Its been at least 10 years since I'd cast one. I remembered the arm motion but had forgotten the net gathering. Everyone I know puts it in their teeth. I've had dentures for many years and was certain my teeth would end up in the water. Plus putting lead in my mouth isn't appealing to me anyway. I have enough problems without pickling my gourd with lead.

Great video. I have now got it opening into a nice circle consistently. Thank you! I'm hoping to master being able to throw it from my kayak. Prefer to do it in sitting but if that doesn't work I will attempt in standing. It's a bit shaky just standing in the yak without casting but I have trained the cast without moving my feet out on the grass. Do you think this cast would work with less net hanging (instead of 1m more like 40-50cm)?
@RyanMoodyFishing8 жыл бұрын
The best bet is just to try it and see Tim. I agree balancing on a yak would make it a bit tricky!

@RikkiTikkiTavi2909 жыл бұрын
One of the problems I see with this method is if the bait are not showing for a long period of time or it takes many throws to get them the arms tend to get very tired making it harder to throw the net properly and hurting your fingers. This is especially true with larger nets. I prefer to drape a third on my shoulder to reduce weight on my arms. No real timing of letting go of anything with teeth or the second hand, the proper friction to open the net perfectly every time comes from the shoulder, only difficulty is gauging how hard to throw the net.
@RyanMoodyFishing9 жыл бұрын
+RikkiTikkiTavi Hi Ricki, Ryan uses a good pair of polaroid sunnies and pretty much only throws when he sees the bait. For bait like herring in deeper water Ryan waits until they pop on the surface making them easy to catch. Perhaps refining your bait hunting will alleviate this issue for you. Ryan generally catches all the bait he needs for a full day charter in about 15 minutes. But each to their own and if that method works for you, for sure keep using it. It's all about what works for you. Cheers Team Moody
@RikkiTikkiTavi2909 жыл бұрын
+Ryan Moody Fishing I wish it was always so easy for me. Alot of times in my area we end up looking for bait to show on the surface in deeper water. means alot of standing around with the net ready to throw. This technique certainly works, but for the bait where I live you would end up getting tired.
@FISHGOLF10010 жыл бұрын

Don't recognize the net. Appears to have no horne, nor brail lines for the horne to follow to the lead line to form a basket. So it appears the net it is only applicable from the shore where you can slide it "slowly" up onto the sand, as it appears that once the lead line loses contact with the sand, the bait is free to swim out. I don't see how you can lift it up to the bow of a boat or onto a dock since there are no brail lines to pull the lead line together to form a "trap". Wondering if the technique will work equally well however with a brailed/horned net.
@RyanMoodyFishing6 жыл бұрын
partner348 works perfectly well off a boat mate. There are pockets in the net that catch the bait. In deeper water I use a drawstring castnet. And for prawns I use a different one again. The different types are spelled out here: www.ryanmoodyfishing.com/cast-nets-for-catching-bait/
