A defense of the "why are you still recording when your life is in danger" question- I recently watched a film called The Bridge about suicides on the Golden Gate Bridge. Warning- it's an incredibly painful film, and has video of actual suicides. There's an interview with a photographer who tells a story where he is taking pictures and photographs a woman climbing over the railing. He then continues to photograph her as she prepares to jump just feet from him. He says that looking through the camera had a way of removing him from the moment, making it seem unreal. He actually had to pull his mind back into reality, and he manages to grab the woman and bring her back over the rail. I'm sure for a lot of people, sometimes the camera lens becomes a type of barrier between them and what's happening right in front of them.
@ManubibiWalsh4 жыл бұрын
That’s exactly what is mentioned in Blair Witch Project - at some point Josh asks Heather why she’s so obsessed with recording everything and then he goes “I get it now, if you look at it through a lens it seems less real”. I also experience the disconnect between realty and recording a lot whenever I take pictures or take a video. It could be a really brilliant concept to eviscerate in a found footage horror.
@creed87124 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard this idea carried in a number of mediums. Dceased for example has Jimmy Olsen echo this as does a zombie movie I can’t recall the name of that’s taken through photographs of the event and a similar sense of the photographers being not part of what’s going on is stated
@mattgilbert73474 жыл бұрын
I love the way Lynch subverted that in Lost Highway. Fred likes to "remember things my own way...not necessarily how they actually happened". The VHS camera footage intrudes like an emissary of cold, hard, terrible truths.
@edboy54184 жыл бұрын
That seems like a defense mechanism that the brain does to help cope with when something unimaginable is infront of the person holding the camera. It helps in tricking their mind disconnect from an awful event occurring to them making them feel like a viewer in a horror film when in reality they're the victim of the monster.
@insomniacspillowfortarmy57764 жыл бұрын
Yeah and now so many people will witness something bad happen in public with others around. Say someone getting beaten where one is clearly innocent and people now just start recording rather then helping or getting help. Like they're some cut throat journalist or something. Technology has effected us in so many ways like how we behave in a way that it's changed us and how we react. And technology like today isn't a old thing so we'll see how it's changing us as people and a society years on compared to how people were like 30 years before I also saw that film because my mom saw San Francisco where she's from and that it was real but we found out in the beginning after whatever minutes it's a very uh unique concept and film. Watched the whole thing. It gave me a really odd and creepy feeling. I heard the guy got in some sort of legal issues with the fact he put the cameras in such locations to film it all and think for a year? Idk if he got in trouble or fines, Im guessing the city officials didn't want like such type of bad and sad press and so tried getting it to not be released.

Lets not forget that [REC] does what very few horror films have been able to do: the final sequence is the scariest part of the movie. A lot of horror films excel in build up and tension building but in the finale they turn more into a action/thriller direction, for example a long chase scene or an exorcism with objects flying around. its tense but not SCARY. [REC] is the gold standard on how to do a finale in a horror film.

i love how the one part of the movie where they COULD have fucked up was showing the monster. whether they show it too much or in broad daylight in he open, but its obscured in darkness and the fuzzy night vision and all other junk. also, that fact that its NOT a stupid CGI creature, but rather a real tangible effect with that creepy ass makeup applied to Javier Botet López, who was born with a tall slender, lanky and disproportionate body. it only adds to the terror and tension rather than taking away by being too distracting or fake.

I feel rec handles the "why are they still filming" question in a few different ways throughout, all of which, to me, feel extremely natural. The initial presence of the camera is baked into the premise, then as events start to escalate it's actually put aside a few times, before returning in order to document the "big story" that's emerging. As things progress and get more dire, it shifts again to being a necessary tool to document the mistreatment and abandonment of the building's inhabitants by the authorities. As things get steadily worse and the likelihood of escaping alive dwindles, it becomes a makeshift weapon, and finally, the only readily available source of light/vision in the complete darkness of the attic.

This and Train To Busan are two of my favourite demonic/virus/zombie movies, I agree with Ryan the sequels do seem to take away some of the mystery of this first story. I love films with a claustrophobic atmosphere, and Rec has that all through the short runtime. An English language movie based on this called Quarantine was made a year later, but this original film is the best.

As someone who knows nearly nothing about the film-making process and what a cameraperson is or isn't supposed to do, it's really interesting seeing an analysis like this and finally understanding why I enjoyed a particular movie so much, or didn't, when on the surface, it seems like so many other similar movies. It's weird to think of it as needing to be told why I liked or disliked something, but it reminds me of when I was learning to draw. I had such a hard time at first trying to make what I was drawing look anything like what I was seeing until I finally learned how to fully interpret what I was seeing in a way that translated on to a 2D surface. It's similarly hard to verbalize what makes a movie you're watching seem "real," it's just something you feel in your gut. But learning to recognize these things, I think, allows for a much deeper appreciation when someone does get it right. Thanks for getting my brain working today!

Amazing to see actually good films get made in this genre. I've always appreciated shorter run times that do everything they need to rather than dragging on for too long.

I love when horror films can make me feel like I'm there. The claustrophobic and trapped feeling I get when watching this film even in a edited down form scares me still. As above So below gives me the same feeling.

Ryan you are knocking it out of the park with these movie picks! This is a film near and dear to my heart (I even made a trip to Barcelona to see the apartment building it was filmed in!) and it spawned an inside joke between me and my boyfriend with César's famous last words ("en su casa coño!"). Excelent analysis as always! In the future I'd love to see you cover the Soska Sisters "American Mary". Enjoy your much deserved break.

This is the story of how [REC] became the scariest horror movie I've ever seen. My dad and I used to download movies that never got here in Brazil to watch at home. Pirate discussion aside, we have a videostore but these kinds of movies were hard to find and even harder to rent unless they had dubbing, so we just got it to watch for ourselves. Anyway, the day we watched this movie, I had literally never heard of it before. No known actors, from unkown directors, I had not even seen a trailer or clip at all. My dad just said it looked like a found footage thriller, so I was like "Eh, sure, why not." At first it seemed pretty chill, I had no idea what the plot was so I was invested right away to figure out where it was going. And then they reach the apartment. And then they enter that room with the old lady. And then shit goes down. And I had never been so nervous, terrified and jumpy in my entire life. The last few minutes of this movie were some of the most anxiety inducing shit I've ever experienced. Basically, if you now know what [REC] is, at least you're somewhat prepared for what's to come. I wasn't.

I remember renting this film several times when I was younger because it stuck with me so much. When me and my friends watched it the first time we were all rooting for Manu to live bc he wasn't a typical dumb horror film character but a good leader who deserved to survive, so when he died it hit even harder and it just showed literally nobody was safe. I watched it recently and it still holds up super well, hard to believe how old it is now!

I always loved how Chronicle overcame the found footage camera angle aspect without just forgetting about it. Quick summary, Chronicle is a found footage film about 3 teenagers who gain telekinetic super powers and one of them was always filming. Throughout the film he continues to film but gradually learns to control the camera with his abilities and this is mentioned in film during a scene where two are sat on a roof and the camera is orbiting them. One of them asks about it and the "camera guy" says he is so used to doing it by now that he barely has to concentrate on it being there. I thought it was a cool way for cinematic angles with a logical explanation. There's only ever one camera angle, but it can move because he moves it and it becomes steady and makes for good footage. obviously its not a horror more of a documentary but a better way to do it. And it does get put down etc from time to time and has jarring cuts to push home the found footage feel.

Hell yeah, you're finally covering one of my favorite found footage movies ever. As much as I liked REC 2 I kinda felt it took a bit away from the rather ambiguous ending of the first one, where you weren't quite sure if SPOILERS: It was actually demons this whole time or it was just what the missing priest interpreted the whole incident as but you had just enough evidence to support both theories. At least that's how I always thought about the ending. Edit: Well shit, it seems we agree on that exact point to some extent, lol

Wow. I remember seeing this on release. Epic film. What always struck me was that part of the genius of it was that the monster is so uncanny looking that you can't comprehend what you're seeing. In part because the set is quite oddly spaced and laid out, but also because you don't initially realise that she is being played by a 7 foot tall actor, and thus the proportions just look impossible and terrifying.
