In one of the most bizarre build-ups to a fight, Ryan Garcia trolled most of us into believing he was crazy. Instead, he was able to put down undisputed champion Devin Haney 3 times to get the split decision. Here are my post-fight thoughts.

I dont feel the weight was a difference, but as a boxer you NEED to make weight! Great win, but no belts. I know we live in a time where really belts are worthless. There are too many "champions" in the sport. But you are CONTRACTED to make weight. Its really unacceptable

@@brianseneca3546 I agree with you 100 percent, BUT when weights are taken 24 hours before the fight, and rehydration takes place, and if the boxers are at exactly fight time grossly different in weight this seems like a problem to me. Sometimes we know what he fight weights are and sometimes we don't, but with weight loss and gain getting to science level ..I don't know its strange to me. In this fight we don't know actual fight weight. I am not saying Ryan had an edge, I think maybe it was he other way around despite him being overweight on actual weigh in. On Garcia's fight with Tank he made the weight and the rehydration clause, but even so he gained a full ten pounds. So what would we think that the weight of Haney was? With no rehydration clause.

@@Hakuna_My_Tatas Exactly, and we do not know what the fight weight actually was, as they do not weigh right at prefight in NY, but as there was no rehydration clause in the contract, and they (Haney) were the ones so quick to put a bet out there on making weight. My guess they thought they might lose the bet but considered it worth it to make Ryan even more concerned about getting the weight that he would go to low to get the money. It backfired. Sure he did not make weight, but my guess is that Haney still could have been heavier at time of fight. We will never know. In Garcia's fight with Davis, that had a rehydration clause, Garcia had gained a full ten pounds still making the rehydration prefight weight clause. This fight had no such clause. So Haney was free to gain - as was Ryan - as much as they were comfortable with.

Haney wanted to be an exciting fighter instead of his boring, boxer self and paid the price. Due to his power deficit, this is the fight he should've been super cautious but I think he was in denial about what Ryan was capable of. Garcia broke his jaw in the 10th and as good as Haney is defensively, he still has leaks. Ryan's speed and power was the great equalizer Haney had no answer to.

People don't get what Ryan is trying to say through his "trolling". Some of the things he said he meant, but a lot of it was tryna tell people "Don't believe everything you see on social media". People take shit too literally sometimes, when they have no idea really whats going on. I wanted Ryan to win so bad, even though I knew that Devin was the all-around better boxer, has a complete skill-set, and his last performance was great. For me, Haney had to be perfect for all 12 rounds, but Ryan just needed to land one left hook to change the fight, and he did it early. As Mike Tyson said "Everyone has a plan till they get punched in the face"

I called this. And won 40K on Ryan. While most people thought he was crazy, I thought he was brilliant. He set himself up for a win-win. Hopkins almost verbatin gave a response (after the fight) that I anticipated being said if Ryan lose..."imagine what Ryan could do if he was in camp seriously." The thing is, Ryan was in camp seriously. People thought he was crazy for drinking a beer before weigh in. The beer was open already...the natural assumption was that it was a beer, it wasn't. he gave up 1.5 mil to make another 10-15 mil in ppv.

He wasn’t trolling, he’s genuinely showing signs of mental health issues but he was always a competitive boxer vs Devin. Devin had a poor game plan, Ryan capitalized. Don’t glorify what was the most embarrassing and concerning lead up to a fight we’ve seen in a long time. Already made my bets for him to win. I was expecting a round KO by 7 but it continued farther than expected, Reflecting imo helped prevent a true KO

Duran had to lose 50 pounds in 3 weeks for the rematch, but didn't cancel the fight because Leonard was the A-side. Haney is the B-side, so he can't screw with Garcia in negotiations like Leonard screwed Duran.

Devin showed us that he has heart and isn't a quitter. He got knocked down three times and got up every single time. He didn't lose heart and he kept going. That's a real champ right there. We questioned his chin, but he showed us that while it may be weak, he isn't. I can only criticize him for the excessive clinching, but we need to talk about Ryan's shoulder roll and how he basically cheated. He would turn his back to Devin, curving the momentum of the fight in a very unfair way because Haney could only hit his side and back, and the ref said and did nothing about it. Anytime Ryan wasn't doing that, Devin actually racked up points and started to look good. Let's not forget that Ryan was throwing many shots to the back of the head and only got a point deducted. In a rematch with a ref that watches out for that back turn, I feel like that would change the outcome. Never forget, Haney wobbled Ryan in the next round after almost getting knocked down and was neutralizing his hooks as he gained his legs under him and actively punishing Ryan for missing. Did Ryan win? Sure, but this isn't the win he or his fans thinks it is. In a performance review, Ryan did nothing new and took advantage of an unfair loophole with that shoulder roll and coming in overweight. Congrats to both men, but I feel like this fight was really closer than it’s being portrayed.

Harvey Doc was absolutely justified in calling the fight the way he did. Generally the ref won't deduct for the first illegality, but this fight was different given the emotional nature of both fighters going into this. There had to be a no-nonsense attitude from the jump otherwise it would've deteriorated into something wild. Great job Harvey Doc

Neither fighter looked impressive. Garcia fought in spurts and was turning away and avoiding exchanges for the majority of the fight. Haney was content to throw a combo and clinch. The ref was also terrible.

Re weight. In NYC their is no just before fight, post rehydration weight taken. Arguably their was no eight difference at fight time, or Haney could even have weighed more, which is what I suspect. Remember Haney's camp made the bet. They in effect offered him an incentive to make weight, to make him push hard and even come in lower. Why? Why would they do that? Because they knew that 140 and below not actually a good fighting weight for Ryan, and they counted on knowing how well they would rehydrate. How calculated it was to miss weight to aid victory, even at financial loss, and loss of belts, I can't say.

I'm really surprised how most people didn't think Ryans speed and power wasn't a threat. I knew that once he clipped Haney it could change things. Haneys chin has always been suspect and he aint got pop for guys smaller than him let alone his own size. He's never been a p4p fighter, he was never that guy. He gets hit a lot and is very predictable when he rolls and dips to his right. He and Ryan were almost on the same level, difference is Haney's so -called boxing skills was hype for beating Kambosos. And they all made a big deal vs Regis which was the usual easy fight to make him look good. He was a fabricated champ, never elite. Loma already exposed him and absolutely obliterated him. He literally was entitled to a private weigh in to ensure he'd have an advantage of 25+ lbs and size over Loma on fight night and Loma still mauled him. This is KARMA for the robbery. Now people want to talk about Ryan's 3lb over which is nothing considering they both rehydrated. Haney accepted and he was not complaining about anything - this just proved more so how overrated he is. Also he moved up to 140 and still he is too big. Should really be fighting at 147 could even fight at 154 because he rehydrates to 160+. He has always weight bullied.

I think Haney had an off night. He didn't use his boxing IQ and I think he was misguided by his father. The reason it has an impact is that fighters drain themselves a lot to hit the weight and then have to try to rehydrate as quickly as possible. By not nearly killing himself to hit the agreed weight, Garcia probably felt much better and fresher than he otherwise would have. Furthermore, that 3 pounds on the scale would by fight night be considerably more. Now, those are the reasons missing weight is important. I dont say that they were a factor in the fight on Saturday. Nor does it address the fact that Haney is himself a notorious weight bully who puts on loads of weight after the weigh in.

First things first. I'm no fan of Devin or Ryan. I've been in and around boxing for over 50 years. Devin clearly lost the fight at the 3rd knock down. Other than the knock down rounds, Ryan lost every other round. Ryan was rightfully deducted one point for hiring in the break. Ryan should've been warned or another point taken away for constantly turning his back in Devin. That is not a shoulder roll. That is an illegal move they let him get away with in every fight. No different than if I were to keep turning my head so my opponent could not me in the back of the head. Ryan also came into that fight sa damn middleweight. That was clear to see. This is why a weight should be taken the night of the fight. Other than that, Devin got his ass whooped because he didn't display his technical footwork. He got rattled in the first round.

Agreed that Ryan’s “shoulder roll” is sometimes an illegal position. He often completely turns his back to the opponent. It’s like when a fighter ducks below the waist. They put themselves in a position where the opponent cannot legally hit them. Haney does that a lot. Garcia should’ve got a warning for the hit on the break. He’s not known for doing that and it’s how you “tax” a fighter for excessive clinching. Haney never got a point deduction for excessive clinching, which he did throughout the whole fight. Ref was clearly looking out for Haney. He got dropped multiple times in the 7th but the ref ruled them as slips. All you want from a ref is consistency. Call it even for both guys. Haney’s footwork and defense is overrated. He gets rocked every fight. That’s a constant. Has bad footwork so he’s always forced to clinch in order to get a positional reset. Moves back and forth on a straight line and has no head movement. That’s why his jaw got busted. Imo, Haney got exposed this fight. Hopefully he’ll work on his weaknesses and comeback but he needs to stay away from power punchers that are his size. He looked good in the Prograis fight so I thought he was improving. Went back to the old Haney last night and finally paid the price.
