In that scene, when Jaune carried Qrow out of harms way, as Qrow grabbed Jaune's hand and looked at him, I always felt that look said 'take care of and protect my niece'. With Jaune's look back of assurance 'I will'. No words needed. Everything conveyed in that moment. At least that's how I saw it.

I don't know if somebody mentioned it, but Ren was voiced by Monty Oum, until his passing. Something about his brother taking up the roll in his stead, just makes this whole stretch of episodes hit harder.

Fun fact (for the time): Qrow and Oscar are voiced by Vic Mignogna and Aaron Dismuke, who also voiced Edward and Alphonse Elric respectfully in the anime Fullmetal Alchemist (2003). So Qrow telling Oscar he's a pipsqeek was a cool easter egg throwback.

Back in the first episode the blacksmith said he made all the special modifications Jaune asked for. At the time we thought it was just adding Pyrrha's metal but now you see there was more to it than that. With adding the weight of the shield it becomes a much heavier sword which leads to slower but much stronger and damaging swings.

Nora was able to take on the Nuckeleve night traume better because her life was awful enough before that night, but that night she met Ren, and that was the most important day of her life, where Ren feels darkness, Nora finds light, and that's why they complement each other so well.

I will never be able to keep tears in for Ruby’s monologue in this episode after knowing the lyrics of each of the themes that play throughout it that accompany the meaning of what she’s saying 🥺 From a storytelling and lyrical perspective it is so powerful but even beyond that how the lyrics and meaning allude to Monty’s passing and what everyone close to him and in the community is also feeling is even more powerful 😢

The scene of Ruby's letter contains so much subtext, because yes Ruby describes what she feels, but when she talks about lost people and those who exploit them, on screen we have Ilya and the two fox brothers member of the White Fang for example, easy to understand the allusion here. That's the kind of thing I like about RWBY, a lot of things are said by what happens on screen more than the dialogue and it's always nice when a series does that in my opinion.

If you want a reminder of just how Juane is physically, a shield that size in the real world is usually 20 pounds and is mainly wood. His is all metal plus the mechanism for swapping means he's swinging at least 30 pounds around when he combines it, probably closer to 50. A battle-ready claymore is 7 pounds for reference.

- And now you finally get to behold the Nucklavee in all it's freakish glory. - It's a lot harder for Ren to use his semblance at a distance. - Jaune finally gets to show off another upgrade (though he _still_ lacks a ranged attack...) - Jaune pissed it off, so now the Nucklavee goes to full power. - (6:05) Nora didn't get knocked out, but her aura broke. she's vulnerable. - Ren's a little berzerk. And there goes his aura. - yeah, the Vol 3 ending scarred a lot of the FNDM. 🤕 - Once Qrow was given the anti-venom, he doesn't really need a hospital just rest and a chance for his aura to heal him up.. the cut wasn't bad, it was the venom that was doing the damage. - you mentioned that we hadn't seen much of the dapper looking villain? 😈

Congratulations on completing another volume of RWBY! It’s been a LONG time since you started, and it’s been one crazy journey so far, but it’s not over yet. And man, was this episode PACKED! A battle for survival against one of Remnant’s more disturbing Grimm. Ren getting some much needed closure. Team RNJR finally reaching Mistral, and Qrow surviving. Ruby’s touching letter. The rest of Team _WBY slowly coming together. Oscar/Ozpin reuniting with Qrow. And a massive “Oh Crap!” twist to end on. Oh, you wouldn’t *believe* the amount of shock that went through the FNDM when they first saw it.

God that instrumental of Boop leading into Home just kills me. So, now that we’ve made it through V4… I think a lot of my problems with this volume is the pacing. And I get it. This was their first volume with an entirely new animation engine, so they had to build the entire show again almost from scratch. The world of Remnant had opened up so there were a bunch of new locals and characters, and we had separate storylines to follow. Up to six different plot threads to keep track of. I understand this is a lot to balance. I also just have issue with a lot of the character choices and writing, specifically with Tai and Sun. Man was I so annoyed by Sun this volume. They could have toned him back a bit and actually let Blake have moments with her parents outside that one talk with Ghira. And Tai… I just…I can’t with him. The whole reason Yang put her arm back on is because she overheard him implying that the only reason he hadn’t gone after Ruby himself was because he had to look after Yang. Except, when she’s “ready” to go out and look for her sister, he’s like “okay, have fun. I’m gonna sit on my thumbs and hope to hear how it goes.” And from like an overall standpoint I get that they just want Yang to join the Ruby storyline and they don’t want the dad hovering but… it’s still really crap. Not to mention his “quit moping” comment still just… rubs me the wrong way. I don’t have too many issues with Ruby or Weiss’ plotlines… maybe just that Ruby could have had a more prominent role? BUT BUT BUT that is not to say this volume doesn’t have some good stuff in it. The introduction of Raven was a good scene. I love Kali and Ghira. They are literally the best parents ever and they must be protected at all costs. Ghira’s talk with Blake (before it was interrupted) is probably my favorite scene of V4. I love seeing the Schnee Family dynamic, hints at what Mama Schnee is (drinking in the garden, huh?). The overall animation and lighting has improved so much with the switch to Maya. That scene where Ruby is walking in the forest at night with the fireflies is so gorgeous. The fight scenes are really floaty at points but I give them SOME slack because it’s a new engine and they were still figuring things out. Anyway, now that we’re done with my personal least favorite volume, it’s only up from here. See you for the soundtrack, and the Shorts after that.

*WEAPONS* - (UPDATE) Jaune's Crocea Mors (shield gains a greatsword form, trading defensive options for raw power) - Twitchy movements...urgh, good way to up the creepy factor with any creature. - It's Nora's turn to becalm Ren - they've come full-circle. - Glad the sight of Watts in Lionheart's office made your hearts skip a beat. - This Volume's theme is "Recovery". Everyone had to regain their strength after the fall of Beacon - Ruby, Jaune, Ren, Nora, Qrow, Weiss, Blake, Yang, Ozpin, even Cinder. It took a lot of effort and quite a bit of help, but they're all ready to move forward again.

This is something I've heard about but a lot of the reasons that the characters don't act/move to help or really do anything in scenes. Is because this new software they were animating with was still new to the crew and they still hadn't gotten the kinks worked out. That's what I've heard at least

I love that RWBY shows how vital teamwork is. Sure, there are moments where characters fight alone but you saw it with Blake this volume - and with Ren here at the end. It's about "us" not "me" and that is so important. There will be more moments where characters try to fight their obstacles alone but then realise that their strongest while fighting together. And I think that's also how they beat Salem in the end (I mean that in the grand scheme of things) - we saw Ozpin and the other leaders try to do so alone and they fail time and again... I am excited to see how it's gonna play out in the end^^ Also loved your discussion at the end (just like each time) and I am so excited for the soundtrack reaction!^^

4 volumes complete!! Looks like you both were quite entertained. lol While I had issues with this volume when I first watched, rewatching it over time has given me an appreciation of it. The juggling of a new animation, six different character journeys, and limited budget had to be hard AF for CRWBY. All & all, they put together a good volume!! Now, the next one..... It's gonna be quite interesting. And if Ruby's speech really moved you, (Still bought tears for me...) prepare yourself for some moments in Volume 5. No details..... Just prepare, guys. Ken & Beth, I really love your discussions after each chapter. But, today's was one of your best so far. You both take in everything so well and are broad in your views of the show. Fully agree. When I first watched V4 it didn't quite ring my bell like previous volumes. Especially coming down from the emotional high I had from the ending arc of V3. But on rewatch I came to appreciate the daunting task it had to pickup the pieces left behind by V3 to carry the story forward. Spoilers opinion . . . . . . . And thanks to more recent volumes, I have gained a new found respect and appreciation for how good V4 really was. The same goes for V5 for the same reasons.

I think the importance of having several 'boring and mundane' scenes of Oscar inheriting Ozpin's soul is to show the complexity of him being thrust into a random stranger as his reincarnation, and as you will find out, this wasn't his first time. It actually would have been quite cheap if it had not 'dragged out' a bit because also as you will find out down the line, their conflicts in merging together are far from over.

Ren 100% Badass. Nora sold seperatley. This was catharsis for Ren, he finally avenged his family, but also killed this Grimm on behalf of all it hurt and killed. Ren is such a good character. And Jaune came in clutch too holding this horse bastard back on his own when Nora threw herself and Ren under that house. I think Ren is gonna have a lot more peaceful nights after this. (In TFS Roshi voice) I also think he and Nora are gonna share a room if ya catch mah drift! Heh!

Nora and Ren finished that fight with no aura. Brave... or crazy, jumping off a building like that. I assume people with aura don't have to spend their convalescence in the hospital like those without. There's been fanfic that's gone into more detail with such things, like sickness hampering aura regeneration; or that grimmstuff is toxic, and must be burned from the land while huntspeople have to go through a light decontamination when they've finished the job. Up next: team RNJR spend most of volume 5 mucking about in a house, while the other main characters catch up! Literally, in Blake's case, because her story isn't occuring at the same time as everyone else's. Also a fight that makes me angry, every time I see it.

Volume 4 was a wonderful slog through the darkness, emphasizing how lost the characters feel, seemingly aimless after everything that happened after Beacon. It pairs well with how CRWBY was at the time, carrying on with new tech, and without the showrunner. Volume 5... not to color your expectations... was a disaster with highlights. Not in an intentional, narrative sense. It was massively rushed after its budget got embezzled into the pet project of their corrupt animation leader, Gray Haddock. Basically what happened between Colonial Marines and Borderlands 2. The result is that Volume 5 is an utter mess, often embarrassing, with its fight choreography scaled down and rewritten to match their new limitations. It didn't help that they made three action-heavy character shorts that probably drained what little they had for the rest of it. The finale is one of the most important in the series, and it was just a botch that focused on the wrong things. Volume 5 is pretty much THE reason RWBY gets so much grief and is so unfairly maligned, despite the fact that Volume 6 and onward upped the game every season without stopping. I have problems with Volume 8. Specifically one thing, more than anything, because the finale left me traumatized in a way that hasn't faded in over two years and I'm determined to undo somehow... but overall RWBY just keeps getting better, more interesting and more stakes-driven after the awfulness of Volume 5. And don't let anyone lie to you that it only gets worse. Jaded former fans are too invested to let go, and they take out their frustrations on ships and storylines they wanted that never happened. That's how powerfully RWBY can attach itself to you.

Volumes 4 and 5 (but especially 4) are generally regarded as the weakest of the existing ones for a lot of the reasons you talked about here at the end. They aren't bad episodes, but there's a lot that they have to go over that don't quite get back to what people want to see fast enough.

Please keep talking about your problems with the show, it’s fine. Luckily for you you’re going to get one problem fixed per volume now for the next three volumes. Weiss, Blake and Yang Character Shorts next. You may see a fourth one, don’t watch that yet, it’s for Volume 6. This finale teaches a wounded fan base that they don’t have to be afraid of finales anymore… … not all of them.

I'm super excited to see your reactions to Volume 5. Volume 4 is, in my opinion, the weakest. Narratively, it is the most disjointed and at times feels a bit aimless, it was the transition season where they didn't fully know how to go on without Monty and I feel like it shows. Volume 5 was where the show went from being something I tuned into every now and again to needing to watch each episode the day it came out to find out what happens next. The last 6 or so episodes especially. Look for to more RWBY reactions, and hopefully you'll be all caught up when Volume 10 finally gets greenlit for production!

Weiss's brother is nowhere nearly as despicable as Adam. Whitley is a saint compared to Adam whose only redeeming quality is his choreography in combat. Even Cinder is nowhere nearly as hatable.

Ya'll are still one season behind in RWBY Chibi. Now that you've finished Vol 4, you have 2 seasons of RWBY Chibi to catch up on. Also, I say this with zero malice and in a very jovial way: ya'll are being hypocrites, lol. Yang loses her arm, and ya'll coddle her (Awww.... poor baby...). You understand and accept her journey and PTSD. Cinder loses an arm AND an eye (and voice, kind of). Yet ya'll keep dumping on her like she just lost a game of checkers or something. 😂 While you have more of an emotional attachment to Yang, you still have one for Cinder in your disliking of her. As such, one would think you'd be equally understanding of someone's journey/recovery because, again, she lost more physically than Yang, and like Yang, her confidence was shattered.

Now that we've reached Volume 4, this Volume was good. while I don't think it's good as volume 3 and maybe even 2. I can enjoy it. It has problems but it's not enough to wear it don't. Unfortunately this is the last good season of RWBY and at this point the rest of the seasons are either average or just bad in general

Urghh finally the worst of the writing nears it's end. V4 was so drawn out, Characters made decisions that made little to no sense and the team was split, not even trying to find each other....luckily it gets so much better after Mistral
