Dave Grohl says just go out and play. Screw social media. Screw recording. Just gig. Shoot for 300 shows in your first year. Stay with 100 miles of your location during that first year. Encourage your fans to record and bootleg your gigs! Word of mouth is still the best form of advertising. If you love playing live, then play out live... a LOT. Good things will happen.

SO glad that you talked about the recording quality for local bands. Sometimes I'll see a local band live and say, "wow, I need to get their demo". And then I go to listen and it sounds like it was recorded with a potato. You could do the other 2 tips perfectly, and if you skip that recording tip, it all comes crashing down. Great video broseph!!!

These are all great and legit points. We shelled out the money, put out some decent recordings, webpage and social media. We play rockabilly and some DJs from overseas that are affiliated with the rockabilly scene want to add us to their playlists. We are essentially a start up but putting these things in place helped a lot to get us going.

Immediately clicked this once I saw the title. I had that poorly worded question about starting a band on the last Q & A. I didn't mean serious intentions like "big band make music for the people sell out" bs I really meant just like not half assing it and making sure things are done correctly. This video really covered that. Super helpful man.

Content is awesome man! Little recommendation would be to cut out the spaces in between topics. Editing out those couple seconds of blank space would be good! Also maybe throw a track in the background quietly. Other than that the content is to the point and really helpful! Thank you Ryan!

Help! I’m 14 and I’m a girl, i bought a drum set, and I also have a guitar but I don’t know which one should I pick to play in my future band or should I learn both and see which one I like the most?
@ryankirbz6 жыл бұрын
Learning both would be awesome! Then you could write full songs eventually. If you HAD to choose one, guitar is great, since you can write on your computer and program drums. But you're so young, i would do my best to learn both.
@thatweird_gorla79136 жыл бұрын
Ryan Kirby Thank You!!
@psteeg35516 жыл бұрын
try both guitar and drums, perhaps even more instruments (bass, keyboard). Try to determine which instruments you would like to be able to play well. Most instruments feel awkward in the beginning so don't focus too much on the first impression of the feel ;) any instrument becomes comfortable when you start practicing a lot. Also think about the music you like to listen to and the music (songs) you would like to play: what instruments are in the music, and which one of those instruments do I want to play? First choose the instrument you want to learn, and then focus on becoming better at it. There's enough guitarists and drummers out there, so don't worry

In the past before tv and even radio were widespread people used to bring there instruments over to play after dinner to entertain one another. If you were good enough you could move the stage into the barn where there was enough space for people to dance. Now it's all about who can out pose the other and groups of kids "liking" a band because they heard them first. Thank god Napster killed the record label.
