Hello, I'm Laotian American and my family migrated to the USA in 1979 when I was 10yrs old. I was told by my parents, my father is "Phue tai" and my mother is "Tai Deng". I'm pretty confused about Lao and Thai history too, but I gathered from this lecture; "Tai Puan" was mixed with Siam and others. "PUAN" is one of Laos ethnics. "TAI" means people or folk in Lao language, only the elites can called themselves Lao. Example, during 1400s AD, King or Jao Fa Samsenthai "3 hundred thousand tais" was named after the number of "people" who were in Lan Xang's Army. And during this period, Lanna, Esan, and Lan Xang were as one and powerful. Siam paid tribute to Lan Xang. By 1700s AD, Lan Xang broken up into vassals, Lanna, Luang Pra Bang, Vientiane or Esan, and Champasack. Siam had an opportunity to conquered Lanna and Lan Xang and conquered Khmer. Siam population exponentially increased to millions, and Siam was able fend off Burmese invaders. First reason why Siam changed to Thailand; By 1900S AD, Tai Lao people were outnumbered Siamese, as resulted, today's Thais adopted Khmer's royal protocols, writing, and culture, but accepted 90% of Tai Lao spoken language. Second reason why Siam changed to Thailand in 1939, it's for political stability in order to maintain Siam's Royal Dynasty, and by means of sharing power with Tai Lao people. Until today, Thailand doesn't recognize Lao language exists, but as Esan and Lanna language exists in Thailand. Tais speak Lao dialects!!
