I make it a point not to use weaknesses. Figuring them out is cool, but actually using them more often than not just ruins the fun of figuring a boss out for me. That and if I intend to use weapons at all it's way more interesting using them on stages.
@JeremiahBostwick4 жыл бұрын
That's untrue. Although the internet wasn't a resource, printed material was. Nintendo Power as an example published all the "tips and tricks" to beat Megaman and its sequels. But it doesn't mean that it still wasn't and isn't mechanically hard. Ryu is just really good at platformers and retrogames. Obviously this run through wasn't his first rodeo. Even though he was rusty he still more or less knew what to do. If I handed this controller to anyone who didn't have experience, they'd get crushed regardless of if I told them the order to complete the bosses in.
@jst254 жыл бұрын
@@JeremiahBostwick I had Mega Man as a child and Nintendo Power was little help. I was only able to beat it after months of trying. I never read the manual, either, so it took me weeks to learn you could switch your power (for a long time, I'd get to Wily 1 and would be stuck not knowing how to get through the giant wall). Then the yellow devil was a major sticking point. I got Mega Man 2 when it came out and had it finished within two days. Mega Man 3 for Christmas, by the end of the day I had not only beat it, but also cracked the password code so I could start the game with any combination of villains defeated and e-tanks in my inventory. Those games were significantly easier, but also it helped going in to know how a Mega Man game worked: that certain boss weapons would make other bosses easier, that the hardest parts of the game (flashing blocks over a pit) could be bypassed with a special item. Mega Man 1 was a harder game, but a big part of it was not knowing what to do. There was very little about Mega Man 1 in Nintendo Power and I can't remember another source at the time. I think you are discounting how much of the difficulty comes from not knowing how a Mega Man game works on your way in, and how that is totally different nowadays verses the pre-internet world. Nobody was buying strategy guides except for the biggest games. But you could easily go online and within 30 minutes learn the order to defeat bosses, the pause-spamming trick to take out the yellow devil (and other bosses), the use of the beam item to bypass some of the most dangerous platforming, and situational use of some boss powers to make other obstacles easier (the freeze ray on fire bars, for instance).

Also, the stages were brutal. I played a lot of MM as a kid and to this day, I dont remember doing a "no damage" run. You are pretty much guaranteed to take damage on the stages leading to the boss. Imo the japanese version of MM2 is harder than MM1: - MM1 is shorter - the collectable items respawn in MM1 - when using weaknesses, in MM1 only Fire Man can cost you major damage, in MM2 not only we've got Air Man but Quick man is also challenging without an E-tank - Wily Machine 1 is waaaaaay easier than Wily Machine 2 - Purple Hell (Wily Stage 4 in MM2) is an absolute nightmare I think most of the legend about the difficulty of the original game arose mostly from the Yellow Devil and some wonky physics but I'm aware that there are some other factors like no i-frames on instadeath spikes or no E-Tanks (although almost all the bosses contrary to the sequels do not necessarily demand them in order to be able to beat them).

"These are so impossible to dodge!" You literally just stay still and they miss you. Their bullets aim just above you and just below you, so as long as you have no vertical movement, they miss. If you want to try a really fun platformer that's pretty dang hard, check out Levelhead. It's like Mario Maker, but way more fun IMO. The editor is way more powerful, too. @joegoodman82134 жыл бұрын
@@enigma8301 It was just an example of the editing power. Ceave Gaming (one of Mario Maker's well known contraption creators) said Mario Maker 2 should learn from Levelhead. I could've said pinball or something instead, but Megaman was more relevant. Megaman Maker is cool, but it's difficulty and platforming are mostly dependent on the community. Levelhead has over 90 levels in it's campaign. As good as Ryukahr is at platformers, his deathcount will probably be well in the hundreds before beating it. There's also tower trials and levelcups to test your skill against other players. If Ryukahr hasn't checked out Megaman Maker either, he should do that as well. They do a good job adding more and more features and parts to it.

As someone who has never played a single Mega Man game in my life, I was so confused at the start why you couldn't work out which order to beat the bosses as it didn't make sense but after about 2 or 3 of them I figured out what you were talking about

Hey ryu, thanks for great content as always. If you haven’t played it, I think you would really enjoy Batman for the nes! Great controls, awesome music and quite challenging

Some suggestions for hard Retro games: NES: *Metal Storm* - Good challenging fun to beat. But after beating it you feel accomplished only until you find out there is a code for an Elite mode *Bionic Commando* - It is almost as good classic Capcom quality as Mega Man games, but it takes getting used to that you cannot jump in a platformer. Also the later levels are brutal as well as the final Boss. *Conquest of the Crystal Palace* - Awesome underrated Platformer ranking somewhere between Mega Man and Ninja Gaiden. (There is also a secret Boss) Master System (Sega Cards) : *My Hero* - An unforgiving Beat'em Up. Short but brutal. *Ghost House* - A Plattformer + Escape the Mansion kind of game. You have to kill vampires and other creatures of the night to get keys and advance to the next House. It's simple and repetative but strangely fun and challenging. Master System: *Alex Kidd in Miracle World* - Just as hard as it is classic xD GENESIS/Mega Drive: *Comix zone* - Unique beat'em up with a lot of satisfaction in killing every enemy because each is powerful enough to take you out. Great visuals and gameplay if you use the 6-Button controller.

watching this video makes me picture Ryu at like a local pizza place back in the 80's where they used to have arcade machines with these kind of games, but instead of leaving his top score, Ryu would just speed run the whole game while waiting for his order to be ready lmao

The only hard part in Megaman 1 is the floating platform section in Icemans stage, where you can get shot by the platform you're standing on.

A pretty cool game, I'm playing right now, is "The Final Fantasy Legend". Since it's an RPG, it requires some grinding and stuff, and it might be too long to just make an 45min. video to show it off. But it's definitely retro and quite the pioneer for a well appreciated franchise. If you don't know the game, you might want to inform yourself about how it's played. Just for the sake of creating good content, it also makes alot of fun to figure it out, but that might not be suitable for a video. I dunno tho. Great content, as always :)

I really liked that game back than, but the second episode (Megaman/Rockman II) is my all time favourite! Thank you for the nostalgia train!

I’m no good at these classic mega man games so it’s fun to watch someone who is skilled play them instead

I appreciated you doing the yellow boss fair and square! I don't recall this game having that much flicker though!

Holy crap! It took me a couple weeks of practice to play through this without using the pause-trick! Nice job!
