@@오징어덮밥-d2b Dirk is known to get decapitated frequently within Homestuck (I think at least 3 times), I combined the words Cappucino (A type of drink) and the word to Decapitate to create the pun of De-cappuccino and joke that it must be his favourite drink since he gets decapitated so much (Usually on purpose, at least 3 times)

@dothemusicything85418 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! To play every note in the original would be impossible for one person on piano, although this arrangement is not one of the harder arrangements I've done. I mean, it's not easy by any means, but around the middle in difficulty.
@thenameisalie68 жыл бұрын
This may be the hardest piece I tried so far. I hope that someday I will be able to play it myself, too! :D thank you so much for sharing! Keep up the good work and don't you ever stop playing cause you're soo great!
@dothemusicything85418 жыл бұрын
I'll keep doing these! And good luck with learning to play it. You might also try playing A Taste for Adventure - while that one's long (and was difficult to record for that reason), it's one of my less difficult arrangements technically (and if nothing else, you could learn the easier sections of it). Sburban Jungle is probably the easiest arrangement I've done, if you can find someone to play it with.

Normally I do memorize these, but because I was doing this one so quickly to have it out by 4/13, it was more important that it was done in time than that I took the time to have it fully in memory.

I was lucky; I made a skype group about HS just days before the forums went down. we talk about lots of other things, but HS is the standard topic of discussion. its pretty cool.
@Tasiezme8 жыл бұрын
I don't think that'll happen. If anything I think now that it's over, Homestuck's notoriety will over time begin to grow. It's a work of modern literature, a statement on our culture and generation, and that's really valuable to talk about even besides all of it's other forms of depth. Now that it's mostly "over", actual analysis work can begin, and people are already working on doing that. Stormingtheivory, KZbin's Tex Talks, whoever else springs up--It's as exciting a time as ever to care deeply about Homestuck. Just in a different way. The Bible never faded away on completion, and neither have any other popular/impactful works we have now--there's no reason to think Homestuck will. And yeah there's also all the other exciting work Homestuck diaspora creators are doing. Undertale, Neo-Kosmos, Hiveswap, the list continues to grow. Homestuck fandom isn't going anywhere, I'm pretty certain of that.

+Tia Silva Eh, they take time. That's really most of what there is to how I do them. Heir of Grief had to be done quickly to be ready for 4/13, but it still took hours of work. I'm usually protective of the songs that I really really love in anything, especially this one since it's my top favorite song of Homestuck. This song strikes a chord with me because of how it can go from gentle guitars to heavy electric then back to gentle piano and violins and I loved the song for being able to do that. You managed to replicate it all on one piano and keep the feel and sound of it. I love it so much.
@dothemusicything85418 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I do try very hard to make these recreate the effect of the originals (not just get the notes right) - which sometimes means that I won't arrange certain tracks that I like because I don't think I could do them justice on piano.

Its so weird to listen to this being so far removed from when I was a fan of homestuck but still understanding the feelings I had then, and honestly it reminds me how much of a push homestuck was for my creativity even if I like to laugh about how cringey it is now. I was insanely into the god tier system and knew the ins and outs of it, I created so many indepth characters, I planned a whole fan comic of me and my friends with our god tiers figured out and started drawing the first pages, I even wrote themes for everyone and their lands on musescore. That music was some of the first music I ever wrote, and now here I am pursuing a degree in music composition. I dont give this series enough credit for how much it changed me in the year and a half that I read it from 8th grade into my freshman year of highschool, but damn, who knew these kids and their crazy adventure would change me so much.

So maybe I shouldn’t be commenting but, welcome to 2019, 3 years after this was made and Homestuck officially ended, and a couple of days since the infamous Homestuck^2: Beyond Canon came out. With this comic and Hiveswap 2 making its way, I can safely say that 2019 nearby declares a new, although minuscule, wave of Homestucks. The time is now people, the space between the past and present closing ever so slowly, yet in the light of what has happened thus far, the world must prepare to have its breath taken away very, very soon. You have a feeling that 2020 is going to be a long year. Let me tell you about Homestuck.

+mastersx99 I definitely want to reread it as well. I'll wait until the epilogue is out so I can have full continuity when I reread, but it'll definitely be worth rereading. And I'll keep recommending it to people.

This one was actually recorded in a practice room, and those are fairly well sound-insulated.

on a random impulse i decided to revisit this cover and man do i not regret it. i havent thought about homestuck in a few years but i remember spending hours just... talking to friends about it, making art, enjoying this epic piece of media. heir of grief was one of the first non-classical pieces i tried to learn on the piano, inspired by this very cover! it was nowhere near as good, but, honestly, its probably what pushed me to really enjoy the piano and now im completing my arct. just, kudos to you man, and kudos to andrew hussie for making such an amazing webcomic

Well done! I've been trying to play this on my own (by ear) but now things will be a ton easier because of your sheet music. You earned a sub.

I've definitely considered it - I worry that it won't come off well on piano, or that, if it could, it would require a better pianist. But I'll keep looking at it on occasion; sometimes I figure something out.

Hey, great job at doing the musicy thing. You made me cry and not even funerals can do that.

Coming back to this 6 years later… I remember reading homestuck when I was in middle school and coming across this video and thinking wow some day I want to learn to play this. Now I’m going to college to get my bachelors in music and I think I’m finally ready to actually start getting this piece under my fingers.

i was playing the bass part to this while watching it and it was so satisfying to hear the fill at 3:50 be completely synchronized with my playing. this is an amazing cover. keep up the fine work.

There's so many emotions connected to this song. It's truly a masterpiece. It makes you feel how worn from the battle they are and yet how determined they are to win the fight... Their dreams, their memories. The stronger focus is on the humans (especially the four the comic started with) with each having their part in the song and their instrument in it. Though I feel like it's especially strong on John's side. First off the song is called "Heir of Grief". Who of the main characters is heir? John. Why grief? Well, he is the John from the pre-retcon/GAME OVER timeline after all. He remembers another outcome to the final battle. All of his friends had died before and he took all the blame for it. Though surely this battle was very emotional for him, him remembering everyone that died and fighting on for them....making this timeline have a better ending.

I'm 12, and trying to learn heir of grief on the piano. I'm having such a hard time, I get so frustrated every time I make a mistake, but then I crawl back to my piano and repeat the whole process over again. I think I'm getting somewhere??? I never read sheet music fast enough, so I'm doing everything by ear. =_= I'm halfway through the song tho. It's really beautiful :3

Nice! I admire your dedication. In the future if you want to continue with piano, I suggest doing exercises for the stuff you struggle with. It's boring and it sucks but it's worth it in the end.

+Melody the Anpanmaster (Seer of Time) Thanks!! Haha, I was able to make even more progress... And I feel so proud of myself :3 I can play about, 4 minutes of heir of grief... Nothing too fancy, I don't play the parts he plays in octaves (because my hands can't stretch that far and move that fast at the same time 😅) but I feel proud of myself :3 I guess hard work pays off
@bryano46138 жыл бұрын
Gonna pipe in to say you really ought to start doing exercises then to stretch your hands out. Many many many many songs have your hands playing octaves (and sometimes even farther stretches). Keep at it though ^u^

+MEME AND SPADES dont worry, im 13 and cant read a drop of sheet music! but with enough practice and patience and everything else everyone has already said, you'll be able to just play it with ease! ive been playing for 6 years now so y'know, just for advice, itll get boring quick

i know this video is going on five years old, but wow. this is seriously breathtaking (no pun intended). i play piano pretty casually, but this... this is what i aspire to. and i don't know if i'll ever be able to achieve it, but god, seeing you play like this makes me want to put in the work to try. i don't know if you'll see this comment -- if anyone will -- but, truly, you are such an incredible inspiration. i hope you're doing well, wherever you are, and that you're still gracing the world with your gorgeous arrangements. thank you!
