I love to carry my S&W M&P 340 J-frame revolver. I hate to shoot it. I saw the S&W 432/632 UC and put myself on the waiting lists. I got one. I am disappointed. It will have to go back to S&W for repair.

I think you’re right about their relocation. I’ve seen way more stories about S&W quality issues since they moved (anecdotally, of course). Unless they relocated a significant number of their experienced workforce when they moved, this sort of thing is to be expected, unfortunately. I’m confident they’ll work it out, but in the meantime I think we’ll continue to see QC issues.

I too purchased a 432 which has been returned to the factory. I was experiencing light primer strikes and the handgun had some cosmetic issues. Within two weeks of return the factory service emailed and said the handgun could not be repaired, but would be replaced if that was agreeable. I agreed, and forwarded a copy of an FFL for return shipping. It has now been a little over a month and I have not received the firearm. I reached out to S&W and they said they are waiting on allocation, but did not know when that may occur. Hopefully the matter will eventually be resolved.

@@HollyrockFarm Just to let you know I had them replace my 432 with a 632. When it came in it had a ding on the cylinder that looked like it was dropped before assembly. I shot the gun on two separate occasions and it has functioned well. I probably have 300 rounds through it without any problems. I have opted to live with the ding on the cylinder since it works and is a carry gun. It will show enough wear in time. Smith obviously is not paying a lot of attention to detail. I hope you get your problems worked out with yours. I do like the handgun and the concept.

@@williamryan9195 I'm not sure if it was a spring issue or just the timing. The crane would move when the cylinder was supposed to be locked. I like the boot grips for my mission set for the j-frame. I let the mission drive my gear selection rather than my preferences driving matching my gear to the mission (unless it involves the Ruger LCR...they're great but too ugly for me). I bought a 632-UC and it does not have the same issues as my 432-UC. That reinforces my assessment that the 432-UC should never have left the factory in the condition I received it. I picked one up too. I sprayed the ejector rod with cleaner and then added oil. It was better but not ultimate quality. There were still grinding marks on the knurled end of the rod. No shooting issues though. I did take it apart and clean it. I was impressed with the fitment of the grips and plate/cover. Almost like it was edm cut. Same day I bought a PC shield plus. Trigger was garbage. SW said it could take 6w or more plus shipping to fix. I took it apart and cleared the grit and polished it. Much better but still disappointing

PS. because 22 magnum is not a healed bullet design like 22lr only polish the rear 2/3rds of the cylinder chambers so you do not enlarge the reduced diameter throat of the chamber that supports the bullet.. If you look down the chamber from the back of your 351 you will immediately know what I'm referring to..

Smith & Wesson's quality control is down the tubes. I have bought 4 S & W pistols and 2 revolvers in the past 4 years and have had issues with 3 of the pistols out of the box and they were all Performance Center pistols. One had to go back to S & W, had to get a rear sight replaced which I thought S & W would have me send the slide back and they would replace the sight, but they mailed me the sight and I had to pay a gunsmith to install it. The 3rd pistol was missing a back strap and it took 3 weeks to get it. For the revolvers, I bought 2 of the 432 UC because they came in at the same time. Other than the sights, I'm not very happy with either of them. The enhanced trigger is not. My J frame 38 has a better trigger and like your revolver, there is nothing smooth on it. I'm hoping they will smooth out after firing some ammo through them. Should have been great out of box!!

I bet the great resignation and the fact revolvers represent such a small portion of their sales means they're not willing or able to invest enough to get QC where it needs to be. Those polymer frame semi-autos are a lot more popular these days and can get away with a lot more slop than a revolver.

The whole reason I went with the brand originally was their reputation, and now I'm not sure.

Conversely, several years ago I bought a brand new 340 like yours and the cylinder actually fell off the frame when I opened it. The cylinder stop was apparently not machined correctly. I just typed the letter to include in the box when I send it back. This is my first negative issue with a S&W. If you make enough of them, your bound to have a bad copy make it out the door. I also hope this is an isolated issue. I saw a video review from a guy with the silver model that also complained of the trigger freezing. All the markings on the gun except for the S&W trademark on the left side of the frame are rough. They are using a different method than on my other earlier S&W models. It is the kind of engraving that grabs cotton from a swab. Functionally, it is irrelevant. It degrades the finished feel of the gun and is likely cheaper. It makes me wonder if they're cutting corners...

I purchased a 43C about a year ago and had to send it back. I paid almost $800 for it and they “repaired” the yoke, cut the forcing cone, and replaced the main spring. That’s a lot of work for a brand new gun. The problems they’ve been having seem to be with their revolvers. I don’t know if it’s new equipment or lack of qualified personnel, but they really need to get their act together.

I did another much longer video after I got the 432-UC back...now my 432-UC and 632-UC are both back at S&W. It is disappointing. They cannot make those wheel guns like the polymer M&P pistols. Those wheel guns need more QC.

It seems like their non-magnum j-frames have a very poor quality control. I bought Model 442 back in 2020. I knew of the quality control issues so I asked the gun store to show me four identical revolvers. Three of the four had cylinder issues just like you are describing. So I bought the best of the four examples, only to discover a new issue - that during rapid fire a cylinder would occasionally fail to rotate. 🙁 (I got it on slow motion video, so it’s NOT operator induced) After the gun spent over a month at S&W, it came back, working fine, but this time it had a bent ejection rod. 🤦‍♂️ It’s been working fine ever since, so the ejection rod is only a cosmetic issue, but what the hell, Smith & Wesson?!

There was resistance closing it because it was not fit correctly. Something had to be out of spec. I could feel front and back movement in the crane and cylinder when the cylinder was locked in the firing position. I tried to work it in before making the video and complaining. It was immediately apparent there was something wrong with the gun before I ever started the Form 4473. I would not have continued with the sale if I did not buy the gun from GB. A little grease was not going to correct the issues. I had already cleaned it with Clenzoil CLP. I sent my 432-UC back to S&W in the beginning of May 2024. I picked up my 642UC last week and had only 1 range trip thus far. Thankfully mine has no issues, including any of those you've pointed out. Sorry you got a bad one. I will say that the "hard to close" cylinder thing isn't actually a thing. It's due to a heavier spring in the rear lockup pin running through the extractor star. Not a bad thing, as it'll help keep the cylinder locked in place. If the cylinder face is scraping on the forcing cone while opening/closing, that's a different matter, but you should be able to tell right off the bat if that's what's going on. All of the other issues suck and need to be fixed by S&W.

The problem with buying anything on GunBroker is that you're purchasing something that has already been owned by at least one person, and you have NO way to know how many others before you. As far as you know, someone bought a perfectly good firearm, took it apart for whatever reason, royally screwed it up, and sold it at a pawn shop. The person you bought it from could have bought it from the pawn shop hoping to make a quick buck, and you get screwed because you've already paid for something that you couldn't even check out. I find it very difficult to believe that the revolver left S&W in that condition.

I own 2 Smith revolvers, and only one of them is new enough to be subject to modern QC issues. It's a Model 63 that I picked up a couple of years ago. It has given me no trouble, and I have no complaints with the fit and finish. I kind of wish it didn't have the frame lock, but that's not a QC issue, and it's easy enough to ignore when plinking at the range. I like the Buffalo Bore item 19i. It has consistently expanded and gone around 16" in organic ballistics gel and clear ballistics gel through both bare and heavy clothing. I used this loading exclusively when I carried my MP340 on duty. They are loaded more like a "38 +P++" than a full .357 Magnum load. If trying to run something less "spicy", the Underwood 38 Special rounds, either standard pressure or +P, come in at 12-13" of penetration in clear ballistics gel with both heavy clothing or bare gel. I use those depending on availability. I've only got 5 of the Buffalo Bore cartridges left. I need to order more. They're very expensive.

I don’t know much. Looking to purchase. Was sold on this, but sure glad I found your review! Looking for more than a 22 but less than a 38, that’s all I know, with easy trigger pull and as less kick as I can. Any recommendations?
@HollyrockFarm
@HollyrockFarm Ай бұрын
The .32/.327 Mag revolvers likely well suite your desire for more than a .22 but less than a .38. If you can find a S&W Ultimate Carry out in the wild and have the opportunity to inspect it before you buy it, it may fit the bill. If you need the lightweight revolver, the Ruger LCR is a great place to look. Ruger offers it in .327 Federal Magnum. It will shoot .327 Fed Mag, .32 H&R Mag, and .32 S&W Long. The Ruger LCR should have a great trigger out of the box. If it does not, it is wrong and should be sent back to Ruger for repair. I would have bought one long ago but I think they're ugly. That is the only reason I have the S&W instead of the Ruger LCR. Some people complain about the grips being too big and lacking a good front sight. Those can both be changed...and then the price would about match the S&W UC revolvers. The Ruger SP101 and Taurus 327 are both available in .327 Fed Mag (will chamber cartridges mentioned above) but they are a lot heavier with their steel frames and cylinders. The heavier guns will use some of their weight to mitigate recoil. The downside is they're less pleasant to carry. Sellier & Bellot makes a good flat point lead bullet for the .32 S&W Long that will give about 13 inches of penetration in gel through heavy clothing and has pleasant recoil. It would be a round that could double for defense and practice at about $0.60 per shot if you were trying to keep it simple. If you have more questions, I'm happy to help! If I get too technical, I have to apologize, I was a cop that spend a lot of years where the details were very important.

@@HollyrockFarm Thank you for your detailed response. Sounds like I’m on the right track as I started out looking for the Ruger LCR 327 but my local store said I would have to order online and pay transfer fees. The S&W 32 looked perfect but online it was listed at nearly $1200. Since you brought up its issues, sounds like I’m back to the Ruger again. I appreciate your help and your service in the PD. Thanks for your time!

The trigger freezes. There is no point running accuracy tests from a gun with a trigger that freezes unless you're using a mechanical vice like a Ramsom Rest to eliminate human input. I don't have a Ransom Rest so that is not possible. The cylinder has excessive play. If there is excessive movement in the cylinder while it is locked in the firing position it can negatively effect the group size. I could feel the crane moving while the cylinder was locked in the firing position. How did my 432-UC shoot? Poorly. It did not function well and that led to an overall poor shooting and accuracy experience. I have no interest in beating S&W up on accuracy when the accuracy results would be from a malfunctioning gun. My S&W 432-UC has been with Smith & Wesson since the beginning of May. Hopefully when it comes back it is good to go. I bought a 632-UC because I got impatient waiting on the 432-UC to come home. It seems to work better. I have not gotten around to making a video about it but it is in the works. If you're disappointed, leave constructive criticism. Ask questions that I can answer in the comments or with future content. Merely stating you're disappointed accomplishes nothing. I'm working to get better at this so I welcome constructive criticism.

Everybody lets out a turd once in awhile. I had to send back an mr73 because of finish issues and that gun cost over $5,000. That being said I'd like to make the point that these snub nose revolvers are great little guns but they should be purely back up guns and never relied upon as a main weapon. I have nothing against them. I have like five snubbies. The problem is obviously the power and capacity. I have seen at least a dozen innocent people lose a firefight they only had a j frame. They got mowed down and it was ugly. Every time.

Gunfights are in the open division… I usually carry my P365, CZ P-10C, or CZ Custom A-01C, all with optics and a spare mag. Sometimes I roll with a j-frame…sometimes up to a PDW, trauma kit, and set of cuffs…depends on my threat assessment and what my back will tolerate. Sometimes my back is not going to tolerate something AIWB…enter the j-frame until I’m done with the muscle relaxers. Some say I have a screw loose…j-frame pocket carry in athletic shorts around the house… I just bought a 632-UC to deal with my separation anxiety from the 432-UC. Hopefully it does not have any of the same issues!

My brother-in-law was looking for a small revolver for farm carry. I pointed him to the Ruger LCR. I love my MP340 and it has an action job from the S&W Performance Center. A new out of the box LCR has a better trigger than my Performance Center tuned MP340. The LCR is cheaper and has a nicer trigger. I think the LCR a better choice and is ugly...I stayed with S&W. My issue with Taurus is...I don't have one. I've never had a bad experience with a Taurus. I just prefer the holster availability and classic lines of the S&W.
