Very useful video. Excellent that Ben is in slow mo which helps show my son. Slightly unusual that Ben doesn't approach the ball with his stick head already on the ground, but it obviously works for him. The key thing with drag flicking is the result!! So many different styles amongst the top players.

This is a brilliant video! I had 20 kids wanting to learn how to drag flick at one session and the breakdown here was absolutely ideal to give them skill to take away and practice for next time. Thanks so much!!!

Thanks a lot for the breakdown of dragflicking. This is the best guide.

Very well explained tech. Putting some hardwork to that has worked for me very well. More practical stuff. Thanks

Totally agree. Approaching the ball with the stick in the ground may help young flickers make smoother contact on the ball - but as you point out the key is the result. What is clear is there is no one technique for drag flicking and we encourage young players to build on the principles and put the practice in to develop a style that works for them.

I'd actually go as far as saying that the drag flick is very similar to a wrist shot in terms of the mechanics between the ball/stick. Since the "head" of an ice hockey stick is curved, but for a field hockey stick, the body of the stick is curved (along the length of the stick). So the interaction between the 2 objects works in similar ways. It shot may have seemed weak in the video, but I'd definitely recommend search for videos from game situations. The ball is shot over 16yds (48ft).

i agree the shot did seem a bit weak on this video but if you look at these shots in a game, especially in the mens games this is a very powerful shot. field hockey goals are alot bigger than ice hockey goals and some people end up getting the ball in the top right and left corners which i can says from experience is very hard to go. i am only a junior female player but i have been playing for four years and i can tell you this is a very useful shot and also there is nothing wrong with the stick

How do you get the strength to drag flick
@jasper13767 жыл бұрын
I was too weak to do it too a year ago but from practice im way stronger, only downside being my right biceps bein 3x bigger than my left haha
@jcalpha1037 жыл бұрын
xgauravx1 seems to be a matter of technique rather than strength. Body type and arm length will affect the power too and were its generated.

how far away do you have to be from the ball when you are picking it up
@noonoo52412 жыл бұрын
Would get more power by moving back foot to follow stick direction rather than to his left .Right side of hip should be pointing towards goal at release of ball leaves you slightly unbalanced at the finish so correct by lifting front foot.As stated lots of different skills needed ...

As someone with experience in both sports (ice hockey/ball hockey/field hockey), hopefully I can provide a more reasonable explanation than th415263. The standard wrist shot wouldn't work because of the stick as you mentioned. Also I should be noted that the ball used in field hockey is alot heavier than ball hockey, it's bigger and more rigid as well. Wrist shot + ice hockey stick + field hockey ball doesn't go very far. (Continued in next reply)

Are there 2 drag flicking?, 1: like here, but 2: in your hockey thats what i do i and it works for me i see people do that, even on international lvl. My question is what is the best technique for drag flicking because i like the technique that i'm using but i want to know if this is worth practicing?

he does it completly different to me. Where his back foot is, my front foot it. It creates a longer drag, more power

Not to mean that this wasn't the correct approach to learn to do a dragflick, but as i attempted to teach myself through this video it just went all pear-shaped. I just started it out as a lifted push and ran onto, with more power ect. I think you are thinking to much about it, but great video.

Fair enough. I've never really played ice hockey so I've no clue how the game works :)

What you call a wrist shot, we'd call a push. We use that for passing. And no, you're wrong. This shot isn't "pretty weak", it's actually one of the most effective shots a person can use in field hockey, and that's why it's used when scoring. And have you ever used a field hockey stick before? Completely different. Another advantage is that you're allowed to raise the ball above ground level without breaking any rules with the drag flick. A standard wrist shot doesn't do that.
@Jokkl1112 жыл бұрын
you have to pick up the ball behind your body so you will get much more power into your dragflick
@martinjamieson4 жыл бұрын
The example guy’s feet are completely not where the coach said to be. He starts with his front foot beside the ball, puts his back foot well past the ball and then stretching his front leg out to plant.

I'm a Canadian with ice hockey experience (and playing in a gym in the summer with a ball for a puck and no skates, but same goal size/sticks/rules as ice hockey) and this looks very weird to me. I mean, wouldnt it just make sense to teach a standard wrist shot as is performed in ice hockey? This seems like a whole lot of "technique" for a shot that was pretty weak. Maybe it's the sticks, but I would destroy that ball AND be accurate with a ice hockey stick and a standard wrist shot.
@bigmoneymike33777 жыл бұрын
You're just being ignorant man. You dont know any of the rules or anything about the game. This technique is important during short corners (what happens when someone makes a foul close to the net), in which you arent allowed to have height on the ball when you hit it, which is the usual way of scoring; but you are allowed to flick the ball at height to score during a short corner, so drag flicking allows you to have a lot of power and height on the ball maximizing the chance of a goal. Idk what it is with the amount of ice hockey elitism on youtube too lol
