I won't lie, the commentary came off a little condescending towards the players here. The constant astonishment expressed by Hess and Ashley felt forced and contained a kind of patronizing subtext: "Wow, I can't believe these non-masters made somewhat decent moves instead of blundering constantly. Maybe they DO know how to play chess." GZA and RZA are smart dudes who genuinely love this game. Just give them props for their solid moves and point out their faults like you would normally. "Is this Magnus and Levon, or is this RZA and GZA?" Spare me.

You are 100 trillion % correct; this is the problem I have observe with these chess tournaments online and off; it's the condescending attitude between the players. As if this ancient board game was a bastion of prestige. It's not. It's a board game; and a board game that has been culturally appropriated by a certain segment of the world population. The game has been utilized as a source of income instead of the fun game it was meant to be. I maintain that a man or lady who plays chess for fun is a sign of a gentleman and a lady but playing for cash prizes in tournaments as a source of income...? That is a complete waste of one's life.
