Great shots of the sunset, moonrise and sunrise! Carrigain! I’m sure this hike created some good memories.

Thank you. Yes, that was my favorite mountain due to the camp on top. I want to go back but then I remember the 5 miles uphill with a loaded pack. You can see everywhere from this peak but you can also see this peak from almost every other major peak. So I just wave at it from a distance.

Outstanding! Brought back fine memories of doing this one with a girlfriend in Oct. 1975. 🙂 Loved the "Introvert preparing to be an extrovert..."

Have always wanted to do a traverse of the Moats- but that's 2 cars. There is a nice loop with just N. Moat and back down Red Ridge. I'll settle for that , if i ever get over there from Augusta. Then a splash in Diana's Baths!
@RachelWhelton10 ай бұрын
The Moats are on my list. I hear about them now and then with people always giving high reviews. Never heard of the traverse idea so thanks for mentioning that. I'll add that to my list of things to research.

I've never been a backpacker as hiking tough trails in the Whites with a heavy pack seems laborious to me. However your sunset and sunrise photos and the whole experience make the effort seem worthwhile! So beautiful. I may have to go and buy a lightweight tent and backpack and give it a try. You really are inspirational!
@RachelWhelton Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the wonderful comment. I would say you are absolutely right about the backpack making it harder in some ways and easier in other ways. For me, buying some lighter weight gear and cutting weight was the balancing point. If my pack gets too heavy then I get grouchy.

Should have been there today but ended up canceling due to all the rain. Would have made fishing tough. Will try to make it up there next year.

Yeah, the weather has been next to impossible. The forecasts have been dismal and hard to rely upon. I've been finding these days here and there but it is hard on the schedule for sure.

I wouldn't worry too much about the grey jays. On the scale of things it's pretty minor. Incredible sunrise - it's hard to beat camping on top of Carrigain for that!

bedframe Youth and alcohol I would guess
@RachelWhelton Жыл бұрын
Turns out the bed frame was most likely part of the fire warden cabin that used to be there. I guess it wasn't worth the cost to helicopter it out of there.

I loved your comments about feeding the grey jays versus having a bird feeder. If I may add to the debate...Feeding bears is a bad idea because it conditions them to raid camps which is dangerous for both bear and human. Feeding grey jays also conditions them to hang around and wait for humans to feed them -- but I have never seen a swarm of grey jays become a dangerous nuisance. The grey jays are happy, the humans are happy, so what exactly is the problem? I'll save up my finger wagging for people who violate LNT. Only my two cents... And I absolutely LOVE your end-of-hike dips. A tradition worth copying!
@RachelWhelton3 ай бұрын
I like that reasoning. Grey Jays and humans have this history for a long time, too. I've cut back on feeding them but when I see somebody do it, it doesn't ruffle my feathers.
@christopherhoff3724 Жыл бұрын
Feeding the Greyjays breaks leave no trace and it is making them and other small animals more aggressive when stealing food. People who think it's okay are either ignorant or hypocrites.
@RachelWhelton Жыл бұрын
Yes, I see that perspective. I am in between ignorant and hypocrite; however I am edging towards saying hello to them but not feeding them, as you see in my later videos but not my older videos. It is not intuitive to disregard the birds' request. When I want to feed them, I remind myself that I do not feed deer or bear.

Oh and BTW thanks for the footage of the creek. That was on my list of creeks to hit while in that area. Looked like nice water. Made me laugh because I will wet wade in that cold water and enjoy doing it for 5 hrs 😂
