Ryuichi Sakamoto - opus (piano tutorial)

This MIDI file is the official one that was included in a floppy disk released with the album BTTB limited edition in Japan. Sakamoto recorded his performance into the file using his Yamaha MIDI piano. It was meant to use with Yamaha piano players such as Disklavier. The file contains even some wrong notes he actually played and the precise movement of the sustain pedal. You can find the limited edition in the used market, which contains the sheet music too. The floppy disk contains only the eight songs below.

Additionally, there is an official scorebook of BTTB which doesn’t contain the files.

使用したMIDIファイルは、BTTBの初回限定盤に付属するフロッピーディスクに収録されていた公式のものです。坂本龍一自身がアルバムのレコーディング時にMIDIピアノで記録していたもので、本来はヤマハのディスクラビア等の自動演奏ピアノで再生するためのものです。録音時のミスタッチやペダルの細かな動きまですべて記録されています。限定盤はメルカリなどで入手でき、これには楽譜も付属しています。
また、同曲のファイルがヤマハのデータショップやmumaで販売されていますが、これが公式のものか否かは未確認です。

Ordinary sustain pedals can output only on-off binary data (or trinary data including half-pedal). However, the pedals of MIDI piano and Disklavier can output in 128 levels. The animation on the bottom right of the video indicates the data in fine detail though it looks a bit subtle. This animation was captured from Pianoteq’s UI which processes the 128-level data properly.
通常のキーボードのサステインペダルはオン･オフの2値か、ハーフペダルを含めた3値のデータしか出力できませんが、MIDIピアノやディスクラビアのサステインペダルは128段階の出力が可能です。画面右下のペダルは（少し分かりにくいですが）その細かい動きを表しています。ちなみにこのアニメーションはPianoteqの画面からキャプチャしたものです。Pianoteqはちゃんと128段階のペダル情報を処理してくれます。
The bar numbers on the left of the video start at the number 2, so these are off by one bar compared to those of the sheet music. This is because the metadata such as sysex is recorded on the first bar of the MIDI file.
細かいことですが、画面左に現れる小節番号は2番から始まるため、楽譜の小節とは1つズレています。これはMIDIファイルの1小節目にsysexやメタデータが記録されているのが原因です。
On this MIDI file, all the notes are recorded on the same channel. For that reason, I added the information that separates the left hand from the right one in order to make this tutorial easy to see. When inputting it onto Synthesia referring to the official sheet, I happened to find an interesting thing. Sakamoto didn’t play the song exactly according to the sheet. There are some differences in voicing. For example, he actually played some fifths that are missing on the sheet, and conversely, he didn’t play some thirds that exist on the sheet. Really interesting. If you wanted to emulate the BTTB perfectly, it might be better to follow this data instead of the sheet.
このMIDIファイルは全ノートが同一チャンネルに記録されており、今回、チュートリアルを見やすくするために左手と右手の情報を追加しました。同じく限定盤に付属する公式楽譜と照らし合わせながらSynthesiaの画面に入力していったのですが、その途中で興味深いことが判明しました。教授は自分の楽譜どおりに弾いていません。ボイシングが違う箇所がいくつかありました。楽譜にはない五度を足して弾いていたり、逆に楽譜に存在する三度が演奏では抜けていたりと、結構な差異があります。面白いですね。BTTBの響きを完全に再現したければ、楽譜ではなくこのデータに即して弾いたほうが良いかもしれません。
The characteristic of the MIDI files of BTTB is that you can see the precise bar-lines in the data that Sakamoto played live in fluctuating tempo. To make it possible, a lot of tempo events are elaborately written into every single bar. I guess that the engineer calculated and input these events in order to match the note timing with each beat. Thanks to this, you can get a clear view with neatly separated bars on tracks, even though it is live recorded data in which the tempo fluctuates. In general, bars and beats in live recorded MIDI data without metronome signals don’t make sense. However, the files of BTTB are an exception.
BTTBのMIDIファイルの特徴は、教授が生で弾いた時のテンポの揺れたデータに、ちゃんと正しい小節線が引かれている点です。それを実現するために、各小節ごとに細かくテンポチェンジの情報が書き込まれています。おそらくエンジニアかマニピュレータの方が、演奏のタイミングと拍が合うように計算しながらテンポチェンジをポチポチ入力されたのだと推察されます。そのおかげでSynthesiaの画面上でも、テンポの揺れた生演奏にも関わらず小節線が綺麗に区切られ、曲の見通しがよくなりました。通常、クリックなしの生演奏を記録したMIDIデータは、小節や拍が意味をなしませんが、ありがたいことにBTTBのファイルは例外です。

The midi files you can buy on Yamaha shop don’t contain the left and right data, so you have to manually add the data to them by using software such as Synthesia ✋🎹🤚🖱️ I actually did that!

Yes, that’s right! The amazon link leads to the official scorebook which does NOT include the floppy disk with the MIDI files. If you want the MIDI files, you have to get the CD ”BTTB Limited Edition” (BTTB初回生産完全限定盤).
