Neil Gaimon summarizes this phenomenon with some writing advice he's given over the years. If you find yourself struggling to complete an important task, whether it's a creative one or not, sit in a room and do nothing. Do nothing until your brain itches to do something and then you'll feel like doing the task.
@KoshVader
@KoshVader Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure that would work for me because my imagination can take over. Once I had a story idea I thought about so intensely I couldn't concentrate on anything else. I had my laptop in front of me to study along with flashcards and I ended up lying on my bed for hours looking up at the sky and thinking of my story.

something similar to this is called "urge surfing". instead of doing the thing your brain wants to do instead of the task, you sit and wait for the urge to go away, and the lack of dopamine will supposedly make your brain bored enough to give up and continue doing the task you were trying to work on before

The way I see it there's three of me. First one is an asshole who is a bit of a task manager, but to a fault. Like not entirely socially there kind of focused. Usually he'll barge in with an idea that doesn't really gel with anyone but myself, but has the gumption to get things done after distracted me figures it's easier to harvest pumpkins in MC or it's time to buy another bit of hobby tech I'll do nothing with. Third me usually then has to rebuff both. Solo projects get annoying.

Literally anything in life is comedic material for Ryan.
@Lostmymind1
@Lostmymind1 Жыл бұрын
I want to give him a carrot, and see where he takes that situation. And I don't mean a metaphorical carrot on a stick. I mean a literal carrot. Orange vegetables that everybody says improve your eyesight, but really that's just a myth started by the British as a way to trick the Nazi's from investigating what Radar is. No seriously, that's where that rumor got started. Carrots and propaganda helped kill Nazi's, and I think that's pretty cool. So now I want to give a carrot to Ryan George, and see where he takes it. Hopefully nowhere sexual. Ya know what? I hadn't even considered the sexuality of the Ryans in the Ryan universe. Are they bi-sexual? One of them got married to, and then divorced Julie Nolke. But the vast majority seem to not have girlfriends........and in some videos, we've seen their offspring look like a spawn of satan, which would be explained by relatives having offspring. Can't be more related to you, then sleeping with a clone of you. Yet the adult Ryans all look normal. Which means the horrible offspring qualities must get ironed out as the Ryans age. Although, maybe it explains why everybody is Ryan. What if Ryan is just in a room, imagining all this stuff, under the care of a mental hospital, and Julie is like his case manager? And the movie pitch guys are just all in his head after he sees a movie? I am putting TOO MUCH thought into this. I'm just giving him a carrot, and moving on with my life.

Were you on drugs when you wrote this? Cause reading that whole essay was an experience to say the least
@Lostmymind1
@Lostmymind1 Жыл бұрын
@@izanneto Nope. I just over-analyze every little thing. My teachers thought I had A.D.D which would later be reclassified as A.D.H.D, but that's not what it is. With A.D.H.D you have 15 different thought processes all distracting you and all equally pulling you into different thoughts so that you never finish a thought process. I'm the opposite. I don't lose my attention. I go into detail so deep that even the crew from NCIS stopped telling them to "ENHANCE!!!". Then you just follow the hypothetical situations to their natural conclusion, which baffles everybody else because nobody thinks the logistics through of anything anymore. So somehow I get called rainman, which doesn't even make sense. Rainman had an eidetic memory, and would recall details about situations that nobody else could. I'm not recalling, I'm going into hypotheticals, and exploring the groundwork for which fictional events are laid. Often times coming to conclusions that nobody else would have reached. But, I do thank you for at least taking the time to complete the journey with me. I often times get reacted to in a way that the other person wasn't even going to read the message. It always reminds me of a Bo Burnham lyric. "It's youtube, it's what this country has been needing, an entire generation of kids who don't waste their time reading!"

Actually, as an ADHDer, I'm trying to allow myself to do more "productive procrastination". And I don't think you should feel guilty about that. Forcing myself to do a specific task often leads to doing nothing, so instead I allow myself to do stuff that I feel like doing right now, with a tasks list I check in whatever order. Eventually the more boring tasks will need actual deadlines (and some stress) to be done, but overall I'm more productive and less depressed this way!

One time in college junior year I barely got a SIX PAGE ESSAY for my history class done by the deadline. The deadline was 11:59pm had to submit it by then and it was worth a QUARTER OF MY GRADE. I spent a total of 6 hours on it (so two pages per hour cause I SPENT an hour just STARING at the screen figuring out how to start it) and somehow not only passed the plagiarism test but got a B on it. That is the dumbest biggest achievement I've ever had in my life. Because trying to finish college while depressed out of your mind TRYING to fight the urge to unsubscribe from life is just the worst kind of thing to put yourself through. I don't know what it is about high pressure situations that brings out the best in me but I'd love to be able to avoid that cause the aftermath SUCKS.

Thats awesome! College really does suck though, most jobs are, you show up, and go home. College does little to really prepare you for a work life, aside from something like law school, or med school. But for some reason you cant jump straight into med school/Law school. A lot of jobs dont even need a college degree.
@TheRibottoStudios
@TheRibottoStudios Жыл бұрын
@@XFizzlepop-Berrytwist college at least puts you into different social standards than your home might or your high school. So I'll give it that. And I was able to get a part time job as well, save up some cash (that was a bad idea in hindsight cause it was just MORE stress on TOP of my stress) and then because of my depression that at the time I didn't even KNOW was depression, I became THAT person in group projects. You know, the one that doesn't do that work but passes. I felt bad, but couldn't bring myself to care at the time. College was not an overall good time for me, if I could do it again, there's a lot I'd change. Mostly, getting help for myself mentally. I did make a lot of new friends via pokemon though and that I wouldn't change at all.

Pffft, that's nothing I once wrote a 5 page college essay about the parallels between Chinese and Korean martial arts archetypes without doing more than 20 minutes of research and maybe an hour of actual writing and I wasn't even in the class, dude promised me $80 if I could land a C or better. Secured a B-, homeboy passed his Korean Cinema class, and I paid my rent on time. Then I did a back flip and snapped the bad guys neck. The last part isn't true but the rest is.
