Very few Minnesotans speak *exactly* like this, but almost all Minnesotans speak with *some* of the features of the accent which is portrayed here (as a JOKE, people, btw; Dave Ryan, does not actually talk like this). Most common is the Scandinavian-style "o". Even foreigners who learn English here will sometimes pick up the Minnesotan "o". And yes, most of us have an accent even if we think we don't (technically every person on earth has an accent). I was born and raised in Minneapolis where the accent is less noticeable, but when I went to college in Massachusetts people could often tell that I was Minnesotan. My accent got more extreme when I talked to my family on the phone -- my roommates would be rolling on the floor laughing!

For everyone saying "I'm from Minnesota and we don't sound like that", I got news for you. You do. Some Minnesotan accents are strong and some are barely noticeable but the regional accent is there and it's great. I like it. I went there once and heard it right away. I live in North Carolina and don't hear my own slightly southern accent but I know I have one because every time I go someplace different, other people mention it. So just because you can't hear your own unique speech, doesn't mean it doesn't exist...

I always thought the heavy Minnesota 'up north' accent was mostly because many people there grew up in homes where English has only been spoken for a generation or two. There's a town in northern Minnesota called "Finland", and a region called "Suomi Hills", because one part of Minnesota was settled mainly by Finlanders. "Well, the Vikings blew it again this year, dontcha know" definitely me every year and I've moved from Minnesota forever ago. I still drop the "ya know" way too much and if I'm angry or drunk my Minnesota Os are rampant, otherwise I conceal.

That's actually really accurate, most of of say a majority of it, not many people say it all, but it differs what parts you say. The vacation ones are soooo true though, my parents always think we go on vacations when we actually don't :(

Canadians don’t have this accent. In fact, not all Canadians speak English, most Quebecers speak French. It’s true that people in English speaking Canada call a bubbly beverage a pop.

It all depends on what part of the state you are from, generally the more North you go the worse the accent. Being born & raised in Minnesota for 20 years, I never noticed the accent until I moves out of the state, now every time I go to visit I definitely notice it. :) I blame the Canadians! Sad there was no mention of lutefisk though!
