I'm 75, it's 2024. Ry has directly and indirectly always been part of my musical life; I consider myself blessed to have lived in these musical times. Mine is the 1st generation to grow up on rock and roll. I loved it in the 50s and love it today. Every day of my life I've been able to find great music to enjoy. I get annoyed by people claiming there's no great music anymore or the 'best' was in the past.

Musician's musician, amazing musicologist and humanitarian. Ry and his music have gotten me through more hard scrapes than I can count. He has always stood for the pure and eternal-people music--in his lifetime. I sing this song all the time and it is totally because Ry sang it and presented it so well.

I am so jealous of anyone who has been to a live ry cooder show....I share the compelling attraction of this guy's uncanny story telling, slide playing, mandolin picking, instrument hot-rodding way of life. Theres alot of us influenced by his stylings.......if he is a dying breed, I am convinced there are a few of you out there who have the key to keeping the ry cooder legacy thriving.

I love Ryland. Been listenin' to him since the vinyl LP, Into the Purple Valley. Not just coz his playin' done showed me stuff how to play plucked musics, but coz he's taught me lotsa things about LA -- Chavez Ravine, the racey fast cars in the California desertlands, riots on Bunker Hill, the lady dressed in white with a white handbag playing a tenor guitar to the cigarette-dangling-from-a-lips loitering unemployeds around Pershing Square. Ry's not just one of the most interesting guitar players, he's a downtown, street & session musicologist and historian. His sense of history informs his sense of the present-day; if that's political, I'll let him channel Jesus any time.

I've listened to and admired Ry since "Safe As Milk". He brought a freshness and a timelessness to Americana songs and World music. I thought he "got" what music was about much more than many of his hit seeking seers. And I have always been fascinated by his seemingly endless focus on unearthing past musical works and the way he finds new ways to present them. I'm afraid Ry is a dying breed, but maybe great organic music can keep on keeping on. Every bit of slide guitar that I do now is 100% derived from Ry's great albums. .

I went to see Cooder live in Glasgow in the early 80's it was Ry Cooder and the Moulah Banda Rythm Aces (legends) He played 2 concerts Fri and Sat and tickets were sold out before the phone lines for tickets opened. I had no chance. However the ticket company contacted me and told me he was doing an extra concert on the Sunday due to demand (sold out the SECC the biggest venue in Scotland) They gave me 2 tickets. When I got there I couldn't find my seat. The venue was enormous. I kept getting waved down towards the front by stewards until I got to the FRONT ROW MIDDLE 2 SEATS. I dont know to this day why they gave me these seats. We made eye contact all the way through the show and it was filmed , the entire show was filmed and I will be in it with my gf but I have never been able to find any of the film footage. If you watch the Sant Cruz concert on here, it was the exact same show and band as that apart from 2 things. At the interval he did not go off stage he pulled up a chair and sat right at the edge of the stage and played acoustic singing Jesus on the Mainline etc. Then the band came back on. The other thing that happened was that he had a guest artist...the guest was 'Harry Dean Stanton' who came on and sang Across the Borderline. I never went to another concert ever after that..........what would be the point. I saw the best guitarist that has ever existed playing the best show ever. Anything else after that would be a crushing let down.

Brendan Tovey. Ry would be the first to admit he learned a great deal from the old blues artists and folk artists that he watched as a teenager. But he is certainly not just some old bloke copying his style. Ry has enriched, preserved, and built on the musicality of many types of music. He has 6 Grammy Awards to prove it and a lifetime, nearly 50 years of music behind him. He is one of the most respected guitarists in the world. I doubt you did any research before you made that silly comment.
