The other problem is they take everything for granted. Years ago I visited ShangHai from Toronto by myself. Mom told me to treat my uncles and cousins out for dinner. In the restaurant, my uncles and cousins ordered a lot of foods ,,,, I meant A LOT OF FOODS!!!! The big round table was covered by dishes of foods, we ran out of room to put dishes! But the point is they didn't even eat, only 1 bite from each dish, they focused on DRINKING, DRINKING & MORE DRINKING. At the end of the night, when I paid the bill, I looked at the table, A LOT OF foods hadn't even been touched, A LOT OF left over ,,,, When I tried to pack them, they stopped me from doing so ,,,, like taking the left-over was an embarrassement. So Wasteful !!!

So true.. problems with Chinese culture - saving face... at all costs.
I don't think this is to show off how successful you are. The underlying reason is very touching. They bring so much home because they want their family members to have the best of what they miss. This makes the toil and sweat worth it. No matter how much money spent or how heavy the luggage is they are very happy to be able to get these 'goodies' for their family members to enjoy which they otherwise do have an opportunity to savour because they can't afford and not able to get them in their villages. It's very touching. It makes all the suffering a little bit sweeter.

from people i know, it is because of face. i think for the more modest ones, what you say is true but if they are giving away free money, what could they be asking for? it's not a charity event
