Kmart and Coles in Australia are owned by the same company (Wesfarmers). Coles is the supermarket chain; Kmart is the discount variety store (clothing, toys, homewares, etc.). Woolworths also has a discount variety store chain, called Big W. And there is also Target, in Australia, which is their main competition. (In the USA, Target sells a much greater variety of goods than in Australia.) If you want to shop a little more ‘up market’ in Australia, the two major department store chains are Myer and David Jones (although there are others like Harvey Norman, Domayne, etc.).

@@theearthbutterfly Thanks for that. I thought Wesfarmers might have bought up Target, but didn’t know Coles had become its own public company again. Gambling IS indeed prevalent in Australia. Most/all capital cities have at least one casino, there’s also a few regional cities with a casino and there are poker machines (slot machines) in pretty much every pub. And you can’t watch a sports match on tv without being constantly encouraged to bet on the outcome

The disgraceful thing in the US though is that the Govt tax any winnings over $1200USD. It is out and out robbery and typical of their money grabbing tax system. I don't see them giving a tax break to anybody losing $1200 though. Nothing more than thieves, oh and they are happy for you to get lung cancer whilst you gamble too as you can smoke in nearly every casino. Now you know why there is no public health system there. Too many rich people make too much money off the sick and dying.

Gambling is bad here to the point of criminal, hmm there are certain casino chains being investigated for possible international money laundering operations, or so I saw on the news. Our poker machine businesses should be illegal for the harm the pokies do to people, their families, other businesses in the locality, etc, in my and many others' opinion. Except all states get many $$$$ in taxes from them and the gambling business lobby is heaps powerful, more than any political party. We have a national gambling problem. Aussies have always laid bets, on racehorses, greyhound racing etc. But electronic gaming machines and online gambling, including in-play sports betting, is very harmful to our country and culture. I have no idea who is going to deal with it, it will be up to the next generation of politicians. Maybe they will have the spine to heave the worst of the crap out if the stables.

Aussie “coins” have a portrait of the King (previously the Queen) on one side of all coins - this side is commonly known as “heads” but is officially called the Obverse, while on the other side “tails” or Reverse, have different animals or images to celebrate special occasions. 5c = Echidna, 10c = Lyrebird, 20c = Platypus, 50c = Aust Coat of Arms, $1 = Kangaroos & $2 = An Aboriginal Elder & Southern Cross Stars. The $1 & $2 coins look gold, but are made of 92% copper, 6% Aluminium & 2% Nickel. Decimal currency coins commenced in 1966 and replaced the old Imperial currency. Australia introduced its own currency in 1910 (9 years after Federation) and moved to decimal currency 1 years before New Zealand & 5 years before Britain.our new currency was introduced 1 year after the (then new) Australian Mint was opened by Prince Philip (the Queens’s husband). 1c & 2c coins went out of circulation in 1992.

The Australia Day controversy is that the day is one of mourning for Indigenous people, marking the day they "officially" lost their land and most of their human rights for a long time. Many Indigenous people call it "survival day", celebrating the fact that they and their ancestors survived the attempted genocide of Indigenous people, and many have used the day to protest European occupation of the country and the oppressive restrictions that used to be placed on Indigenous people's rights to live and work. Not to mention the calendar day that was chosen, January 26th, is the anniversary of a massacre in which 40 to 50 Indigenous men were killed by mounted police in retaliation for the murders of 5 European men killed in separate incidents. I mean, it's hard to find a calendar date that isn't the anniversary of a massacre of Australian Indigenous people, but that date in particular is especially infamous.

A great pub meal is a chicken schnitzel top with Napolitano sauce and cheese over a slice of ham, along with a good serving of chips(fries to you) with chicken salt and a nice garden salad; should cost about $12 to $15.

That 905 k straight stretch of highway across Australia is highway 1 and along parts of that section the Royal Flying Doctors Service use that road to land on when sick or injured people from the outback have to get to a Hospital quickly, and by law if a plane is coming in to land on that road ALL drivers have to get off the road or you will be fined for not doing so. There’s even painted planes on the road to warn drivers.

Try to find out how long the highway on the nullbor plain is, from Adelaide to western australia. P-plater, provisional plate license, not fully licenced. Be careful when you see the red p-plate. A schnitty in a chicken schnitzel, bash the chicken flat, made in many aussie pubs with bacon inside? Crumbed and deep fried, topped with a fresh tomato sauce and grated parmesan, served with salad or hot chips or both. Many varieties exist, many chefs, many pubs.

Probably meant P-Plater. Someone who has had their licence for less than 2 years has to display a P plate, (provisional licence), on the front and back of the vehicle in most states and territories. In Queensland its red for the first 12 months and green for the second, (last I looked anyway). And in NSW for the first 12 months they are limited to max 90km/h, (56mp/h), and 100km/h for the second year, (62mp/h)

The "dash cam" or gopro of the motorcyclist is him lane filtering, legally moving up through traffic at slow speeds, the Truck is a "truck and dog", so one with a trailer, being nice by keeping a path open for the motorcycle. Ryan, red arrows at certain intersections operate as turning right is not always safe at certain times of the day and it will reduce collisions. They can be frustrating those as they operate whether there is traffic coming or not. It means some of us get stuck at traffic lights for ages if you nobody sets the sensor off to activate a green arrow. One of the things we have to deal with here in Oz. If technology were better, they would switch these arrows off at certain times of the day where they are not required. Oh and a "Snitty' or Chicken Parma is a chicken snitzel topped with napoli sauce, sometimes ham and always lots of grilled cheese, Can't say I could many the US but, damn how your people haven't caught onto that is downright bewildering. Closest I came was at Mendocino Farms who have a chicken parma dip which is so delicious.

The traffic lights weren't the subject of the video, it was the courtesy of the truck driver. With regards to the traffic lights, the red arrow indicates right turn traffic to stop; as there is dual flow traffic through the intersection, the right turn traffic must wait for a green arrow (which means the oncoming traffic has stopped).

"Australia Day" on the 26th of January is the sort-of anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney to establish the penal colony of New South Wales. It has been celebrated in Sydney since 1808, annually since 1818, but it was called "Foundation Day" or "Anniversary Day" until 1935. Officialdom has been pushing it as a national holiday since 1994, kind of like as if Reagan had moved Independence Day to May 4th (anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, Virginia). Most Aboriginal people refuse to recognise it as the anniversary of the country that they are citizens of, and I don't blame them. 1 January (Federation Day), 3 March (Independence Day), or 17 September (Constitution Day) would be a better anniversary of Australia as a whole (rather than New South Wales).

Australia Day, Foundation Day or Settlement Day is what it is...those who don't want to celebrate it can just not celebrate it...don't expect averyone else to conform just because some don't like or celebrate it. No matter what happens that date is when the First Fleet proclaimed the colony of New South Wales, which included New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, the major half of South Australia, Tasmania a third of the Northern Territory and future Australian Capital Territory. So yes, this date will always be the beginning of Australia that exists today...every country in the entire world has been fought over, taken over, people displaced and or wiped out or assimilated at some point and multiple points in their history even today it is happening in Ukraine and Gaza. But you don't silence history just to not hurt someone's feelings. If that happens then there will be no celebrations at all for anything but boring things...Christmas, Easter are also at risk because a small amount of people that follow non Christian religions are offended (even though they live in a country that was founded by, and the majority of people are Christian (practising or not)) by it. It's starting to be taboo to wish anyone a Merry Christmas these days...making people say happy holidays instead.

The USA has two national holidays: Thanksgiving (European colonisation) and Independence Day (nation’s foundation). Similarly, Australia also has two national holidays: Australia Day (26 Jan - European colonisation) and Commonwealth Day (1 Jan). But since 1 January is already a public holiday (New Year’s Day), Aussies are usually too hungover to break out more fireworks to celebrate the day we became a federation (1 Jan 1901). Most Australians wouldn’t even know that New Years Day is also called Commonwealth Day and that it is the true equivalent of our ‘Independence Day’. The controversy over ‘Australia Day’ on 26 January is similar to controversy over how Americans (choose to) commemorate Thanksgiving. Both days symbolise the establishment of European civilisation at the expense of indigenous cultures and lives.

Commonwealth Day is in March. Not a public holiday or really observed here. While the 1st of Jan is indeed the anniversary of when Australia as an official country came into being, there has never been any sort of commemoration of this date - even back in the 1900s-1910s
@noelleggett5368
@noelleggett5368 Жыл бұрын
@@theearthbutterfly That’s a different ‘Commonwealth Day’. The second Monday in March celebrates the (British) Commonwealth of Nations, forged out of the defunct British Empire. It was established in 1977 and is not a public holiday in Australia. (Most Australians wouldn’t even know it exists.) January 1 celebrates the establishment of the federation known officially as the Commonwealth of Australia, and the term ‘Commonwealth Day’ for 1 January (for the Commonwealth of Australia) has been in use since 1901, and has been a national public holiday - because it is New Years Day - not simply because it is the date of the establishment of the Commonwealth of Australia. Most Australians don’t even know that NewYears Day is also called ‘Commonwealth Day’. Thank you for proving my point.

Searching Commonwealth Day Australia/Jan 1st etc brings up information about the celebrations that occurred in 1901 when we were first federated, but nothing about any celebration or commemoration on that date thereafter. Also not sure why, if we did have anything on that date, it would be called commonwealth day when it's only about one country? Many pubs in Australia have licences to have slot machines. Actual casinos are rare. Solo is a lemon flavoured softdrink (soda), and the cans look like this. They say thirst crusher on them, but the sweat crusher thing was added for the deodorant as a joke. Though why anyone would want to smell of lemon is beyond me. The Australia Day thing is because the day we celebrate our country is the same day that the UK 'settled' Australia. Many indigenous people call it Invasion Day, and say that it's insensitive to celebrate on that particular day. The issue has been sensationalised by the media in recent years, and people are getting quite divisive over it.

Australia Day January 26th, when fiirst fleet arrived on Australia's shore of Botany bay
@DeepThought9999
@DeepThought9999 Жыл бұрын
Close but not quite correct. Jan 26 was the date of the establishment by Arthur Phillip, commander of the First Fleet, of the settlement in what came to be known as Sydney Cove (part of Port Jackson, which is more commonly known these days as Sydney Harbour). The arrival of the First Fleet in Botany Bay (which is just a few kilometres south of Port Jackson) was a few days earlier. So Australia Day is intended to commemorate the first European settlement in Australia. Ryan, when (not if) you arrive in Australia you will most likely have your aircraft land at Sydney (Kingsford Smith) Airport on the shores of Botany Bay. Botany Bay has been surrounded by Sydney suburbs for about 100 years. If the wind is calm or from the south, your plane will fly in over the Parramatta River, the main tributary leading to Port Jackson, affording you good views of either (from the starboard side) the Parramatta River and Sydney’s Western Suburbs to Paramatta and beyond, all the way to the Blue Mountains, or giving you even better views out the port side of the plane (to the east, down the Parramatta River to Sydney Harbour with good views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Central Business District and Sydney Harbour with the east coast of Australia visible). So sit on the left of the plane.

NO SIX MATES IN THE BACK! In Australia, travelling in any place in a vehicle without SEATBELTS is highly ILLEGAL. Will getva severe fine, both driver and insecured passenger. The driver gains demerit points for EACH such passenger, and on having enough points, will lose their license. Sux such probably means instant loss of license for 12 months plus impounding of the vehicle for 30 or more days. Multiple repeats of such offences possibly crushing of the vehicle, as is applied in cases of multiple "hoon" driving offences. Here failurevof wearing seatbeltsvis a serious road/driving offence, NOT OPTIONAL. Therecare newly introduced cameras specifically targetting catching failure or incorrect wearing of seatbelts and also use of mobile phone by drivers, either talking or texting using a phone. Do not even get caught with your phone in the hands while driving even if only holding not using it. No taking photos or filming while driving hand holding phone. Those cameras apparently can act over significant distance too, several hundred meters/ yards away from camera. 😡😡😭😭

Including packing 8 into a tiny Suzuki 4WD, a two seat only with tiny rear compartment to squeeze 6 in there , plus driver and seated passenger up front, to assist a group of girls, getting 4 km up a snow covered road to the ski village not walking, after being being left behind by their boys. Dad had an old G60 Nissan Patrol with bench seats in the back for upto 6 passengers, no seat belts, legal in its day, in fact legally did NOT require seat belts in front either, but we had them fitted. If available had to be worn. Also distributed Christmas presents from flat bed of a truck, and also collected bottles and cans from back of a truck and other utility. Also hooked around in a "Paddock wreck" sitting on the roof or standing on the back bumper. Do NOT make the mistake getting caught 'Off Road' having such fun in the back. Road laws apply on all gazetted tracks and if observed by police patrol, either 4WD or Trail bike patrol, YOU WILL BE BUSTED with tidy fine and demerit points, in fact the illegal riding persons may have a LONG walk home. Only within private property can thevpolice not act. But driver liability becomes extreme IF ANYTHING happens to any occupant not restrained by seatbelts. Manslaughter charges quite possible, if not at least culpable driving. I know it was fun, and laws do spoil lots we enjoy. I have never even come close to falling off a moving vehicle, and always enjoyed many variants of open driving fun.

- Ute {Pron. 'Yute'} - Think we call Mr Charles 'King' now. Something to do with a Coronation... But, he's pretty Chill. Probably wouldn't care either way. 😆 - Poor Skippy on the roof! How the F DID he get up there? Hope he didn't break a leg getting down. - Pressie {Present/ Gift Voucher} I don't know what 'Preezzie' is either. [ KMART doesn't sell Groceries Still have to go to the big 2: Coles or Woollies for food. ] - 'Schnittie' { Schnitzel } Either Veal or Chicken. Either way; usually dry bits of rubber covered in melted cheese. {* Sometimes... you can get lucky and find a pub where the Chef knows how to cook Schnitties } - Solo { Lemon Drink } Deodorant? WTF! - AUSTRALIA DAY... You're right, It's SUPPOSED to be about Unity. Most Aussies want to Celebrate a 'Founding Day' for our Nation. The debate is about which day. It's hard for our First People's to 'Celebrate' the date that Cpt Cook landed and the Genocide commenced. Most reasonable Aussies recognise that to continue with this date is profoundly disrespecful. We want to have everyone able to celebrate our nations achievements together. Hence the 'Change The Date' Campaign. Many suggested the date that our Constitution came into effect, but as this turned out to be: Jan 1st 1901, everyone stood up and shouted "Oh F No! That's ALREADY a Public Holiday! Sh--t! What do we do now...!?!?" (No Australian will EVER agree to losing a Public Holiday. Especially New Years Day! We are 'super-glued' to them. 😆) THEN... there are those who argue that changing the date won't achieve social justice for Indigenous people - and that the 'Change the Date' campaign only perpetuates further Australian nationalism, merely moving "the celebration of colonisation" to another date. While yet more argue that it's not about 'celebrating colonialism' at all! So, there the debate has flopped around, with no broad consensus on any rationale - nor alternative date proposed yet, but the 'Change The Date' movement continues to grow. Hence a real decline in sales of Australia Day Merch - which prompted 'The Big Two' {Yes > Coles & Woolies} to announce they would no longer be stocking this stuff. THEN the Opposition Leader; {known locally as; Voldemort or Mr Potato Head - I can never decide which - probably a rather scary combo of the two !} got in on the act and attacked the Big Two as being 'un-Australian'! The truth is our Politicians have spectacularly Failed to take a Leadership Role on this one and clarify all of the above - which feeds community misinformation and division. Generally the population in total is split almost 50/50 on the issue, but there are large generational differences, with the under 24's now at around 67% to Change The Date.
