just catching up with this stories background. If the hard drive was not overwritten or continued to be used. You may be able to recover files. I am sure this is a little late but if you still have the hd and did not touch it. I am sure you mailed it out to a HD company to see if there is any reminisce of data. I could recover all recordings and project files from my computer, if I formatted the drive and installed new osx. not if I continued using it afterwards.

Yes he should've specified what he wanted returned to him, that's why the court ruled in the favor of the man who found it. Details are important. If he would've said "I want the laptop with the hard drive, I will not reward if the hard drive isn't there" then I would be more inclined to sympathize, but I do not.
