I've been waiting for Ryobi to come out with a large inverter / Powerstation for a while. Finally they have come out with a 1800W pure sinewave system that uses up to four of their 40V batteries. Unfortunately the product falls short. Here are my test results so far. I'll probably be returning the system :-(
Pros:
Nice packaging, 5 Year Warranty, hot swap batteries, can mix different size batteries, you already own batteries, Bluetooth App
Cons:
No regulated 12V Cigarette Socket, Can't Charge & use at same time, Only 2.1A USB, Can't run Microwave, Not 18V battery Compatible, USB Type C compatibility issues, Need 4 Batteries for large loads, Poor Display, No Watt meter, No MPPT solar charging.
My DIY Ryobi 2600W System: using 18V batteries: kzbin.info/www/bejne/onKkiHl5ipmce68
Additional batteries:
* Ryobi 40V 6Ah ( amzn.to/381aWqY )
* Ryobi 40V 4Ah ( amzn.to/385hrZO )
Other Powerstations with pass-thru charging and MPPT Solar:
* Maxoak Bluetti EB150 ( amzn.to/303TDBc )
* Jackery Explorer 1000 ( amzn.to/3sIggr3 )

I sure hope Ryobi makes improvements on this. I was really hopeful that this would be a good power station to put in my road trip van build because i have tons of ryobi batteries and tools but the cons that you pointed out are a real deal breaker. Seems like this is really only made for limited job site and power outage use. Thanks for making such a well educated video.

Chris, I appreciate the thorough testing and found your comment on the HD product website. I also was disappointed in the performance and for a load test only ran a 1500W space heater for 25 minutes on 2 x 6ah and 2 x 4ah full batteries. I can't justify the cost/convenience against the battery capacity limitations when compared to what 5 gallons of gas in my genset gets me. I had high hopes.

On the bright side it looks like Ryobi (and probably Milwaukee) are headed in the right direction. Based on your initial testing and your insight it looks like the best move is to continue using the 300W inverter with either 40v batteries or your 18v mod plate for small needs and count on Jackery, Goal Zero, and others for bigger off grid power needs for now. Thanks for sharing!

It’s so close to being great. They need to fix the over load issue with motors, add pass through both 120v and solar, add fast charge to the slots so it can be like a base station for batteries. Gen 2 of this will be nice if they take the advice everyone is giving them.

I like the idea. I picked up two myself. My use case is to charge my batteries during the day while I would be running the gas generator during an outage and then use these inverters to run the fridge and pellet stove through the night. My biggest complaint is the lack of passthrough charging. I'm excited to see if you can figure out a way to modify the unit for passthrough charging, and to see if you will demonstrate how to charge via solar (preferably via DC).

I found that if you plug up to 18v backwards it catches fire wile still working and fire wont go out until all 40v unplugged.:/ i asked hd for another on sale for 630 like I got the first and they typoed the discount and I got another coming for 180$ :D still want to see if it will parallel to my yahama 2200i generator. I just don't want to blow up another one. Let us know how the passthrough charging goes. Im going to do 2 6ah on seperat solar chargers for now. Might be cool.

Thank you for testing this. Like so many other testers in the field have said, I don't know why this shipped. I'd be okay with it if it could at least have a power through feature, that would give it a leg up on Dewalt and Ego. But at least it appears to work with a refridgerator, my primary purpose of getting it is to back up the fridge if we lose power for more than 12 hours. Here's hoping they come out with an 18v one+ multi-pack inverter (similar to your earlier design). Thanks again!

The fridge might be stalling as thermostat limits power when at required temperature.. if u leave the door open for a few the compressor should kick in.. wonder how much surge current a standard fridge like consumes and how long could the official ryobi vs diy 26000PS run the fridge alone for? heating lights etc can be done with other means.. seems fridges are on the tricky side needing pure sine and enough wattage to sustain.. so as a back up power unit for a standard fridge & a deep chest should work least 24hours?

I agree but ryobi is not forward thinking like Makita is. I have been an 18v customer for years but once I saw How Makita used two 18v in their X2 system I made the jump. Cost used to be a barrier but now I find myself amazed at the quality difference. The weed trimmer by Makita truly is awesome compared to my wasted money on the ryobi trimmer. I still like my ryobi tools but see a future with Makita as I transition over.. No way will I buy the 40v ryobi..will have to wait to see if Makita comes out with a power system...

With the 18V batteries, even the big 9Ah ones, there isn't nearly as many cells in parallel to share the load when compared to the 36V packs. The 18V packs just wouldn't be able to deal with any continuos loads over say 1000w unless you always had 4 big ones to share the load.

I was really excited about these, until I saw some of the details. The lack of pass-through charging was a huge miss by Ryobi. Also, a 1.5 amp SERIAL charging system means that even if you only have four of the 4ah batteries connected, you're looking at 10 hours to charge them all back up from empty and during that time, you can't use the unit for what it was designed to do. The other things you mention, like no cigarette lighter adapter and the odd choices they made for USB support, were very disappointing. The worst part is the net cost of buying this unit and the larger 40v batteries to make it worth having. It's quite a bit more expensive than similar products with dedicated batteries, and those offer better features and capacity. Ryobi missed the mark on this one, for sure.
@IM_A_BEAR_LOL
@IM_A_BEAR_LOL 3 жыл бұрын
Also, there is a sticker on the battery terminals that recommends you only use 5ah batteries or above. It might help with voltage drop in high power draw situations to be using 4 x 6ah HP batteries vs having 2 x 4ah batteries in the mix. I would think the type-C port issues are by design since power circuitry has to negotiate charging speed.

They certainly saved money in places, like, if you have AC power to charge it, you don't need the outlets. Without a good way to charge off solar, it is certainly a limited product in many ways. The manual is really thin for a product like this. You really don't know how much AC output you will get based on the charge and size of your 40v batteries... They suggest 5ah or larger, but the system should give better feedback for sure.

Mr Serendipity Sue, I've got a 1800W Ryobi 40V powerstation and a 3D printer and I'm trying to use it as a UPS. I basically need continuous pass through charging on this Powerstation. I saw that your 3D model needed to be tweaked to fit this model. I'm handy in Fusion360, Do you have that 3D Model? Is it on an Etsy store or something? I'd buy it if you were charging for it. Chris, one thing I have never seen is the reverse of this device and your power hacks--a Ryobi AC to DC adapter. So you could run stationary One+ devices by plugging them into AC instead of using up batteries. That need comes up every so often, especially with power hungry devices. Seems like there would be more to it than simply converting 120V AC to 20V DC. Something you could tackle in a future video?

This is to let the public know that there is a factory defect the first run was fine but one or two of the next runs have a defect to find out if your product is one of the defective ones it’s simple shut the unit off and unplug from the wall plug for batteries into the unit and let the unit sit for 7 to 10 days go back to the unit and check to see if all four batteries are charged if the battery in slot number three has one or two lights out do you have one of the defective units if any of the batteries are completely depleted then you have one with multiple defective in it these units will not only destroy a battery but they will also only give you 50% of the run time that they are supposed to if you have any batteries that this unit has destroyed even if the battery is two or three years old you should return it to Ryobi after contacting them and they should replace absolutely free as the defect is their responsibility as far as the unit goes it will work still but you should only use the batteries in the slots that are not defective usually it is slot number three that has the defect Ray will be at sometime in the future may also replace the unit but this is not known yet but the unit will destroy batteries and you will only get 50% of the run time this does not mean that Ryobi has not made a good product it just means that there are a few out there with defects quite a few

@@imaginarymask - no, you clearly don’t understand. AC power is ideally a sine wave that oscillates between a positive peak voltage and a negative peak (or valley) voltage. For 120V AC, the peak voltage of that sine wave is about 170 volts; and about 170 volts in the negative direction also. Batteries alone don’t produce that, and an inverter can be designed to take a range of DC voltages as input (there are 12V input inverters, and there are 48V input inverters as just a couple of examples). The inverter electronics for a lower input voltage would have components that operate at higher currents; the inverter electronics for a higher input voltage would have components that operate at lower currents. Assuming both produce the same output power.

IF YOU USED A WATT METER with your tests we could see the power draw. You have to be exceeding even the 1800W surge rating or your batteries are too low to deliver the needed wattage. Remember even if you had four 6ah fully charged batteries installed you only have theoretically 960 kwh. So lets say you need the full 1600 watt output, well guess what your run time has dropped from a hour to around 36 minutes. This is only provided the batteries are fully charged. Now to get the 1600W for just 10 minutes your batteries will need a combined 266kwh which is 27% remaining on four 6ah batteries or 1 full 6ah batterry plus a full 2ah battery. In theory a full 7.5ah can do the same job for 10 minutes by itself But I think you are exceeding the 1800w surge

these are the reasons these so called power stations (I don't consider these as actual power stations, the batteries are simply to small) are crap. I got several batteries for my ego stuff, I'm not paying over a thousand dollars for a battery hookup when these batteries are to small to hold any significant loads, It might be different if the stations were only a couple hundred bucks. Basically it turns your extra batteries into running a few lamps and some electric blankets. Good for emergencies but not at the crazy prices they want for the bare units itself. Heck this unit isn't even available to purchase yet.

I dont understand how batterries work on this. Doesnt one 40v 6 amp battery gives you 240 watts so x2 only gives you 480 watts, so x4 gives you 960 watts. If you mix the batteries with a 4 amp 40v the 6 amp batterries will only run at 4 amps....so i am not understanding how they are advertising this at 1800 watts..

The batteries are rated in Ah (Amp Hours). That is how long something can run. Ryobi doesn’t give a max current rating for their 40V batteries. But to get 1800W out , each battery needs to produce 450W or roughly 11Amps at 40V. 40V batteries actually range from 30-42V depending on their charge level
@randacnam7321

6 ampere *hours.* Remember that there is a time component. The reason for the 216Whr rating is that 3.6V is the nominal cell potential over its discharge, which is then multiplied by 10 for the number of cells in series and again multiplied by 6 for net cell ampere hours for 216Whr. It is not 240Whr as the cells are only at 4V when fully charged.

This is a BIG disappointment. Actually, I own this Ryobi and the Dewalt 1800-watt power station. The DeWalt is a massive disappointment as well. Neither power station has solar charging, pass-through charging, watt meters, or good displays. The Dewalt isn't even a pure sine wave so it's almost useless in most cases. The batteries on these "power tool" power inverters are also costly. Most people don't understand precisely how much battery power you need for basic things and these companies are playing into the lack of public knowledge.

Pass-through charging makes no sense to me. If you have 120 volts available why are you using a power station? The charger that is in this Ryobi and most similar systems is extremely slow. This is not a solar power station. During the day when the sun is up or I'm using a gas generator to charge camper batteries I use a fast charger to quickly charge the Ryobi batteries that I used overnight. I use this to power high-draw items like coffee pots and toasters when camping to preserve power in my RV solar bank until the sun comes up.

As a "power station", this product sucks at everything. There are other products that do way better for less money. Unless you just need more Ryobi batteries. - The batteries cost too much - Poor AC charging capabilities. Seriously, 1 at a time? - Can't use the station while charging - No option for solar charging (huge deal breaker) Did the engineers that designed this thing even use Ryobi tools in the field? I doubt it.

FYI: Do not use the "bars" on the battery as a power indicator. If you want to test whether an appliance will work, you must charge fully. The same is true for a Lithium (LIFOPO4) battery (12v/24v). The voltage may appear to be at 50% degradation, but the capacity is actually at 75% degradation. Why? Because those bars only show voltage, they do not show battery capacity (watt usage). To show capacity, you will need to use a watt meter from full charge. So - go back to my second sentence. The review is fine - but unless you keep a watt meter on the output, it is simply a "looky here" video.
