Ryobi weed wacker instructions tell you to remove spool by unlocking the spool housing. This video shows how to replace the string on the Ryobi weed wacker without removing the spool.
Two viewers to Field Guide to DIY wrote in telling me you don't have to remove the spool. We tested and, sure enough, you don't.

Just wanted to say I had a meltdown trying to rethread our whacker and it was so stressful and terrible, but after watching your tutorials on both the “easy” and “traditional” way to rethread, it made everything so simple for me. Thank you so much for your instruction!

I found that on my first string replacement that I could not get the string through the hole going straight through because it appeared to be blocked. Sure enough, there was still some string wound onto the spool but it had welded onto itself. So I removed that partial string and then started over replacing the string with the method that you showed here. Perfecto!

I had a model older than this one that I love. My sister has difficulty with tools that are too heavy and she actually loved mine and found it easy to use kzbin.infoUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . This is a newer model but was even lighter which she really appreciates. She enjoys it and I no longer have to go to her house to trim as she can handle it fine. Haven't used it enough to comment on the battery life but lithium batteries last longer than the old style. Being cordless makes it easy to trim the far edges of the property. The entire yard can be trimmed with one charged battery.

My problem is getting the head to twist back into lock when you’re trying to put it back on. I feel like it takes the strength of a gorilla to do it. The first time we put it in a Vice and my son had to help me. Now I’m by myself and get it back on. I have no idea what to do. Same issue here! However I realized what I needed to do was to get a small flathead screwdriver into all the cracks of the moving parts of the head because all of the cracks fill with grass clips and dust and do not let the head attach freely and as easy as it should. I hope that makes sense. Basically you should be able to just use one hand to grab the little arrow edges when the head is off and be able to shift it back-and-forth real easily and if not, that means that there’s so much dirt and crap wedged underneath that it’s not able to move as freely as it should.

Lorinda, great question. I would suggest lining up the arrows as shown in the video and if you still can’t see daylight through it, you probably have some dirt or grass stuck in there. Get a wire coat hanger and snip it with some pliers, wire cutters, or tin snips. Make about an 8 inch long straight piece of wire from the coat hanger and try to feed it through. Let me know how that goes.

Yeah, this rewind method works great and is per the instructions....EXCEPT....when line breaks on one side or the other at the metal eyelet and fair amount is still wound on spool. You cannot grasp the broken end with the narrowest of needle nose pliers, nor hook it out with a pick. Easy enough to undo the spool but unless you have the hands of Andre the giant you cannot grasp to put by ack together. Even the largest oil filter wrench will not grasp it. I have only had the EZ reload available and work once or twice in two years in near year round edging in Southeast Texas. Grrrrr. Engine starts easily every time but does not work without properly situated line. If there was some kind of lock slot to hold spinbase still it would be doable.

@mettamorph4523 11 ай бұрын
hi MK..yeah. that "bump" move is not intuitive IMO. As you are working, you're supposed to mildly TAP the ground with the green button on the trimmer head. New string gets released off the spool with each tap, until it runs low and needs to be refilled. I guess at refill time the string stays short when you "bump". I'm new to this tool.

It isn't a good bet in my experience. My spool wouldn't run the new filament through. No way, no how, no matter how much I fiddled, re-watched the videos, lined things up, and used their own filament instead of the generic green stuff. Good luck to you.

@@patzuzack1088 that doesn’t sound right. If the line is through the channel in the center of the head, then it should wind through the eyelets. You may need to try this way in this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2m5nqmOaJmYn8U
