@@acmelkaOne of possible uses. Mostly for show IMO. Was worn by wealthy samurai and drawn with use of retainers before the battle. As wealthy samurai mostly fought on horseback, probably was like a horseback spear - a long-range meelee weapon to strike your opponent while being out of their range. All IMO, of course.

@fracapolligummala3548 visually, yes, but the way they're used in a fight is very different. Look up odachi kata and compare those to kata for normal katana. You simply can't move a sword that's got almost 2 meters of blade the same way you can one that's under 40" overall. They aren't even the same proportions (odachi tsuka tend to be longer in proportion to the blade than a katana is)

Well, Odachi/Nodachi did exist in history, like this sword. And some of them were made so long that noone could reasonably wield them (one of them had a 13+ foot blade)

Most giant swords required a servant (the equivalent of a European squire) to hold onto the sheath while the warrior walked forward to draw the sword. And outside of combat, you can even have the boy carry the blade for you, save your own energy for the duel.

If you look closely she has to actually hold the sword by the blade to sheath it. It's meant to be drawn from a horse, not on foot, but the practice became popular as an art during peacetime.

It's not "hilariously long" it was the main samurai weapon back then which they used on horseback, the katana everyone thinks is their main weapons is actually their secondary. It's a perfectly normal sized sword for horseback combat.

Actually, Japanese use an Odachi back in Samurai era as a frontliner, to cut down cavalry's horses in a single swing. They typically carried it on their shoulder because of the weight, without its scabbard (saya).

Про длинну клинка, могу предположить что это нодати или одати (эксперт в холодном оружии и тем более японском), длинна клинка которого может достигать 150см, с рукояткой ещё +30-40, и получаем двухметровый меч. Как и у большинства оружия, у этого была своя специализация, это не концепт, а вполне рабочий инструмент. It's not your normal katana and I don't remember the name for this type of sword but I do remember it wasn't designed for normal sword fighting use. Anyway it's still a interesting sword to look at.

I remember some full of themself sword KZbinr (there’s plenty, so take your pick) saying that an Odachi could not ever be properly unsheathed by a single person, and that they required a servant to help before riding into battle, followed by a lengthy bit about how much better a spear was or a bow. The odachi was and is a real weapon that can and was used by the warrior elite. Makes for a crazy death when beheaded by a sword the length of a short spear.

Pretty sure the main point of that sword was as an anti cavalier tool and was primarily used to swipe at the legs of passing horses.

'properly' probably meant not having to remove the sheath/scabbard from your body. this is the Desert Eagle of its time: it's overly-large, impractical, and more an intimidation-piece than anything else.

Every time I see this video recommended on my feed I can’t help but watch. Each viewing I’m astonished by how well and with great ease that she draws her odachi. Her smile at the end always makes me chuckle a bit.
