Very brave to do such a comparison. It's in the ballpark but yeah, it's not exactly the same now is it? There's more 2nd or 3rd harmonic distortion in the SP1200 in general (it sounds "thicker" and slightly louder even if the volume peak is matched) and your LP2 filter is not the correct shape.. still, this is impressively well in the same ballpark.

I like the sound but when a sequencer isn’t planned make the best of it as a sampler and/or effect. Recording straight onto a pad and/or using the signalpad as an effect (like RX950) would be cool. Since I like the sound of the SP1200 (but on screen not the size) the GUI could be made a bit more effective, it’s code, we don’t have to get away with EPROMs and that kind of stuff. Think bigger buttons and less unused grey space. On my MacBook Air (13inch) I can only use the smallest GUI setting, anything above that makes the plugin so big, I cannot access all the controls anymore, making it useless. I don’t want to sound harsh, I really like the sound but still think things could be more efficient for the end user.
@whistletom Жыл бұрын
Why would you use the clunky sampler from the SP1200 when you can just use your DAW? It's literally a plugin so you're already in the DAW and you can drag any sample straight onto the pad.
@bietfriek3601 Жыл бұрын
@@whistletom in my opinion because the clunkyness adds to the workflow, sound and feel of an SP1200. In the original and just as with a MPC60, sounds are cut/trimmed by ear instead of a visual representation of a waveform. You end up with samples that may not start at the beginning but are cut/trimmed because they just sound right. Besides that, in Bitwig I’m not able to drag and drop a bounced piece of audio from my project onto a pad, I first need to save it and dig it up from the specific folder. Being able to load RX1200 as an effect and sampling an input would make that easier. I think the question is what the end user and developer want. Do we just want the sound or a straight emulation? I.m.o. with a straight emulation the sequencer/workflow is part of the deal, hook up a dedicated controller and of you go. When it’s about the sound in a DAW it’s about how you get sound in and/or thru it + the tune function. In that case and at this moment I find the SP950 a better choice, especially since you use it is an effect and because it’s way less space on the screen (only ran a demo of it). When it comes to screen size: On my 13 inch MacBook the GUI on 100% is fairly small and 150% is too big, adding some more options would be very welcome. I also read something about the transients and harmonics well, that’s the magic of the MPC60 and SP1200, they seem to add something punchy. Don’t know what it is, as a layperson it feels like some sort of VCA that boosts the transients.

Part of the allure and what gave the SP’s their sound, was also the sequencers swing, groove and timing, so to leave that feature out is a bit of a miss in my opinion. The user may have wanted to use the SP’s sequencer to drive the host DAW’s clock. All the same, may be a viable software alternative to the real thing or Low Hiss Systems eSPI-1200 which hasn’t really matured or gotten any real follow up support. We’ll wait and see on this one and if Arturia takes the bait and makes their own SP-12/1200 (already familiar with the Emulator keyboard they’ve reproduced).

I had an MPC60 that would also have a “special swing/groove”. What people seem to forget though is that on the MPC60 and SP1200 you have to cut/trim your sounds by ear instead of a visual representation of the waveform.
