Rya rugs

This video was created in 2011 when an internet search for “rya rugs” yielded only a few results. The rya world has changed dramatically since then. If you google “rya rugs” today you will see over 2 million hits.
Melinda Purcell Byrd and this video have played an active role in the resurgence of interest in the Nordic art of rya rug making. The renewed interest in all things of midcentury modern times as well as the desire to reconnect with using our hands to create art have brought rya rug making back to the forefront.
Since this video was released, Byrd has written a book (almost 9 years in the making) to answer all the questions she has received since this video was made. The book is entitled RYA RUGS-Design and Make Your Own. It is beautifully laid out and richly photographed by Ken Koons, creator of the Handcraftedtradition video series.

Byrdcall Studio now offers all supplies for the off-loom rya rug maker just like her grandparents, the Lundgrens did from 1956 - 1982. After this video was produced, Byrd bought back all of the Lundgren rya supplies from the person who had bought it all and had it safely in storage for over 30 years. She now buys backings and yarn from the Rauma company in Norway. She sells kits, yarn, backing, needles, and her book which explains how to use them all.
Byrd currently operates Byrdcall Studio, LLC by herself and is hoping other rya designers and entrepreneurs will emerge to ensure the rya art continues for decades (or centuries) to come.

My Finnish mother told me that during the wars in Finland, when commodities were scarce and need was great, some families resorted to untying the Ryiji (Rya) rugs to re-purpose the the wool yarn for mittens and other woolen garments for their soldiers in the field. The rugs kept drafts at bay when hung on the walls and were also used as sleigh blankets on cold journeys. What a wonderful part of history and heritage you are helping to preserve! Thank you.

For various reasons, a 4 1/2 x 6 1/2 rya rug I started in the early 70s has been stored 2/3 finished for the past 40 years. Today I set it free. Although I wish it were a different design, I was pleased to see it is nicer colors than I remembered. (No hideous 70s greens) So, I have hopes one of my children will like it enough to want it when I finally finish it. I would love to make another rug after this, with colors and a design of my choosing.

Hi Melinda, I am making a "Rya-style" (Ghiordes knot) on my traditional floor loom. I first watched your video about a year ago and became interested...I am using 5" pieces of jute on a linen warp...I hope it comes out ok, it took me forever to tie the warp, and now I have to make 5 thousand knots !! I am putting in a couple of rows of plane jute twine after a row of knots...thanks for posting this video, especially the history part...!

Thanks. Since I don't know when I'll find my next rya backing, I really wanted this rya to be special--in case it is my last. You are right about supplies being hard to find and expensive when you find them. Most backing material is linen warp and wool and linen weft, but people do it other ways, too. Here is a video shared by Paivatar where she is weaving on all linen. Cricketstomper. I love your enthusiasm for the rya rugs. Since these nice quality backings are no long woven for general sales, it is very dificult to find them except by chance--maybe someone finds one in their attic and lists it on ebay. Last month and this month, I am teaching my last rya rug-making class to some good friends who have received my LAST backings. Happily, the class is being videoed by Ken Koons so the "how to design" details can be seen as a follow up video! Stay tuned.

But with your video everthing is super easy and it makes a lot of fun! I once tried the hook but found it so boring; this is how I found out about this, also even more traditional, technique with a needle :) I love it !

Hi Melinda! My grandmother, mother, and aunt all made many many Rya rugs and my cousin and I many many pillows 'back in the day'. It seems that perhaps our grandparents knew each other as there clearly was so much ordering that happened. There are easily over 30 rugs left in my mother's house. I'm inspired by this video - especially the cleaning part!! Just kidding, though that seems incredibly helpful. My mom just passed away this spring and I'm spending time at her house near N. Conway with my brother and all these rugs. Perhaps there is a rug making experience in my not too distant future! In the meantime, I'll get my camera out....

Hi, Hathorspirit, You could practice knot-making on burlap I guess, but burlap is not very durable and it would be easy to break the burlap fibers if you pulled the yarn through roughly. You could probably make a little wall hanging with no problem. You know, if you put your mind to just about anything, you can creative something new and fun. It might not be a rya rug, but you'll have fun with it and might make a new discovery!

There are little projects you can do mesh it self is like only about $5 or $6 and then the yarn they use is not that much as well. However it all depends on where you live and you get get this at like Michaels and Jo-Ann's and I think even walmart as well. You can even find them on line

Hello, Shirley (Edward, too!) Thanks for your very kind words about my design and "mission" to bring the appreciation of rya back. I look forward to starting you on a small rya project. I am about half way through writing an illustrated booklet that will make learning very easy for you. It is about two to three months from completion. I have found new sources for both backing and yarn and soon will let people know more about what is available out there. I'll keep you and all here informed.

Hi, Dourakigia, thank you for your kind words. Finding the good-and-hearty woven backings is the challenge these days. I'm hoping someone who sees this video may tell us a good source for the backing someday. I will continue selling the yarn through etsy until I have no more. Some people weave their own ryas on loom which means they don't need "a backing". Cheers.

Hi Melinda, I really liked your work and it's a kind of inspiration to me. I am planning to make a rug to surprise my husband, but as I am new to this I don't know what amount of yarn should I bought initially to make a rug of 6*5. Awaited for your help. :)
