I was stuck in limbo for 6 years after leaving high school. I had no skills other than gaming and had never an interest in books. Around 24 I became sick of my day to day life, selling clothes to people that didn't care about me and getting high to decompress. My life view was so narrow, and it was crushing me as much as it was protecting me from the Infinite. I decided to give reading another try. Fast-forward and now I'm a philosophy undergraduate at 28. Fear of failure, not being smart enough, being too old to learn complex ideas, they still exist but the harder I try, the smaller they become in comparison to where I was in limbo. I wish I had found something like this when I was in highschool. Your videos are great, I think they can help a lot of people to start asking more questions to themselves as well as society. Thanks for sharing these wonderful ideas.

I’m a 27 year old psychology student. Feel very similar to you although had a business degree I never used was almost more painful having that there which I never felt like I truly wanted to pursue but needed to use. I was lucky enough to find a course for psychology and am loving it, it just feels right…

Being totally real right now.. I was feeling really depressed this weekend and popped this video in and it really helped me. thanks. Philosophy can be so therapeutic this makes me happy to be engaged in life and keep learning and trying to get what I want out of life ... even if along the way some of the experiences are not so enjoyable

This seems like a good summary of the philosophy of Sartre. The religious and ethical seriousness of Kierkegaard I miss.

Beautifully expressed. Of course Kierkegaard believed it was only possible to live a truly authentic life within the context of a personal relationship with God. That's why Abraham is his all time hero and Jesus Christ is his all.

It just occurred to me that an existential crisis is a crisis of realizing that one has no autonomy or control, self determination

I liked the part about Kierkegaard impact. But the example about "that guy" who didn't follow his dreams and lived in a limbo is really disappointing. Yeah, he lived with his parents and worked menial job because he was afraid of people's opinions and failure and not because education costs tens on thousands of dollars that he does not have. What you call life in a limbo is simply a life of a poor person. Yeah he might have gone in debt for his dream like many people do...but you need be on the assumption that his preference about job at 18 years old won't change for at least 15 years. Cause what if it does? He pays for education with loan money, works for couple years and realizes he wants a job in completely different field. Now he has a job that he doesn't like anymore and a massive debt. My point is, if by choosing to recognize your freedom you mean having your dream job and doing what you want, then a lot of people can't afford to have such life. In examples like this and many others brave, taking risk behavior is a privilege of upper class, which btw Kierkegaard was a part of. Nothing against his philosophy though. Just the example is ...😒

Excellent point, and I completely agree. It really is an example of a situation where one needs to check their privilege. A similar situation is when you have a family to worry about.

I think the better laymen term for existentialism is that you are born without meaning, but you create your own.

"but do not therefore disdain life, respect every decent effort, every modest activity that humbly conceals itself, and above all have a little more respect for woman. Believe me, as surely as corruption comes from man, salvation comes from woman... for of a hundred men who go astray in the world, ninety-nine are saved by women, and one is saved by an immediate divine grace." - Kierkegaard

Why fear and trembling in the title? You didn't cover it at all.

Relevant choice of film clips, esp Shawshank. Hmmm ... I have to mull over the concept of determinism in light of this lecture. Not simple.
@simononeill9418 ай бұрын
I think this is more about existentialism in general, than Fear and Trembling. In fact, most of what is said here, while helpful, is not referenced in Fear and Trembling.

Que ideia e essa em disponibilizar um video sobre Kierkegaard sem legenda-lo em ingles ou espanhol? O koreano so e valido prs Coreia!

This video doesnt even tough on Kierkegaard, he relates existentialism exclusivly to fundamental christianity and how Abraham used freedom to act in faith. Pretty mid take on Kierkegaard and most video on K are pretty lame.
@beatakiziak730723 сағат бұрын
Talking about it is one thing, but why don't you actually do what Abraham did and feel in then in yourself. Maybe at that point you will see that it has nothing do with being lame... All the best in your own discovery.

I don't get why people are miserable. Life is suffering, just deal with it. (I'm not trying to be negative)
@jessevilla36963 жыл бұрын
I think for some the problem arises with ”just deal with it” not with the realization life is suffering.
