Judging by the size of this ocean liner, compared to the little cargo ship on the right (seen at the beginning) it’s mind-boggling.

Forward funnel smoke deflector, stbd side: I wonder what is that object lying there? Looks like a small mast or platform just dumped in the most unlikely (and super dangerous) of places???

Same. I doubt this was placed up there by human hands. Some crane at some point, likely?

I’m pretty sure it’s the platform that belongs on the forward funnel which you can see in original pics. Chances are it was removed so Big U could get under the Walt Whitman bridge - that woulda been roughly 30 years ago, so if it hasn’t been blown off in the interim then I guess they’ve been lucky 30 years. Or more if you consider the whole ship!!

The SS United States is not now, nor has it ever been a "cruise" liner. She's a trans-Atlantic or ocean liner. A transport vehicle.
