Ryan Villopoto was out at the 2022 Yamaha YZ125 introduction day, showing everyone just how fast you can go on the new two-stroke. After lunch, Ryan, Carson Brown, Damon Bradshaw and Caleb Tennant tested their skills against eachother in a four-lap race. We caught some clips of Ryan going all-out on the 125 with Carson chasing and heard from Ryan, Carson and Damon after their battle. Then, we talked to Ryan about his thoughts on the new bike, if he has any plans to go racing on it and about the current racing going on in AMA Supercross and motocross. Ryan even weighs in about the level of the riders speed nowadays, compared to when he was racing. Also included, we talk to Yamaha's R&D riders Travis Preston and Steven Tokarski, and MXA's Daryl Ecklund has some fun testing the YZ125 too.

Man, it is so good to see Ryan out there running some semi-hot laps again. I cannot tell you how many really great rides he treated us to when he was actively competing. The man really gave everything he had and as a fan I need to tell him we noticed his to-the-wall effort and how he would "leave nothing on the table" when he was done with a race. A lot of people may not realize how difficult it was for him physically and mentally to put it all out there. I'm an old man but my hat is off to Ryan and always will be. Really great upload. I very much agree with Ryan concerning the topic of consistency on the race track.

@@slayer6936 yeah i would love to see a strong MX 175 or 200cc two stroke but that requires a new engine, a 125 can only be bored and stroked to around 160cc before issues start to emerge (namely the cylinders are not thick enough to house that big of a piston

Depends. Want me to be 100% honest with you? The KTM is a better bike. I love Yamaha, but when I hit the races, 95% of guys on a 125 are on a KTM/Husky. They have the most powerful engines and solid suspension. For the average rider this bike is a better choice but for serious racing the KTM is just on top of the game because at the top level guys are really beating these things and every little horsepower counts. I’m sure the factory bikes are different especially in EUropean 125 championship but just my two cents

Ryan vilapoto was the best rider ever on the planet, who beats Stewart,wyndham reed, dungey like he did. I reckon Carmichael would of even struggled keeping up with him if he was around than. When the 450 class came out in 2005 we thought the bike couldn't go any quicker, than Ryan came along. The bikes got powerfully,better suspension, tracks deteriorated more and Ryan nailed it. Man I thought 7 Stewart would never get beaten and Ryan beat him, 4 championships. I bet if he didn't break his tail bone and pressure of fitness, teams etc he would of won more. Hats off to you Ryan, they said Stewart was fastest man on the planet but in my mind he was.

I love Poto but if he thinks his Era was just as deep as now, he's smoking some good stuff. There was a couple years where it was Stew, Chad, Dungey, Canard, K-Dub that could win but now you got Webb,Tomac,Osborne, AC, Dillan, Anderson, Marv, Barcia, Kenny, Sexton. Come on Poto, for real?!?!
@llLeezy

Ok cool I’m not the only one that thinks he’s delusional on that lol he’s a goat but he needs to relax, eras haven’t crossed over like this in forever, in his era tomac, Anderson, barcia, marv etc would’ve already been done but now there stayin around longer so they end up racing the new generation unlike the RC, villo, dungey era. I forgot the stat but there’s like 15 champions on the line right now ain’t no way in hell there was 15 champs on the line when he was racing

I’m sorry I couldn’t agree more with Villapoto. Marv= not champion material any longer, Osborne= missing races, Dillan= still young and IMO not much more formidable than Plessinger. As much as I’m a Roczen fan, even he is predictable and though he’s fast everyone can see by how he’s riding each Saturday if he’s gonna be a winner or barely make the podium (or not…). Sexton, same as Roczen, Webb, same, Tomac, same. I think the older era was a much deeper field no doubt, IMO

I get the sentiment, but seriously for the AVERAGE rider, I really don't know how you'd improve on the existing YZ250 engine. When jetted and tuned correctly, it is just so good. I think the only real improvement I would like to see is an adjustable power valve, but that's unlikely. I think the changes the bike needed most was from an ergonomics and styling perspective, and they accomplished that this year. Still a new engine would be exciting, I agree.

As much as I love ringing out a 2 stroke I can't afford replacing a top end one a month+
@GingersnapRacing
@GingersnapRacing 2 жыл бұрын
1 a month? You must ride a ton. I easily get 20hrs on a top end with vertex 2 ring pistons. Less with a single ring of course. Currently at 10 hours and still runs like a champ. In a typical practice day it’s maybe 1-1.5 hours of engine time. So we’re talking almost 20 full days. Some guys who don’t ride super hard put 40 hours on a top end. The maintenance isn’t as high as people make it out to be. Just make sure it’s not jetted on the ragged edge lean, monitor the crank seals so air doesn’t get sucked in and lean it out, clean air filters and they can last a bit.

@GingersnapRacing
@GingersnapRacing 2 жыл бұрын
@@sethbolin5145 I’m not only getting 20 hours it’s a personal choice to change it. But like I said even 20 hours is a lot more then I put in in a month these days. I can get 60+ out of it if I wanted to but I choose not to. 40 would be my personal comfortable max. Tore down my 350 @40 and it looked solid but the piston skirt had some wear. I’m running a mod motor with a vortex ecu, high compression head so I have a bit higher cylinder temps than a regular stock bike. As someone who’s had a crank seal behind the ignition cover go bad and cause it to run lean and melt the piston @25 hours (luckily in a straight away) I’d rather change it at 20 hours and inspect. Than it melt it on the face of a jump.

I only disagree the 450 field isn't all that's stacked I see more than just a few competitors that are cable for a Win on any given Saturday or Sunday probably more so this years consistency when's the long race but as far as race to win the given race is a little more than more just a coin toss on it would be for a while a 50/50 toss up for a single night win

Villos a goat but he’s delusional if he thinks the class was deeper when he was racing, the 5th place dude when he was racing would get dominated by the dudes running 5th these days n it’s only been like this over the past couple years it was pretty weak after villo left. Tomac, Marv, Osborne, Anderson, barcia etc would’ve retired already in villos era, the eras barely crossed over like it is right now

I mean... he's got a good point. RD raced Tomac, Roczen, Webb, etc and they couldn't beat him for that specific reason, they were too inconsistent. If you've followed the sport for a while, you know that every season is "the deepest field in the history of the sport" we've heard this statement since the McGrath - Carmichael days. There is no denying that there are a lot of very fast guys now, but there's also no denying that they are very inconsistent. RV, RD and Reed were very consistent, then you also had JS7 with the crazy speed and guys like Whindam, Millsaps and Canard who could win races. It seems pretty evenly matched to me.

@@brodyrichard263 Let me give the top 10 from when RV won his last championship in 2014 with their credentials (at the time) and then tell me it's not a debate: Villopoto - 1 lites sx title, 3 450 sx titles - 3 lites mx titles, 2 450 mx titles Dungey - 1 lites sx title, 1 450 sx title - 1 lites mx title, 2 450 mx titles Roczen - 1 lites sx title Stewart - 2 lites sx titles, 2 450 sx titles - 1 lites mx title (23/24 moto wins) 1 450 mx title (perfect season) Barcia - 2 lites sx titles Tomac - 1 lites sx title - 1lites mx title Reed - 1 lites sx title, 2 450 sx titles - 1 450mx title Canard - 1 lites sx title Short - 3 time 3rd place finish in sx and mx championship Brayton - has finished in the top 10 every season (still does) Besides this guys there are still some more that were lites champions like Brock Tickle, Josh Hill, Wil Hahn or Jake Weimer. Also guys that couold challenge for top 5 and podiums like Josh Grant... I'm not taking anything away from the level of competition that we have today, there is no question that it is stacked, but it was stacked back then too, and to say there is not even a discussion IS taking away from how stacked the field was then... Like I said, Dungey beat all these guys 3 years straight, and RV had Dungey covered. Make of that what you want.

@@eliasvaldes82 it is so refreshing to talk to someome who actually knows the sport and cares. Me and you could get along very well lol ..and i do agree to an extent i dont think you are wrong, but i think some of the "stacked field " nowadays has a lot to do with social media making these guys really popular verses when you're referring to these guys were known strictly for their speed so at the end of the day it's probably apples-to-apples this field is always Stacked and its pretry hard to conpare even based of of official results but i do think raw talent these days for the top ten riders is far more than we have ever seen but maybe not race results and you could even say it's harder to be consistent now because of the depth of talent so it truly is hard to gauge but my personal opinion is if you take a still shot I'm the main event gate now versus and RVs Hay Day I really do believe that there is more talented Riders but social media as also these guys in the spotlight more so it's really hard to judge the Raw Talent I think 2022 is the best we have ever had
