0 legroom, exorbitant luggage prices but when flying from home to uni and back with just a backpack it is truly the best. and the only airline that operates a direct flight on that route. I have also experienced ridiclus delays a number of time and the reimbursment/food money for 6 hours of delay was barely enough to buy a banana at the airport. The difference is, Delta is the hardcore champion of Landings...................Ryanair is the champion of hardcore landings. You have to applaud their social media admins though. Any issue or big news and they use it as a source for their advertisements. Some of my favorites include one where Trump's son couldn't use the Presidential transport since the former lost elections, and Ryanair displayed prices and routes which they believed would please him. And even in F1, multiple times after crashes you could see the admin chewing on their performances, and turning them to makeshift Ryanair ads. Say what you want about their landings, but companies would kill to have their PR team😂😂

The reason Ryanair lands so badly is because they do higher approaches than normal airlines to reduce the risk of a tail strike that's why the have to slam the ground to not go-around or overrun

How would a higher approach reduce the risk of tail strikes ? You'd have to often flare harder to arrest the descent ? Also, would they be allowed to do such things, these would be considered unstabilized most likely and they could not use standard glideslopes for the ils approaches ? Unless you consider catching a false glideslope a good approach x)

I'm thinking the same thing. If your goal is to avoid tail strike, you need to reduce your angle of attack, and there is not 100 methods to do that (increase lift, by increasing speed for example). The reason behind the hard landing is not here.

you forgot to mention the reason they land hard. since they only operate out of minor (regional) airports the runways are shorter and therefore less room to land, so they have to land so they need as much space as possible so they don’t run off

So…I’ve seen a lot of people mentioning Ryanair when talking about bad landings. I just thought the airline deserved a bit of a defense as to why that is. To start off, the 737 is an inherently difficult plane to land. Along with the large amount of drag from the flaps, the plane’s fuselage has been stretched quite a bit since the original 737-100 was built, meaning center of gravity and the amount of room to flare has been significantly changed. I have flown may airlines’ 737-800s, and never once has the landing felt perfectly smooth. The main reason for Ryanair’s specific targeting is because their landings are often noticeably firmer than others. Many people blame the airline and/or their pilots for this, stating that Ryanair does not train them so they do not know what they are doing and can’t put it down smoothly. I will say they are directing the blame in the right place, but for the wrong reasons. When compared to most other airlines’ landing procedures with the 737, Ryanair probably has the safest. The pilots are trained rigorously and up to every standard they need to meet, and know exactly what they are doing every time they land a plane. Ryanair flies into many different airports in many different countries and climates, with fast turnarounds and high passenger demand. This means the pilots need to be able to land no matter what the weather or runway condition/length. So, Ryanair trains their pilots for so-called “positive landings”, slightly more firm than most others, but by far the safest. By getting the plane on the ground in an efficient manner, they are ensuring the safety of the flight and reducing the runway and brakes needed to stop. The planes are perfectly made to take it, and it is actually following Boeing’s SOP when it states that “a soft landing is not always a safe landing” (yes they actually write that in there). I hope this shed some light into what has become a meme in the community (both IFC and aviation in general), and next time someone talks about a Ryanair landing, maybe you can let them know how lucky those passengers were to be on one of the world’s safest 737 landings ;)

top tip: you wanna fly with a cabin bag for cheap and a nice flight? go lufthansa, second option, think its called economy classic, been doing it for a while and i get a cabin bag, food and drink on board, booking my seat, I fly to austria maybe five times a year and if i book two or three months before it costs me ~£160 round trip with bags and the window seat the whole way, never had a hard landing or nout, sooooo I like it (Oh and actually landing in the place you want to go, rather than bumfuck nowhere and a 30 quid taxi ride to your actual destination)

I'm gonna step in and point out one positive thing about Ryanair (even though I would never, under any circumstances, fly with Ryanair): They are at least honest, they don't try to make it seem like they offer full flight services between their destinations. And Ryanair was founded for a good cause, to open up european air travel to the cheap folks. Also a quick fun fact: Ryanair flew an estimated 20% of europe's population last year!

Some planes just land better than others, MD-11s were also notorious for landing firmly. With the 737-8 and the NGs, you have to remember the airframe is based on an aircraft that was never initially designed to be as long as if it now. So the newer, longer 737 models have an increased risk of tail strikes. So Boeing calls for more subtle hold-offs/flares which results in a greater descent rate at the time of touchdown. 2# Ryanair frequently lands in smaller, more regional airports, requiring different techniques for landing for short field operations. The majority of the braking power is in the wheels, so you need to get the wheels on the ground, and more importantly, get as much weight on the wheels as quickly as possible for safety to allow for margins and failures etc. 3# Boeing actually calls for ‘firm landings’ in the technical manuals. I quote “Do not allow the airplane to float: fly the airplane onto the runway. Do not extend the flare by increasing pitch attitude in an attempt to achieve a perfectly smooth touchdown.” Basically instructing the pilots to fly the aircraft into the ground and have a positive landing and not try to extend a flare or put too much thought into trying to be gentle. 4# Weather and contamination. It’s not enough for the wheels to be kissing the runway, you need to force them onto the ground with enough force so that your aircraft doesn’t start hydroplaning and skidding across the runway, that’s why the spoilers are deployed the moment the main wheels touch the ground, to kill as much lift as quickly as possible so more weight is on the wheels.”
