This is why I love these guys. AFTER losing, he STILL makes a video about HOW he lost, what he did wrong, or potential reasons on what he did wrong and right. And the reason is because they are more about teaching and spreading the art and not proving who the best is. Grats to Barnett for being a freakin BEAST of a man, and congrats to Ryron for proving once again why I love Jiu Jitsu.

It's not very sportsmanlike in my opinion to have so many Gracie win videos available on youtube, but Barnett's submission of Ryron Gracie had to be taken down for copyright reasons due to the insistence of the Gracies. If it's all about sportsmanship, and learning, lets see it.

Man, listening to you talk about Josh Barnett being so protective of your ankle when he could have ripped it off, and then hearing you guys talk about the difference between street self defense vs an opponent who doesn't know jiu jitsu compared to a jui jitsu black belt that has the ABILITY and CAPACITY to do even more damage to you but the respect and restraint NOT to just really was a beautiful demonstration for me of what the jui jitsu mindset is all about, and makes me even more determined to train in BJJ, particularly in the agracie style. I'm here in NYC and looking to begin my journey in martial arts and BJJ and so excited about what it's going to mean for me and my life.

Much respect to Ryron, not only did he put his reputation and ego on the line (something most wouldn't do in the first place), he even risked possibly hurting his business with the event that he was to be submitted. But it was such an interesting and beautiful roll, and you got to see such high level Jiu Jitsiu in such a raw form, in a situation with such a large weight discrepancy. I think he did it for the art of Jiu Jitsiu. I'm sure the Grand Master is very proud of his Grandson, and I gotta thank Ryron for being an inspiration and a sensei to me even through the medium of his videos. No disrespect to Barnett either, he is definitely the man.

How about the fact that Ryron went 13 minutes with Josh Frickin Barnett. I mean Josh is a former UFC heavyweight champion and a World No Gi Jiu Jitsu Ultra Heavyweight champion who has never been submitted in his entire mma career for crying out loud. He is currently ranked #8 in the world in mma and is probably the most dangerous grappler in mma (and has been for a loooong time) alongside Werdum and Frank Mir and of the three I would personally pick Josh just based on raw grappling strength. I was super impressed that Ryron was able to neutralise Josh for so long, even regaining guard and only got subbed in the end after going for an attack of his own. On this day there can only be one winner and that winner is Jiu-Jitsu.

pete ss That sort of dissmissive sour grapes attitude is fine for fanboys, but guys like Ryron are as good as they are because they put their egos aside and logically analyze what they did wrong, rather than making excuses. If you try training for a couple of years you'll learn to do the same thing, or you'll stagnate and never improve.

pete ss weight does make a difference. If you have 2 evenly matched guys both same skill level the heavy guy will generally win, he has the ability to suffocate more enrgy out of the smaller guy and drain him quicker. and is also usually the stronger person... so size and strenght do play a big factor in a match of two evenly skilled opponents.

What doesn't kill you make you better as the old saying goes . That is the reason why GJJ/BJJ is where it is now, you take what is useful and throw that is not. I am a Josh Barnett fan. I would have like to have seen the fight. But I do understand that the Gracie's are aware of their name value and do not want to give away what people are willing to pay to see. Also, Barnett is a mountain of a man compared to Ryron. Both of these men are top level martial artist. Both styles of fighting are excellent. The one thing I will say about the Gracie's is they have down more for wrestlers than anyone else. They shocked the world by showing that a extremely well trained small man can defend himself and emerge victorious over a bigger man. Catch wrestling had disappeared from the earth. The Gracie's made grappling a sensation again. Remember, catch wrestling and the carnival treatment of it with rehearsed preplanned outcomes is what destroyed grappling in the early 1900's. Almost 90 plus years later the Gracie Family brought respect back to grappling. I will never say anything disrespectful about the Gracie Family. I will always be thankful for them and what they have contributed to the history of the grappling arts. Anyone who does, does not know history and has no conception that these men are warriors. They do not fight publically to wave a belt around and scream I am the best. They do it for their family art and to show the effectiveness of it. These two men had nothing ill to say about Josh. They did not put down his art. Everything they said is 100% accurate. I appreciate the analysis they gave.

Just to name a couple: Josh was stepped over your head when you wrapped your legs around him; also, your left leg was completely free when he attacked your foot and you tapped. If you pay monthly fees you don’t even have to step out of your home you pay monthly fees you can be a black belt in 5!yeard you don’t even have to roll. Or compete let alone step on a mat you get a video sent to you online and in 1” years you can be a certified Gracie university certified instructor. Just by laying a monthly fee you can have a higher ranking than a Ryan Gordon andre Galvao and be a certified teachers a fro buying videos which you don’t even have to watch and you can be a certified instructor or Renan and ryrons Gracie jj I did this in boxing. Never fight or anything but I bought world titles from hat paying s monthly fee for 10 years now I train other boxers and Gracie jj students and I’ve never even been in a ring or mat It’s about integrity and being a true self defense art form

I think this is possibly the most awesome piece of tactical marketing I've every seen. This is a demonstration of a God showing mortals that he can take defeat with honour and learn from it like a true master. This will be so motivating for their students who say to themselves, wow, if it's ok for him to get beat, and be cool and keep going, it's totally ok for me to get beat. That's what I got from it. These guys are undisputed masters of their game and could mangle and destroy 99.9 % of other bjj practitioners in the world. Big respect, this is mastery and next level Jiu-jitsu.
