Let us not forget that the very first attempt to rehabilitate Pierre Abelard was none other than that of Bernard of Clairvaux. As a result of a deathbed reconciliation, Bernard himself went to Rome to plead Abelard's case to overturn Abelard's Excommunication.

I don't know if the "Ransom Argument" makes God a deceiver... another possibility is that Satan refuses to see how the death of Jesus could break the bonds of sin's slavery- a sort of hubris on his part. It would not be the first time that Satan's hubris led to his downfall!
