More than 80 percent of people in Zimbabwe are Christians, Easter known as “Iphasika” (Ndebele language) used to be a big thing/ celebration when I was growing up. The Roman Catholic Church would have a mass that went through almost the whole township & it lasted for long hours. Although I wasn’t & I am not Christian, it was always fascinating to watch & I would follow the mass because there would be singing , dancing & drumming. Njube Township (where I was born) is a place surrounded by churches like the Anglican Church, Roman Catholic, Lutheran, SDA who also celebrate Easter in their own way. My grandmother was a devoted Lutheran & she sung gospel songs all the time, ymy mother is a devoted Christian, she sings a lot of gospel songs every time so, there was no way I was to escape from the sounds & the gospel harmonies & I love to teach some of the songs as they hold some of the best memories of my childhood. Rwizi Jordan/River Jordan (might not be related to Easter) made popular by the Glenview SDA Group is a song that talks about crossing the River Jordan where Jesus was baptised & the River Jordan has since biblical times been imbued with powerful symbolic meanings: it is a boundary and a crossing point, a metaphor for spiritual rebirth and salvation, and a source of holy water…
I taught this one in Edinburgh last year & this group nailed it 👏🏿👏🏿.
