This is such a fun scenario! In my first playthrough, I got blasted, obviously. In second, the Shipwreck salvos sunk Yorktown but she sucked up all of them so, worth it. My counter fire with TASMs was completely defeated because NJ decided to fire first the TASMs and then TLAMs. Then my Harpoon salvo sunk Sovremenny, I guess picket works both ways. But that was actually good, because with all missiles out of the way, I got to sail NJ right into Kirov's face and blast him with 16". Glorious.

It might be a good idea to edit out long periods of 'skipping time' or where nothing of note happens, like in this video where you are waiting for the T-LAM's to run out of range. @@ryu1940If you are recording your mic in a separate track from the game audio it would make for easier editing, you can cut and splice the video game image/audio to match the action, and let your talking voiceover do it's own thing instead of being locked to the moment on screen, meaning if you were mid sentence you could jump the game forward and let your VO complete the thought without having two sets of game sounds overlap. Kind of a hybrid between real-time commentary and an after the fact voiceover. When you start and when you end your recording you can also record yourself making a few transition audio sound bites like "jumping forward here" "back to the action" etc., to insert in the final video as jump cut transitions (or you could always go with the SpongeBob SquarePants "Twelllve miiinuttteess laaater" intermissions), then you will have a library to use that sounds natural in the video; you'd be shocked how much different people sound from day to day, hour to hour, is gravely in the AM, gets hoarse from talking a long time, etc. You could also run it through any standard or more advanced/new AI/ML audio filters (high-pass filter/vocal base boost, remove plosives, remove "umm"s, cut out background noise) that can give you a podcaster/KZbinr quality mic sound without having to invest in the physical gear (just fix it in post!). Or you can run it through a speech to text output before editing so you can read your commentary as a written script, and more quickly see which bits you want to keep and what is yapping, which need to be time locked to the action on the screen, and what is your Ted Talk exposition that can be cut down or moved around if needed. Or just record it straight, push the upload button and call it a day, both extremes are perfectly valid, do what you enjoy, cheers mate 🍻

In my playthrough of this scenario, I kept my ship in EMCON and didn't get shot at, until the Tu-95 got just within range of my SM-1 and I launched two at it. Presumably, the Bear's crew went: "Yep, that's an FCS radar, we can classify these as 'hostile' now." The SM-1 took out the Tu-95, but the missiles were already on the way. I changed course and ordered flank speed in hopes of getting out of the way, but it didn't work and I lost the Ticonderoga. I pushed ahead with the Iowa still in EMCON and got most of the way to the Soviet flotilla unmolested. Its TASM salvo took out the Kirov, but my ship got detected and ID'ed by a helicopter when trying to get within Harpoon range of the Sovremenny. It was game over for me from that point onwards.

New Jersey and Yorktown were very close to each other and they actually stopped all SSNs but it was super close, CIWS saved my bacon. I was pretty spooked, because I hadn't realised the P3s were still flying low and hadn't picked up the two sea contacts. In the end it took forever to finish the mission because I had missed the spy boat and NJ had to turn around and hunt it down. Sea-skimming supersonic missiles with 135 nm range and flying LO-LO means that unlike other Soviet missile, there isn’t a high-flying cruise phase that long-range SAM systems like SM-2ER can take advantage of. The only upside to facing them is that their “short” range compared to their Soviet supersonic AShM systems means their platforms are closing for longer, and thus can be picked off by aircraft and longer ranged TASM missiles.

The thing is that Kirov's bow, just like a modern Aegis ship, has a huge magazine of missiles with a ludicrously large amount of liquid propellant and high explosives. The top down down attack of the Harpoon seems to easily damage these magazines, and the game seems to model secondary explosions.

Yeah it sucks it is like an all or nothing thing. Now I play with the voice call outs turned off and it definitely hurts my SA if I'm focused on something else with the map. I need some voice to trigger stuff in my brain to say hey man you better check on that really quick.

I'd be interested to hear your take on the actual effectiveness of modern missiles vs that much armor. Those BB's were built to shrug off an equivalent amount of explosives but fired from a gun instead of a launch rail. Looking at the sinking of the Musashi and Yamato. The amount of ordnance required to actually sink one of these ships seems to me to be way in excess of what the Kirov and/or Sov carries. Specifically armor piercing and below water line type damage. Maybe a mission kill by rendering the fire control radars and optics useless... idk. In my mind it seems that the only real option those soviet ships would have is to launch everything and hope New Jersey doesn't chose to hunt them down. Tell me why i am wrong.
@ryu194025 күн бұрын
Yeah they certainly had armor but even with Yamato, I think the first bombs hit at 12:40 in the afternoon and within an hour or so the super structure was completely decimated and she was already fatally wounded having taken on thousands of tons of water and needing to counter flood an engine room to try and stay upright. Certainly accounts of it sinking taking hours is true but it doesn't take long before a ship is fatally wounded. Having walked around on the Iowa and the Missouri I can definitely imagine pretty catastrophic damage with fire if the super structure went up from a few missile hits and that spreading in a bad way.

Thanks for the reply :D And now i'm sad, you're probably right, if everything topside is smashed or aflame... And if she isn't in guns range it really is just death of a thousand cuts. CV did replace BB after all. Just imagine the fury of Iowa ablaze and within guns range.. Hehe

@@Ptolemusa yeah absolutely and i’m the book Fleet Tactics the author talks about the different uses the Japanese and Americans had for their battleships in the Pacific. For the US they saw the writing on the wall and tended to keep their BBs with the carriers for added AA protection to give to the carriers while the Japanese still even later into the war were trying to sail their battleships alone without carriers hoping to catch the American CVs at night in close when the planes couldn’t fly. This was extremely poor decision making that stayed with the Japanese Navy to the end.

The P-500 has a 1000 kg SAP-HE warhead and flies at Mach 2 at sea level. We can compare that to the navweaps website's gun tables (by the late Nathan Okun) as a reference, where conveniently the Iowa class's own shells have a similar mass. The Iowa's guns fire shells at more than mach 2 at sea level, but they begin slowing down right away and are going about Mach 2 at a range of 6000 yards. Navweaps has nice set of tables describing armour penetration vs range for many WW2 naval guns, and from those we can see that at 6000 yards a shell from an Iowa can penetrate about 25 inches of cemented armour with a perpendicular impact. The Iowa's belt is 12.1 inches thick slanted at 20 degrees from vertical (equivalent to about 13" vertical armour), which is clearly nowhere close to enough to stop that. Now I have no idea what the design of the P-500's payload is, so I can't say whether it has equivalent ballistic performance to a 16" AP shell. As it is described as a 'Semi-AP' warhead, it presumably sacrifices some armour penetration for extra explosive filling. But so long as its a bit more than 50% as good at penetrating as the Iowa's own 16" shell is, a main belt penetration is possible assuming the missile hits broadside to the ship. A single main belt penetration by a 1000 kg payload would be crippling, multiple would almost certainly sink the ship. And of course, let's not forget the alternative payload: a 350 kT nuclear warhead, which could wipe out the whole battlegroup, let alone one ship. Conclusion: the P-500 is most certainly a major threat to an Iowa class.

@@nerd1000ify Thank you, this was the kind of wet towel and spear to the heart conclusion i was dreading. In the best case the warhead splatters and does a lot of damage, in the worst case it is hard enough to dig in and do some serious damage. Just looking at the missile, it really is just a jet fighter without the wings and cockpit. And the nuke option... Having just watched 1940's latest video about the missile sponge. it really puts it into perspective how important it would be to soak up these huge and expensive beasts and to take out the ships that carries them. I have some thinking and reading to do.

I'm curious if you can make the TLAMs inadvertently hit a ship by dumb launching them essentially like a WW2 torpedo spread. Wait, imagine the effectiveness of such an attack on a large formation of ships. Of course it depends on what altitude they fly at. Also, I'm mildly disappointed with AEGIS and somewhat questioning the effectiveness of Soviet CIWS.

Aegis is pretty good, I think the limiting factor here is the SM-2 range. I'm sure they are modelling some early block but I think the navy officially has on their website the SM-2MR block III as 90nm versus the one we have in game which is 40nm. If we had greater range you could start shooting down more of the SS-N-19 popups earlier and wither them down a bit before they got to your fleet.

I think if you shot down the helos you might have not been fired at. The AI is not smart enough to consider your contacts hostile based on that.

That is interesting to hear because I've definitely have done a similar thing in a play through where I stayed at EMCON but fired at the TU-95 to see what would happen and immediately the Kirov launched her shipwreck missiles so I would be curious to know if shooting down helicopters received the same response.

First of all, why would he do that, what is enjoyable about playing with US ships that have technology from 1995, I know not every ships has tech from 1995 but some do and how could it be enjoyable to dominate soviet early 1980s ships which did not receive any upgrades in late 1980s due to economic situation in the USSR
