Ok, I haven't watched the rest of the video yet, but I paused at 9:44 and that is amazing! He really did make it all into happy little accidents. That black mark he made on accident turned into the shoreline, and the "undetailed trees" are beautiful, and the look of a reflection that he gave on the water. I mean, I'm stunned. He's been cracking jokes this whole time but that painting is truly really good.

if you watch bob ross and listen, especially in the later series, a lot of what he talks about focuses around how the paint is loaded onto the brush and the kind of strokes you make with the brush and palette knife. when used correctly, even loosely, the brush allows for a lot of organic, unique shapes that are perfect for rending stuff like foliage. the palette knife streaking across the page is great for rock textures. this is how a lot of landscape painting is done; not painting out each leaf and branch individually, but rather letting the brush textures work their own magic. ryan's doing a great example of this; embracing the textures you get from the brush. also, remember if you're trying this out to prep your canvas! working wet-on-wet is the secret to bob ross magic. and also feel free to take a small break and step away from the painting; paintings are meant to be viewed at a distance, not close-up, so don't worry about visible brushstrokes
