Thank you, thank you, thank you. You have made me very happy. I have never cleaned my 38. Never. I haven’t fired it in over 10 years. I asked my son to show me how to clean it and he wouldn’t do it, so I have taken it on myself to find out how. You did a very good video and explanation on how to clean it and I will be following along with you when I do it for the 1st time.

Thank you for watching and sharing! I’m so glad that I was able to help! If you aren’t going to shoot it for a long time or store it, be sure to store it properly to prevent rust. And now that you’re about to clean it… maybe you can go shoot it at the range!

Good video. Good job of showing to clean the extractor star and rod, very important. I prefer a patch "jag" to a loop tip. No need to pull a dirty patch back through the bore. OR you can take the patch off in the cylinder window and remove the tip with the patch off. To protect the face of the recoil plate (where the firing pin is) use a brass core brush with a looped tip, rather than one where the twisted wire core has been cut. The rounded brass tip won't damage the firing pin bushing, even it it happens to bump into it.
@TheGunLove

Thank you for sharing this great feedback! I agree with the jag tip suggestion. I am trying different things and have found when I cleaned it again that it was easier! I need to re do this video and when I do, I will have better view shots and use a jag! Happy shooting!

A good tip for the wire brush. If you have an old sock lying around that's thick enough, you can tie it around the firing pin and backstrap to avoid worries of striking the firing pin with the brush.

Thank you for the feedback! Yes, all areas of the gun should be cleaned. I just didn't go into detail with this gun. You can open up the grip to get in there and its pretty simple, its just that with this gun, I didn't need too. I have another video cleaning the Ruger LCR where I do open up the grip. I should have that posted over the next few weeks.

@TheGunLove

Hi! Thank you for watching! Great question. I think that everyone has their own way of wanting to maintain their weapons and it is always down to a matter of personal choice. If you mean as far as cleaning it too much, I guess not because some people love a clean gun and some people don’t care if their gun is super clean, as long as it’s clean. I would think that what would be important is to not damage your weapon by using excessive abrasive (i.e. steel and copper bore brushes) scrubbing and what not. You don’t want to mess up your weapons by scratching them up. If you’re cleaning your revolver and have sprayed or used a lot of cleaner, make sure that you don’t leave excess on your gun. I’d go so far as to say that if you have saturated your revolver, you can even “shake off” the excess fluid prior to wiping it down. You would then also want to check it again the next morning and do the same because you absolutely don’t want your leaking any type of oil. And even if it’s not leaking, you don’t want all of that lube on your gun because it can cause your gun to collect excess carbon and residuals that you don’t want. I personally love a clean gun, and I like to try to bring my guns back to super clean if I can. But that’s JUST ME and MY personal preference! Thank you for asking. I hope that others will share their thoughts as well.

Thanks @@TheGunLove ! you are soooo on point, because the last thing I would want to do is damage my gun for the exact same reasons you shared above & since I'm such a newbie, awareness is key ... thanks again for sharing ... I prefer a clean gun too!

Hoppes will 100% destroy the finish of the aluminum receiver over time. Instead, use a lubricant based cleaner, such as a CLP.

Was this gun even dirty before you cleaned it? There was no carbon ring on the front of the cylinder. And always remove grips before cleaning. Solvents get under the grips and congeal. I’ve seen some nasty stuff under grips. And rubber grips should be removed once or twice a year even if the gun hasn’t been fired, and the frame wiped down. Rubber traps moisture and moisture causes rust, even in stainless steel.

If the "Hoppes #9" chemical smell is too much. Try "Hoppes Elite" solvent as an alternative. Hoppes #9 is a great cleaner. But it does stink. Just a strong chemical smell. Keep the windows open. Hoppes Elite don't stink. Hoppes #9 has ammonia so it removes lead fouling in the barrel. If you use copper plated FMJ bullets there will be no lead problem.
