Luckily the camp spot has a few people driving thru. You should get a towing winch installed on your van so if there is a tree or a giant boulder nearby, you can winch yourself out.

My only advice about driving in the north western snow is definitely get snow tire shoes/ chains if needed. If not it's all about driving slow. Also pack up on windshield wiper fuild because salt and mud mix makes it hard to see when it builds up on your windshield. But at the end of all of this just take your time.

A lot of the highways here in British Columbia require snow tires, or at least M+S with good tread in the winter. If the police pull you over (they have random stops all over the place checking for proper tires) and you don't have good tires at best you'll get a ticket, at worst they'll tow your vehicle for not being suitable for the conditions.

One thing that I wish I would have done when I was in my 20s living in crap apartments was vanlife type setups. Rent, plus utilities was rough, didn't leave much for fun. Saving money, having an interesting setup would have been fun. Of Course 20 years ago there was no cellphone wifi to run a computer. Had a palm treo back then that was pretty cool,. but certainly nothing to write home about. Maybe I could have read a lot. As for getting stuck on the backroads, can't recommend a winch setup on your front bumper more, get one with a longer cable and have two straps and a pulley on hand. Anytime you get stuck all you have to find is an anchor point (tree, rock, etc..) and you can pull yourself out.

The roads to Alaska and northern Canada are the ONLY roads so you will see EVERYBODY that passes that way if you get in trouble. Just have to be careful when you drive off the main road. The northern roads have plenty of roadside camping along the way and roadhouses are frequent. I personally wouldn’t go to the far north until closer to the summer solstice to really enjoy the midnight sun

Glad you're rethinking your time frames on the trip. Seemed a bit... ambitious, given that most of the more interesting routes lie in areas covered in snow until May. I rode my motorcycle from Boise ID to the coast of Oregon in April once. Blizzard conditions on the passes made for a memorable ride, and not in a good way.

I live at mile 0 on the Alaska highway in Dawson Creek, BC and the roads here are still terrible. We were hitting -37C still just a few days ago. It's hit or miss each year. After May long weekend there should be a pretty safe bet for no snow. Offroading during spring in the north here is generally a mess.

Recently my motorbike has been having some issues where it straight up died in the middle of the road. Its in the shop now but all the way where it died to the actual shop near home I had other people on bikes stop and help me. They'd put their food on my passenger foot rest and just push me as far as they could. They'd take time out of their work days to help me like that and there's nothing quite like the feeling of community you get when people make that effort.

snow dampens background noises. The reason snow is so good at absorbing sound waves is due to its structure. Snow is made of ice crystals, which have space between them. These open spaces absorb sound waves, creating that serene quiet that happens right after a snowstorm. One study found that just 2 inches of snow can absorb 60% of sound waves.

So to answer the question on why that truck stop is so busy, its likely one if not the last gas station on i-40 in AZ before you get into Cali. so everyone stops there to fill up before having to pay the higher prices in Cali. You should come back to Havasu or even a little farther south to Parker AZ in the spring/summer months so some colorado river time. and yes it will be hot, but the River helps with that

After many, many, many thousands of off payment miles in vans over the last 20 years. Here are a few suggestions. 1) Maxtrax recovery boards. They're longer than your current set. More stable as well. 2) A kinetic snatch rope. 30 feet should be fine. 3) A set of soft shackles. My current Promaster also has a three inch lift, off road shocks, a front skid plate and rear sumo springs. I've also driven across country over 50 times. Been tn Key West an driven to Prudhoe Bay. You shouldn't have problems in Canada but the haul road can be tough. Finally look into waterless dishwashing. Many experienced vanners clean dishes with vinegar. I haven't had a sink in my van for twenty years. But you have to clean immediately before food dries hard. It's good practice and keeps your van more tidy. Good luck!

If you have the funds, I would have the van looked at, you've been putting on lots of miles, and those dirt roads with all the bumps and vibrations will lose bolts and line clamps; at the standard tire garage will perform this task for about 100/150 dollars to look over a van like that and make sure everything is still tight, you hate to lose a hose or a linkage drive over a bolt that worked itself loose on those dirt roads. I have driven vans and trucks across the country and learned the hard way about checking these things; when they go, it costs much more money to fix.

I've been through a winter in Fargo ND, live in WY, and never once gotten stuck in that car. Would love to have something 4WD but know I won't be able to afford it. Love people helping out though. We've had some epic snow this year in WY and on our local FB page there are guys just posting "Stuck? Hit me up" to help. I think there's a little bit of boys wanting to play with their toys in there too ;) But regardless, so helpful to the FWD folks trying to survive.
