I used to use these EZ outs back in the 70’s when working on fighter jets in the us navy. I literally used it thousands of times and it worked 99.9% of the time if you were patient and did it just like you showed in the video. I also found that if you used a small hammer to lightly tap the top of the EZ Out as you slowly and gently turned it with the wrench you could extract even the most difficult fasteners. Great video Vince!!

EXCELLENT VIDEO!!!! Followed all the steps...extracted broken stub easily.. I replaced with OEM antenna. One thing I added was a dab of Marine Grade Dielectric Grease after blowing metal shavings out of the socket...figured it would keep the moisture out of the hole if I have to do this again!!!!

Was listening to the video as I was doing things around the house and would peek at the video here and there to make sure I was watching a decent video with all the possible innuendos I was hearing. Funny! But great job, I snapped mine off of an F150 and the dealership wants an arm and a leg to replace the whole things. I'll invest in the Ryobi extractor and try it myself because it just might work for me and save me a few hundred dollars. Thanks Again for the laughs.

VCG working on cars? Dreams do come true! I have had very little luck with easy outs as well. I did get lucky on an exhaust stud recently and a broken bolt in a distributor. Never had luck with brake bleeder screws though, hah! Usually just have to ghetto bleed it or drill and tap larger. Where I am, the rust sets everything so hard. Def need to set it with a hammer. In my experience the more the better. It's snapping the easy out that really ruins your day! Glad this one worked out for you. :)

The biggest thing about easy outs that people don’t seem to understand is that they are great for situations like your broken antenna or other things like that. What they aren’t great for is trying to remove a grade 8 bolt that someone cross threaded so bad that the head snapped off trying to remove it. They put a small easy out in it and break it off inside of the bolt and then you have to drill through something harder than a coffin nail plus the bolt. As an automotive tech I’ve seen it a thousand times. I’m not dicking around with stripped hardened bolts. If an easy out isn’t removing it with a small amount of force and maybe a little bit of heat then I’m drilling the whole bolt out, installing a helicoil, and shipping it. Just have to make sure you always have some good sharp drill bits handy. I’ve had great luck with Viking magnum super premium bits over the years. Stay sharp and cut through hardened bolts like butter.

I ended up getting just the small extractor from the auto parts store. Took a while to drill the hole into the top of the broken stud (2015 Tacoma). Eventually, as I started to back the drill bit out, the stud came about half way up the shaft. I used the extractor to get it the rest of the way. Word of warning-an after market replacement antenna will not work with the Tacoma, no matter how many adapters come with it. I've had to order a Toyota OEM mast.

None of the part stores in my area left-handed drill bits in stock so I gave this a try with Ryobi's extractor kit. I started with a small bit and stepped it up until I felt the hole was large enough. I tried tapping it in but was kinda worried with it being on the roof of my suv. I just put the extractor bit into my drill then ran it slowly in reverse. Came right out! A new antenna base for my suv would've cost $90+ for sure.

I don't know why a lot of people say that they don't like them that extractors don't work it don't have good luck with him ECT. They have always worked flawlessly for me so much so in fact that 1 is always in my pocket. There are ascertain group driver bits that are always in my right hand pants pocket that is because they are driver bits that I use all day long everyday and it just so happens that one of those bits happens to be an Irwin extractor bit.

Vince... You've got to try a "Speed Out" set. Left hand drill bit on one side, flip it over and an EZ out on the other. Big box stores have them and they actually work as designed. The drill bit side isn't the greatest on harder screws but for the price, it's hard to beat.

If the bolt is loose inside, you can take a needle point and wiggle the bolt in small clockwise circles. The bolt well rotate counter clock wise and unscrew itself. Worked for me but agian the bolt was loose inside.
@Zachariahfml
@Zachariahfml 5 жыл бұрын
@VCG Construction I would only recommend it as a last resort. You break off one of those and good luck drilling it out. I'd also recommend using counter clockwise twist drills to drill out broken fasteners. Sometimes the drill bit is enough to get it out. But you don't wanna break off one of those screw extractors. It sucks I tell ya

Great Video. I wasn't as lucky or patient. When the stud portion of my 2012 Tundra antenna broke off, it broke at an angle making it very hard to drill a hole and keep the bit centered. Hole ended up too far to the side. I guess I have to rip my a-pillar and get a new assembly. My idea is to cut the coax cable on the existing and new assembly and then put a typical female coax cable screw on fitting on either end of the cut coax and screw them together with a male-male threaded cable coupling. I am no Antenna engineer, so I don't know if that will reduce the reception of the antenna and I will have to wrap and tape off this coax coupling joint so it doesn't rattle in the fender well, but I really don't want to take the interior trim all apart to get the cable unplugged from the radio and the satellite antenna in the A-piler. As long as it looks right and gets some AM/FM... I really don't listen to the radio much either... stream music over blue tooth from the phone.

Patience does pay off with those things. And not drilling deep into the screw is also key, as the chances you'll be in the center are miniscule, which will mess up the threads. Also note that there is a difference between screw and bolt extractors, so buy the right kit!

Left handed drill bit to start can sometimes pull it out
@jdreynolds29
@jdreynolds29 5 жыл бұрын
It wasn't mentioned in the video or on the packaging I guess that you read to us but it is considered best practice to use a left-handed twist drill bit to drill the center hole. Many times when using a left-hand twist drill to make the center hole in preparation for using the spiral extractor (if it is a situation where it is a broken off fastener or a stripped out head, but not necessarily rusted, corrosion, or Loctite threads) the spiral extractors are not even necessary bc the left-hand twist drill will bite the Fastener and proceeded to extract it before even needing a spiral extractor
@VCGConstruction
@VCGConstruction 5 жыл бұрын
This would have been true in this situation!! Didn’t have them available!!
@jdreynolds29
@jdreynolds29 5 жыл бұрын
@@VCGConstruction yeah I don't have very many left-handed twist drills only a few. I have several sets of bit extractors but the individual extractor bit that I have in my pocket all the time of course it's a smaller size 1 but it's the quarter inch hex bit that has the spiral on one side and I left handed drill on the other end. And many times I don't end up needing to flip the pit over to use the spiral end because the fastener will end up and threading just with the left-handed drill. One of the best things about this Urban bit that's always in my pocket is only paid $0.74 for it earlier this spring when I got a pretty sizable clearance Irwin tool haul from Lowe's. Several of these bits were in there.
