This lack of child independence in UK/US is really weird. I'm from Estonia and as kids we always went everywhere. When I went to first grade, my mom walked me to school for couple days to make sure I know the route and that was about it.

Part of it is that all the stuff we can get to that is actually important like a store or school can only be gotten to in a timely sense with a car, at least in the more rural and suburban areas of the States. There are no corner stores or the like within walking distance of each other because of zoning. There is no reliable public transportation because everything is spaced out so much. I grew up in the Philippines where I walked everywhere, but the area was a lot smaller and more compact and I could get anywhere I needed to within 5 miles/8 km. In comparison, the area in the States feels many times larger, where it becomes 25-30 miles/40-48 km just to get to a store or school. Even worse in Texas or Alaska where some people commute 100 miles/160 km or even more to get to any civilization.

When I was a small kid in suburban New Jersey, late 60's, my parents would send me off to the store for cigarettes, half mile (1km) away. My reward was money for a candy bar or comic book. (Richie Rich :0) People aren't different, news, and social media are different, life here is still as safe as it always was.

Yeah mate I'd never send my kid anywhere by themselves especially living in London. Like by the time you're 11-12 in this city at least I think you start being trusted to go to school by yourself (depending on where it is) - but there's so many damn crazy people out there that sending your child anywhere further than the local corner shop could be seen as a risky act. Of course though, sometimes people can't afford to be shepherding around their child 24/7, so some do grow up relatively independent, but in some areas (namely, low income areas) that does hold increased risk of your child being scooped up to get involved in some dodgy shit from a young age. Dunno how it is in the countryside parts of England/UK though, or other cities, but I think that's a valid fear here in London.

Quick FYI on power rangers, it's the American adaptation of super Sentai in Japan, the scenes of the fights in suits and robots were the Japanese scenes with the Japanese actors in the suits, the rest of the story was done in America, completely different story than super Sentai, and power rangers still makes new episodes over 20 years later.

After seeing Chris's video on the Tachineputa museum, I looked up the festival and realized I was going to be in Japan at the same time it was happening (this was 2019, so I lucked out in terms of timing). I spent a week in Aomori prefecture and saw the festival in three cities (Nebuta in Aomori city, Neputa in Hirosaki, and Tachineputa in Goshogawara). All of them were phenomenal, but I have to give the nod to Tachineputa as the best of the bunch. Seriously, watching eight-storey-tall floats getting pulled out of a building that looks like a space shuttle hangar is an indescribably amazing sight. It seriously gave me shivers and I was grinning from ear to ear the whole time. If you are ever in Japan in early August, you owe it to yourself to pay a visit. It's absolutely phenomenal.

For the festival talk at 6 mins in. There is a festival in Toyama where they will just crash two floats into each other. When I went one year, one managed to stay up despite all the crashes so they just invited locals to take it apart by hand or cane. Seemed like good fun, even though at the time I had no idea what was going on for it or the language.

I didn't expect Chris to have a similar answer to my own about growing up. I grew up in Michigan in the US, and while I lived in metro Detroit, we would visit the farm my grandfather grew up in in the middle of nowhere in a tiny Finnish settlement up north (my grandma also came from one, but MUCH farther away...and it was sold, so we couldn't go play there). Anyway it became apparent to me pretty quickly that my peers had no idea what it was like to run around in forests unsupervised and I knew it was a pretty special experience I had. Sucks for everyone else.

I love telling this history of Okinawa. It's a bit sad because it's about WWII & Okinawa. In the aftermath, Okinawa was pretty much decimated, so as soon as it was possible, a group of businessmen of Okinawan heritage from Hawaii [my husband's uncle was 1 of them], shipped over many pigs and plants which thrived due to our similar climate. So when people say, 'This looks like Hawaii!" there's a good reason for it!

The Japanese show Super Sentai (スーパー戦隊シリーズ) was used to make the American Power Ranger show. Since you don't see their faces while fighting they used the super sentai fighting scenes then hired actors and wrote and shot the story elements around the already made Japanese sections.

My colleague is investigating japanese festivals, and there is indeed one where they destroy the floats! While floats and shrines are venerated in most festivals, they are elaborate, beautiful, decorated, some are carried, some are so big they are on wheels. It would really have been a good spot for you to answer the more negative question to "changing" japanese culture Ryotaro. I think an insider perspective is important, and there IS a large divide in Eastern/Western impressions of Japan, so I'm a little disappointed that you didn't go more serious there. For instance, if I had to give a 'negative' review of Texas, I would be hard pressed for a concrete answer, but I would still give it and understand my biases when giving such an answer. So I would have liked to hear your answer. Again, for example, since I'm a Texan working in the Russian Far East, my opinion has tinges of biases, and it's hard for me to see the internal issues than someone from the Far East would understand, it would be great if myself (and others) got the "insider trading" view.
