If I remember correctly, granted I haven't seen the movie since it was in theaters and I was like 11-12 at the time, the friend of Bug had an obsession with horror movies and after revealing himself to be the killer, told Bug that the killer was always someone you least expect. I mean good on him for not counting out the one person with a disability, but come on dude, someone was bound to question how the one person who couldn't see and needed a cane to be able to not walk into walls and doors was able to chase and find not just anyone through the woods, but specific people.

@oskar_oskarewicz5 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed, a very messy, but still a decent film by Craven. I liked the idea of blending 80s Freddylike paranormal slasher, with 90s Scream/Mean Girls vibes set in late 2000s. However it felt like Wes got lost in it, and didn't quite know on what he should focus. Also the timing was bad for such movie I guess. Not 80s enought to take part in 80s nostalgia, and too 90s for that time. Sooner or later, 90s will be a next big thing, he was too early with that ;) Also it lacked the charismatic killer. Anyway I enjoyed it after second viewing, even it's pretty flawed. And yes, I woul like to see the original version of Deadly Friend too :)

When Ryan brought up Wes Craven’s disconnect between him and the generation he was writing for, I imagined Craven doing Steve Buscemi’s “How do you do, fellow kids?” bit from 30 Rock. And you’re right that the teen parts of the movie are incredibly early 2010s Emo. A My Chemical Romance soundtrack wouldn’t sound out of place with those scenes. I’ll probably skip this and stick with other lesser known Craven movies like The People Under The Stairs. It’s good campy fun (would love to see your thoughts on it. And I wait the day until you finally talk about Identity.

I always assumed the personalities the father had was those of his victims. Didn't even think of them as souls.
@somewhatdweeb51945 жыл бұрын
Lauren-Eva M I think there was some parallel in the movie between condors and the killer(s); a plot line that either got abandoned or was cut out of the movie. Condors consume its prey and takes its soul. At least, that’s what I remember the movie saying that. The father is a condor because he collects the souls of those he killed, and they become personalities of him. The one personality he had in the beginning had the same name as one of the victims shown on the news footage in the beginning. I believe it was Penny. I think the same was supposed to happen with Adam, because he began acting like Jay who could build things on the spot out of almost nothing. Adam constantly said “they’re all inside of me now, the Riverton Seven, and they talk to me.” But from what I remember, the last act got rewritten and reshot by the studio’s demand or some extent to that, and that’s why Alex became the killer in the end I think.

I actually love the teen drama in this movie, particularly the absurd high school hierarchy that Craven created where everyone does what Fang wants. It was so weird and out-of-touch. Otherwise, I thought the movie set up some interesting ideas, but doesn't quite follow through in the end. Alex being possessed didn't really work for me; they seemed to be setting up that each kid was a reincarnation of one of the Ripper's identities, so Alex should have just been the Ripper, and fully aware of his actions.

I recently rewatched this movie after seeing it once when it came out, and it was just as bad as I remember. I couldn't get a feel for the characters, the story was interesting but uninspired, the twist was horrible, and the main character was just...no.

I’m picking up a lot of what your putting down. But also genuinely enjoyed watching it for the first time. It’s a pretty cool concept. A very Wes Craven concept.

I know you suggested briefly that the studio screwed with Wes's vision. You may be onto something, as Wes Craven mentioned on the commentary for the DVD that the script was being rewritten during filming. That alone should be telling. However, reshoots definitely created some problems too. For example there was an interaction between Bug and Fang during the third act that clarified Fang's earlier statements about Bug having killed people. It essentially came down to Bug's existence being a painful reminder of the Ripper's massacre and leaving everyone who was involved feeling dead on the inside because they have to look back on that day everytime they see him. It's sort of there in the final film, but barely. Then there's the fact that multiple endings were shot. All of this can be scene on the dvd. Then there's stuff that was in the trailer, but hasn't released including Danai Gurira's character firing off a gun. It's telling how much of the film changed throughout production. However, I think where the biggest issue is certain decisions that were made once you get past Jay's death. The Riverton 7 are killed off one by one and it isn't until only 3 of them are left that anyone actually realizes that there's any danger. So in other words, the characters are left unaware of any danger until the last 30 minutes of the movie. It really prevented people from being able to actually respond to the situation. Ideally, I would have had Jay's death be announced shortly after the teenagers went the school not long after his death. It would have given the film a more clear focus instead of relying on teen drama. It also would've made more of Penelope's warnings and concerns about the Riverton Ripper. In fact, she seems to be the only who takes the issue seriously and then she's unceremoniously killed off, leaving us with characters who don't seem to care at all about any risks.

Remember it? I still have it on bluray. Picked it up from the local Blockbuster when it was liquidating it's stock for next to nothing. It wasn't even on my radar when it released and I picked it up dirt cheep just for something to watch.

I thought I remembered this movie, but your review showed a LOT I just didn't remember. I might have to dig it out and give it a Halloween re-watch.

Literally the only reason i even vaguely remember this movie is because of that singing trailer thing Tobuscus used to do.

I've only watched a handful of Ryan's videos so I don't know him well enough to be certain, but in this one he seemed a bit more emotionally charged than in previous entries. I got so used to him dispassionately but critically examining movies that it's weird to hear. Has anyone else noticed this, or am I just imagining things?

I saw this movie once in a bus ride. I was probably 10 or eleven at the time and I think it was the first horror movie that I saw. Everytime I see anything horror I always think of the scene in 1:30
