You can go for any colour between reds but to score 147 it has to be black every time because black is worth 7 points, pink 6, blue 5, brown 4, green 3 and yellow 2. To score 147 you have to go 15 reds and 15 blacks, that´s worth 120 points. After that you pot the colours in order: yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black. That adds 27 points so you have 147 now, that´s the only way

Everyone else has covered that he keeps coming back to the black because it scores the highest. But your observation that it's the one that's always in the right place - that's the real skill of the game. pocketing balls is almost the easy bit, finishing the shot with the cue lined up on the next shot is the real skill. It's not the black that's always in the right place, he's putting the cue ball in the right place for the black. (which is also why he's trying not to spread the reds around the table)

Top tips. Listen to the commentators. They know what they're on about. Also, make a note of the overall score. Here it's the best of 17 frames. Ding has 3, and Ronnie has 8 - therefore Ronnie needs just this frame to win outright. He'll have 9 frames, so cannot be beaten. No pressure. This is crucial, as in other frames you may watch, it could be 8 Vs. 8, making the final frame very important.

Agreed. Left-handed alone is somewhat of a challenge although Ronnie is somewhat ambidextrous so it is not as hard for him as it would be for other players. But the shot itself is really hard. Deep screw from midrange with such a small angle and margin for error. On top of that he is playing for position on the black which makes it even more difficult. And to top it all off, it is a shot to make a 147 which always adds additional pressure. All these things combined truly makes it the best shot in snooker history.

Ryan, he's potting the Black ball because it has the highest value of 7 point. In snooker, each ball has a specific point value: Red balls: 1 point each Yellow ball: 2 points Green ball: 3 points Brown ball: 4 points Blue ball: 5 points Pink ball: 6 points Black ball: 7 points Players score points by potting these balls in a specific order, starting with a red ball followed by a colored ball, and repeating this sequence until all reds are potted. After that, the colored balls are potted in ascending order of their point values. Snooker is a game of strategy and precision, in order to get to 147 point, he has to pot the Black ball until all of the Red balls are not on the tabled. When all of the Red balls have been potted. Then he can pot the Yellow, Green, Brown, Blue, Pink, and Black ball in this order to achieve the maximum score of 147 points.

Just to note: one of the important things about 'position', i.e. the place where the cue ball ends up, is that you generally don't want a position which creates a dead straight line between the cue ball, the object ball, and the pocket. This is obviously easier to pot because you just have to hit the ball straight, but what happens after you strike the object ball? When Ronnie needs to pot a black at one end of the table and then get the cue ball all the way back up for the yellow, he wants the natural angle on the black which will then send the cue ball on a path which doesn't just go straight into the same pocket but which sends it that way instead off a cushion or two. Otherwise he'd have to be doing a lot with spin/English in order to change the path of the ball, and this feels more uncertain because you're not dealing with straight lines but with curves.
@DusknRaidr28 күн бұрын
This is an important point nobody else has mentioned in Ryan's snooker reactions...the skill is in the position in which you leave the white cue ball where literally an inch out either way could ruin the next shot. Like chess moves, shot choice might be planned 2/3 in advance. The position you play for could make the pot easier, but the next positional shot harder, or by making a slightly more difficult pot, the next positional shot easier.... Pool, on a smaller table, bigger pockets and heavier balls requires much less "playing for position"

Theoretically a higher score is possible, 155. Its when no balls are potted, then a player makes a foul, leaving all the reds impossible to play, at which point the next player can nominate any color to be 'the red ball', and pot it. The colored ball then gets put back in its place. The player can then pot the black, creating a score of 1+7=8, and then continue to clear out the table with 147, giving the max of 155. But thats extremely.. EXTREMELY rare.

There are currently a bunch of people tied at 8th place who have 5 147's. It falls to 1 or 2 by about 30th place. There are about 128 World Snooker Tour players at any one time but bear in mind the table of 147's is over all time. Like so many things, a few people have all the action and that is what we see on TV, so at the very top it doesn't seem quite so rare. But in fact it is extraordinary.

Since then there have been only approx. 200 across all professional tournaments. The rate of them happening is increasing as the skills of the players have improved over time. Just an interesting thing to consider - these professional tables have very tight pockets when compared to the tables you find in most snooker clubs. The club I used to play in is owned by a former professional player [Nigel Gilbert - the first player to wear a glove at the Crucible] and he had 1 professional standard table so I have played on both to see the difference. Just an average player myself with a top break of 63 - mind you I did make that on the professional standard table so am pleased I made that many! LOL!

To make a 147 you have to pot the black after every single red, and then go for the other colours in order. If you go for the other colours (besides black) while there are reds on the table, your total will not add up to 147. So, that's where the skill comes in, to line up the black for a shot after every red.
@accskaguy21 күн бұрын
Wellll... You might have said his opponent didn't have any mistakes, but you're missing out on the cat and mouse game that usually opens a snooker game at this level. The red balls start out racked together right behind the pink ball. The usual tactic is not to just brute force a break, but rather just nudge the red balls, and try to bring the cue back with the right weight applied to ideally bring it back behind the yellow/brown/green ball line to leave a similar shot for the next guy. That tends to go back and forth until one of the reds are exposed enough to pounce on, and Ronnie knows exactly when to get that done. 😊
@vaudevillian7Ай бұрын
147 is a perfect (standard) score so it has to be the black to get the maximum score - you can only pot a colour ball 15 times while the reds are still on the table - once all the reds are potted you have to pot the coloured balls in order. Like if you want a 180 in darts you can only hit treble 20… Keeping the balls in the optimum place is the skill, it’s not convenience as much as the intention
@kenhewitt7357Ай бұрын

To give you an idea of the rarity by may 2019 Ronnie had played 10,957 professional frames of snooker and of those 15 where 147's, this means he got a 147 roughly every 730 frames. He also holds the record for the most 147's. So it is quite rare. An average frame would take around 20-25 minutes. I suggest a Judd Trump highlight video next or Ronnies 5 min 8 sec 147.

Here are the point values for all the balls: Red =1 point Yellow = 2 points Green = 3 points Brown = 4 points Blue = 5 points Pink = 6 points Black = 7 points. You begin each break (or inning) by shooting a red ball. You then shoot any colored ball, and back and forth between reds and coloreds. Since the black ball is worth the most points, most players will shoot it if they can. You score a 147 break by alternating 15 reds and 15 blacks for a total of 120 points. The other balls must be shot in order and add another 27 points. Yes, a 147 is rare. There have been 206 maximum breaks in professional snooker. There have been 326 no-hitters thrown by MLB pitchers. With 15 147s under his belt, he's like the Nolan Ryan (7 no-hitters) of snooker

147 isnt actually the highest break in snooker, it is possible to make a break of 155. Only once in tournament play has a break exceeding 147 happened when Jamie Burnett made 148 in qualifying for the UK championship in 2004. 155 breaks have been witnessed before but only in practice sessions. It is done when a player fouls a shot before any balls have been potted and upon fouling leaves his opponent snookered on all 15 reds. Doing this gives the opponent what is called a 'free ball' where he can pot a colour as a designated red, essentially adding a 16th red to the break. The colour is then replaced on the table. This is then followed by a colour being potted like you would normally and then the 15 reds in the usual sequence. So if you take the black with that designated 16th red and follow it with 15 more reds and blacks and the colours that would be 155 points not 147. Like i say, a break over 147 has only ever happened once in tournament play, and 155 only ever in practice, but it is possible.

Snooker is played with 22 balls, made up of one white ball (the cue ball); 15 red balls, valued at 1 point each; one yellow, 2 points; one green, 3; one brown, 4; one blue, 5; one pink, 6; and one black, 7. It's a ridiculously difficult game. Doesn't matter if you're good at pool

Also any golfer can hit a fluke and make a hole in one on a par 3 it's much harder to fluke 36 consecutive pots on a snooker table

He can go for any colour ball, but he won't get 147 unless he goes for a black every time. A 147 break in pro competition is about as unusual as a MLB no-hitter: there have been about 200 recorded 147s since the 1950s. And yes, his opponent did make a mistake - he tried to play against Ronnie.
