NTUNDA is an expression of Bantu origin present in the languages of several ethnic groups living in the current
region of Angola and Zambia. It means both time and space.
In several languages of Bantu origin, no expression corresponds to the idea of "time" as conceived in the West,
as an abstract reality. Time is experiential or subjective, that which is meaningful to the person or thing which
experiences it.
This principle orders various African and Afrodiasporic philosophical, religious, and cultural practices, and is
also important for the understanding and study of musical practices that are related to these African matrices.
Its pertinence is not restricted to the geographical limits of Africa, and its extensions are identifiable on the
other side of the Atlantic, in cultures that were constituted on the basis of the African contribution, as is the
case of Brazil and Cuba, for example.
This piece is inspired by the philosophical principle of NTUNDA to experiment new ways of organizing musical
time and share its experience.
NTUDA is dedicated to the members of the Ensemble Voix Nouvelles.
