұрын
@@RectPropagation except that doesn't seem to bother anyone enough for them to waver until much later in the volume and it doesn't stop Marrow from confronting him in episode 11 when Ironwood is clearly MUCH further off the deep end. You cant have it both ways. And im not saying i wanted Winter to come in swinging like Councilman Sleet or Marrow, im just suprised the writers never had her calmly try and talk to him (even early in the season) when they're clearly very important to eachother and that is likely something she would do. Some rando barging in and yelling at him about his decisions is not gonna have the same effect as his daughter-figure urging him to see reason like sorry those are false equivalencies. Im content with Ironwoods arc as-is, I was just suggesting it as something that would possibly improve it for people that were unhappy with his portrayal.
@RectPropagation2 жыл бұрын
@@KdeeBUBBLES444 Of course they're bothered by it; it scares them into compliance until Marrow's had enough. A character finally getting angry enough to stop being afraid is not trying to have it "both ways". And I didn't make a comparison between a conversation Winter and the confrontation with Sleet. I said that it's unreasonable to expect anyone to try to reason with him after witnessing him murder the first person to question his martial law order. It doesn't matter how well he would have responded to Winter talking to him; it matters whether Winter thought it would be safe to do so and it does make sense that she didn't.

The reason ironwood was put in that position was because his semblance of doubling down means that he would do whatever it takes to protect people But ge was kept in the dark about so much once he was shown how impossible the situation was his purpose became futile It's a die an idealistic hero or lice long enough to see yourself become the villain They never thought someone so bent on justice and protecting the people could turn that into a poison

Ironwood has no reason to care about them fighting Salem. All he’s ever wanted to do is leave but RWBY and friends make that impossible and haven’t been helping Atlas. Even the whale plan was just to get Oscar. So in Ironwoods situation he’s fighting for his life with no backup.

@@Axel_Kasai they revealed his semblance at the 2020 RTX at home panel. They were only part way done with production of Vol 8 by then. While his semblance does help explain how he got so far down the wrong path, ultimately it doesn't really matter all that much to the plot. It's already clear enough that he was doing those things and wouldn't back down, it's not really necessary to know why he was like that. It could just as easily have been another reason.

Not gonna lie, i really didn't like how the show handled the team RWBY vs Ironwood conflict this episode. What used to be a conflict about people having different aproaches to solving a situation regarding a possible world ending threat, with both sides making valid points became about Ironwood going nuts, so Ruby's side is now in the right by default. Literally everything that was causing their conflict was solved: Salem got taken out of comission for a while, stopping the invasion and team RWBY found a way to evacuate the people in Mantle. But, i guess we needed to extend the conflict.
@mermidion75522 жыл бұрын
i mean, the whole series was always "Ruby is Right by Default" it is one of the points that really aggravated me about this show. if Ruby had a different opinion than any grownup than obviously it turns out that the Inexpierend kid is right and the grownups are wrong cause the kid happen to be ruby. There is one episode to come, where she loses it a little (and only very little for a very very brief moment) before she gets right back to handling everything and being right. i mean the show did not only mistreat ironwood but also Ozpin...and Crow... it really isnt hard to see a pattern here

Sadly the reason it doesnt make much sense is because the writers were desperate to make him a villain, so he had to start doing irrationally stupidly "evil" things to get it across to the audience. Its literally Good vs Evil in this show, no grey area. You are gonna notice that in a bit when Emerald says a certain line. Its what a certain youtube says, you either 100% with Team RWBY or you are a villain.

Ironwood only gone on the deep end because of of team RWBY lying behind his back if they would've told him the truth when they first got here he wouldn't have been a cartoon villain and they could've stayed and worked together with him instead of them just shifting the blame onto Ironwood. He wouldn't be a cartoon villain and he wouldn't need to bomb Mantle but no them RWBY had to lie to him just because they didn't trust him and yet when Ozpin didn't want to tell them the whole truth he thought that they would hate him and not trust and look at what happened what he predicted actually came true but no team RWBY has to be the ones that are in the wrong they can never take fall or blame for themselves they always have to put on someone to make it seem like their the good guys just take up responsibility for yourselves for onve come on now.

True team rwby didnt handle that situation correctly but you cant expect them to self reflect right now. And that doesnt excuse Ironwoods actions either. Hes still in the wrong no matter what happened to get him there.
@TheAngelofFate172 жыл бұрын
Exactly and this is why I call team RWBY and co hypocrites but not in a hateful hater way. Speaking on logical terms they are looking at it logically, hypocrites. Because they bad mouth Ozpin for lying and keeping secrets and then they go around and do the exact same thing. They go along with keeping secrets and then Blake and Yang keep another secret by talking to Robyn. The only one who called them out on keeping secrets is Oscar, which makes complete sense. And the sad thing is that by the time they decided that keeping secrets was a bad idea it all had boiled over, Ironwood was at his breaking point and by then it was too late.
