The most encouraging way to look at it is to think of the "savings" on fees as another dividend source. Money not being spent that can be reinvesting and snowballing. (small as it may be)

There aren't any annual expenses for buying individual stocks - just with most ETFs - if you look at the Stats in the Robinhood app it shows you the Expense Ratio there for ETFs

Your best bet is to dollar cost average versus lump sum investing, and you'll also want to consider diversifying into bonds as you get closer to retirement age - but yes that is very possible!
