As a gunsmith, I’ve had a lot of XDs come in the shop for light primer strikes. Every single one has been due to excessive grease where the striker rides in the slide. This is NOT a place that should ever have grease due to this very issue. There should be nothing more than a light coat of oil to prevent corrosion. None have been due to anything else but the grease issue. I clean the grease out and replace with a LIGHT coat of oil and problem solved. Then they run like champs. If you read the literature that comes with the XDs, it does state to disassemble and remove packing grease before using but that is beyond some people’s skill level as it is a bit more than a simple field strip. I personally love XDs and have some with thousands of rounds with no hiccups. Just thought I’d share this knowledge hoping to help someone. M&Ps on the other hand…more broken parts than I could even begin to explain. Again, as a gunsmith, I am NOT a fan of S&W products at all. Even the older revolvers that everybody love so much always bulge cylinders or break the top strap on the frame. Not good products…old or new.

Thank you for the review video. I found it informative, useful. I purchased my M&P 2.0 10mm 4.6" just after Christmas. Since January, I've put nearly 500 rounds through it. I'm hoping I have one of the reliable ones as I have not had one failure (yet). I'm using 180 grain and 200 grain Blazer FMJ, Sellier & Bellot FMJ, and Underwood JHP in both grain weights. I also have some flat nosed hardcast I haven't tried yet. We've received quite a bit more snow and drifting since January, so haven't been out to shoot since. After reading and viewing recent reviews (just this weekend), I feel I need to get back out and put some pressure on the 10 before relying on it as a carry gun. Since becoming aware of the reviews, as a pre-emptive measure I've ordered after market guide rod/spring assemblies in 20lb, 22lb, and 24lb weights, as well as extra heavy-duty magazine springs. If I eventually find that I, too, am having issues, I hope to be prepared with parts. I really do like all my M&P pistols (after installing Apex Triggers) and am hoping to use the 10 as my main "woods gun" instead of the 44 Magnum. I do like my .44's (Ruger Redhawk and Taurus M44), but there is a video of an Alaskan guide comparing his .44 with a borrowed 10mm Glock. The test was timed at how many rounds he could get on target against a "bear" in three seconds (beep, draw, then three second beep). Then the test was repeated. He could get double the rounds on target and more accurately with the 10. Even he was surprised because that was using a borrowed pistol against his own familiar Redhawk. Yes, we all know the .44 is more powerful, but the 10 is no slouch and with more rounds on target (???). It was that Alaskan guide video that led me to the M&P 10mm purchase.

In case anyone wanted to know, the grit in the m&p trigger *came from the striker safety plunger being square instead of having a smooth radius. ** This applied to the gen 1 m&p's. I haven't gotten into a 2.0 yet, I plan on getting a 4.6in very soon. I suspect that's still the culprit. Apex makes a replacement plunger, cheap too, and it dramatically improves the trigger pull!!! Hope this helps, it will be one of the very first things I'll look for when I get my hands on one

Exactly correct! Folks should disassemble and use fine/super fine grits of wet dry sandpaper to enhance the dome of the plunger and then polish to mirror finish. Makes a difference.

I have both pistols and can report that the Springfield has been flawless with all ammo ( including hot reloads). The M&P had been flawless for about 300 rounds but then it started dropping it’s magazine while firing. I sent the pistol back to S&W and they reported that they could not replicate the problem, so they made no repairs. They did send two new replacement magazines and these seem to be working ok, no dropped mags yet but time will tell.

Very good, methodical video. Nothing I say is meant to diminish that. I was almost humored that I knew exactly how it was going to go for M&P10. I can't speak for XD. It so happens that loading only 5 in a mag will mask the biggest problem with M&P 10mm - the fact that the magazine is poorly designed, allowing those heavy hardcasts 200/220gr bullets to push out the mag catch as they pass the mag catch window - precisely between the 5th and 6th round of the stack. That's why Buffalo Bore ran fine when you loaded just 5, and choked with a full mag. This is on the gun, not on the tester, however one lesson that I learned - is to test EXACTLY as you'll carry, unless it's purely a range toy. This specific issue will either cause a full mag eject, aka "mag drop", or, if partial, then will induce a stoppage as seen in the video - the partially dislodged mag messes up the feeding angle. However, the magazine springs are definitely also an issue and will compress and get weaker after only a few loadings. Springer Precision makes great extra power springs for it, from heavier gauge wire. Likewise, the RSA is seriously underpowered for 10mm, so it will wear out the frame sooner than necessary. I run a 24lb. captured RSA from Galloway with a red dot and a 26lb. uncaptured rod/spring from Springer Precision with iron sights. They both also cycle the weak FMJ's just fine. For hypothetical bear defense I've been testing loading 10 Xtreme Penetrators topped with 5 heavy hardcasts, plus 1 in the pipe, and it runs 100% of the time. There's nothing wrong with M&P10 in terms of handling spicy loads, only the badly designed mag and inadequate springs. A shame, too. Hunting buddy of mine has a compact version of the XD and his runs great with all types of rounds. Thank you for the thorough testing. Unfortunately the need to spend hundreds of rounds just to achieve Quality Assurance means the manufacturer has outsourced QA to us, effectively tacking a few hundred dollars onto the initial cost, not to mention the necessary spring upgrades.

I just moved to Alaska and am looking for my first 10mm bear defense semi-auto to chest carry. I already have a Marlin 45-70 Trapper (which is truly fantastic!) but, of course, it's not practical to carry when fly fishing. All the gun stores and ppl I talk to here in Fairbanks all say exactly what you said about the M&P10. I may very well go with a 1911 10mm and not worry about the ammo capacity. For my 10mm usage needs here in Ak, I'm only going to be able to squeeze off two rounds if I'm lucky anyway. An unexpecting ambushing grizzly from the thick bush traveling at 35mph only gives ya a couple seconds.
@languagesource3553 ай бұрын
@@JosephTMeiroseIV yes, it's a weird situation - 10mm is a great round, but the available semi-auto platforms for it all seem to have their issues, including Glock and at least some 1911's - from what I've read. M&P10 seems to have it worse, but now that the issues have been figured out it seems like a fairly easy thing for those who like tinkering. I am starting to trust mine and will keep testing it as I practice with it. I do not go into grizz country, yet. I hope to visit some day, but I wouldn't be seeking out bears. I think the huge advantage of a semi-auto platform is that you might just be able to squeeze off more than from a revolver. I lover magnum revolvers, but I don't shoot them as well as the M&P. P.S. Love the 45-70, especially the trapper! Hope to own one some day. Currently have a Henry side gate, set up for deer. But I've fired a few Underwood spicy loads.
@JosephTMeiroseIV3 ай бұрын
@@languagesource355 Henry is a great name! I bet urs is super fun and perfect for deer. I def don't trust my life with my firearm tinkering ability, that's for sure! Hence why I am steering clear of anything requiring "some work" to hopefully work ok. It's a real shame SW can't/won't fix the issue themselves. Then again, maybe the users of full hot load mags is small, though it seems most everyone I know here in Ak does. On the range a misfire/jam is inconvenient, where I live it can cost a life. While I also don't seek out bears, I live where they do. I want to avoid them if at all possible. I trained on 1911 45 ACP and feel most comfortable w that platform. Unless someone is a competition revolver shooter I'd say the vast majority of the "rest of us" would have more luck getting a follow up shot w a semi auto v a bear cannon revolver. When I see someone strutting around w/ a big 2ft long barrel revolver strapped on their chest I say to myself, "I hope they have a world class quick draw and get that perfect single shot placement...with no advance warning and literally two seconds to do it."
@languagesource3553 ай бұрын
@@JosephTMeiroseIV FWIW by "tinkering" I did not mean modifying - I have not done anything with tools to my M&P. Just swapped springs, which is the same skill as field stripping to clean. And experiment with hybrid loading mags - 10 Underwood's Xtreme Penetrators, topped with 5 Underwood heavy hardcasts. That's the extent of what I've done. I am not trusting it yet, but with all these "mods" it's been 100%, I just need to keep going with it.

I have carried a Glock 20 since 1993. I would like to see the Glock 20 brought into this testing competition. Over the years I found it extremely reliable. What I can say with regards to the all steel P220 Legion is, its super accuracy. I shot a 5 shot group from 50 yards, standing slow fire which measured 2.25! Now all we need is your "Ransom Rest" to test. I'Il bet at 25 yards it will print a 1" group or less! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family and keep up the excellent videos!

Late to the party on this vid. But I did fully enjoy it. You are one of the few I've watched, to take the time to correctly process a miss fire, keeping a safe direction and waiting for a "cook off" before further manipulation. Thumbs up ! I have that same model XDM. Tested it for accuracy / reliability, before I rely on it in big game / griz / nare-do-well territories. Not one hick up in 500 mixed rounds. The miss fires did alert me, but not overly so. As one commenter mentioned, sometimes the mfg preservative coatings can be an issue. I've heard some of the boutique companies may use pretty hard primers too. (interestingly the M&P set them off). Also, as happened to me many years ago with a brand new Ruger .45 acp (P-90 Special Edition), I was getting an inordinate amount of light strikes / miss fires. I sent it back and they fixed the problem. It can happen, and be remedied by the mfg. (Still disappointing when you spend money on "quality" and it glitches like that). You sir, show the reason why we put 500 rounds through our new firearms evaluating each shot, to discover these issues before a life or death encounter, and address it to satisfaction.....then retest again. I'll check the other vids / channel you referenced. Thank You ! Be safe! Thank you for your service !

Now it FTF 2-3 times per magazine. This is with Magtech 180 FMJ and Winchester 180gr Defender… both run like a sewing machine through my XTEN that has over 4K flawless rds through it. The 2.0 Compact is a nice AIWB size EDC 10mm. After it’s trip back to S&W, I had my gunsmith install an Apex trigger set to 4.6 lbs. That is an amazing upgrade over the OEM trigger that has too much take-up to the wall! Also, I purchased a set of stnd height tritium sights for the compact while on the phone w the S&W gunsmith. For an EDC pistol, the sights are exceptional. Now, to get the gun running… yes, I have and tried a Galloway Precision 22lb RSA. I have 16 OEM mags, and they work well in my 2.0 Competitor 10mm…

Thank for the video Brother! Great testing. The Hard Cast BB rounds with the Wide Flat Nose can get caught up in some guns. The recoil of these can shift the next round in the mag adding to the failure to feed. Light primer strikes can be debris, primer cup shaved into the striker / firing pin opening or lube slowing the striker speed as it moves forward to hit the primer. Ammo choices did cover a good range of 10mm potential for the testing! Take care and have a great new year!

I shoot Glocks mainly, and have had great experiences with the Glock 20 in 10mm. But, I also have had others. I like the M&P series a lot, and I have owned and shot the XD's. I sold the XDs first, because of something he ran into - the light primer strikes. Now, I NEVER had a misfire, I want to say that - BUT, the strikers always felt anemic, and I was always worried about a failure like he experienced. It was something in the design; the trigger always felt like it was breaking just as it was about to hit the frame, which was weird, on both of the XDs, and the strikers felt and sounded sluggish as it fired. I cleaned the striker assemblies, replaced it complete in one, and sent one back to SA just to have it checked over. Again, I never had a failure, but I didn't trust them, either. And he talked about the gritty trigger in the M&P - yep. I have had a mixed bag. One of mine had a fantastic trigger out of the box, and the other I had needed some TLC to smooth it out. It probably would have broken in, but who can afford 1000 rounds just to smooth it out these days? Lol

In my gunsmith group there's one full time smith who's reported getting in Glock 10mm for repair. The metal inserts for the slide/rail are getting loose in the molding. This makes sense that the stress is trying to shove the inserts around and eventually they'll start to wiggle. How many rounds and what loads, etc etc?? No idea. He's the only smith that's seen the problem often enough to comment about it. Maybe there's a lot of Glock 10mm in his area. So just something to keep in mind.

The Smith is also available with a longer barrel. I've not had any malfunctions with mine after several 100 rounds. But only 20-25 of that was the heavy Buffalo Bore. I found that the ergonomics of the S&W felt better for me. Like you, I'd prefer a metal lower. But, there are no signs of wear on mine yet. Also, I am very sensitive to poor triggers (such as on the S&W Bodyguard 380), but the one in my MP2.0 10mm is quite good. Not a Smith fanboy. None of my wheelguns are smith. I trust the 44 more than a 10mm, but there are some places where the much lighter semi is a better choice (for example, if there are no brown bears in the area). My load out is typically the 180grain or above. It most certainly over-penetrates for defense vs 2-legged creeps, but I prefer a 45 acp against that; the heavy 10mm is for dangerous forest dwellers.

Great review! Basically the 2 I’m between. Leaning towards the xdm elite because of negative views I’ve watched/read concerning hp loads in the m&p. Looking to get 10mm for woods, hikes etc so hp is a must. I LOVE the grip on the m&p by FAR, but stated purpose is an absolute must. I’ve seen $100 rebates for the m&p putting it at $489. That would leave some room to get 20#-24# recoil spring and stronger mag springs too. Any input would be appreciated. Most importantly, thank you for your service!! 👍

I actually did not buy the M&P 10mm 2.0 due to the trigger. The XDM OSP Elite in 10mm is fantastic imo and the trigger is outstanding.

That Buffalo Bore 220 Hard cast is what I would carry in bear country if packing a 10mm for defense.

I went with the m&p and i agree im not a fan of the trigger but i also haven't shot the springfield yet so idk whats really best for me but other than the trigger the m&p is phenomenal ive put maybe 1000 rounds through it and haven't had a malfunction yet but i haven't gotten my hands on some super spicey rounda yet

@@rollingolden1013 if you have any issues with it feeding in the hood of the barrel, go to Galloway precision and order a heavier recoil spring, it's what I've had to do

I carried the Winchester 175 grain STHP it's a full power 10mm. I used a Glock 20 in 10mm and have had several 1911 10s still carry a Kimber Camp Guard 1911 10mm and a flat earth XDM 4.5 10MM 15 SHOT. I favor the Springfield over the Glock. Yes sir a gel test would be very intetesting.

I was really getting into this video. But after the magdump I am glad I didn't purchase either of these firearms❗I am very surprised, about the lite primer strikes 😲‼️ Out of all the ammunition, that was shot in this video. The buffalo bore 180 gr Phoenix ammo was the most impressive 💯

I hear talk of G20s having issues, but having Gen 2 multiple Gen 3s and now a Gen5, I have not had any issues, and I am talking about running stout hand loads through them for more than ten years (155xtp Blue 🔵 @1550) granted that's using a 22# or heavier recoil spring, but none the less still no issues. I've not kept track of the roud count but a 200-300 round range outing isn't unusual for me. I also have both of the current XDMs and a couple of 10mm 1911s, I've had no issues with the XDMs other than they are not sprung heavy enough for the stouter loads.The 10mm 1911s of which I have owned a Rock Island, Springfield and Ruger. All had issues at first before tuning. I keep going back to G20 Gen 3 for ease of tuning and reliability. G20 Gen 4 is a no go for me. I like the grip of the M&P but can't stand the triggers, I have yet to handle one that doesn't feel like five miles of rough gravel roads. The XTen is an eh at best for me, known magazine issues not withstanding. I'm very happy with my G20gen5. Eventually I wouldn't mind giving the FN510 a try.

I just got a M&P 2.0 4.6”. I’ve only put 9 rounds through it. 5 of which where Buffalo Bore. The fifth round nosed up in the camber and didn’t feed. I just got some more ammo for it and reloaded some to tryout.
@MrHazz0 Жыл бұрын
Glock 20 springs will fit, and Wolff springs fit the 4.6, get a 22lb spring or 24. The stock spring is for "off the shelf" 10mm which is basically .40 S&W. Full House loads will need more spring as the slide out paces the mag on hot loads. I know this because of the way you described your FTF. The other way to counter this without changing parts unironically is being a worse shooter and allowing more recoil and flip to slow down the slide haha! I wonder if S&W Factored that in as well lol!
@rockie3072 жыл бұрын
When testing you should run a full mag. I say this because my two glock 20s jams usually mid mag with full power loads. Mag tension is weakest mid mag allowing the slide to cycle faster then the mag can reliably feed the next round. My xdme runs the same ammo perfectly but you can feel the mag tension is much stronger.

I'd rather have a subpar trigger that goes bang every time, than a crisp trigger that might not. Edit: the speed and pressures of 10mm used to be standard and pretty hot, until the FedBoIs got involved and their noodly arms couldn't handle the Centimeter recoil, then the 10mm fbi (reduced) load was developed, later the 357sig (best girl) was developed and 40sw came around. Now some range 10mm is loaded to hot 40sw power, instead of gun powder they put disappointment in the casings. Good video I'm looking at the M&P10 Performance Center for Christmas ;)

@@Dayattherange I have used an aftermarket Lonewolf barrel for Hard Cast Lead in my G20 for issues of bullets tumbling in factory Glock barrels. Hickok45 did a video on it. I’m completely satisfied with the Glock pistols. I owned a S&W 1006 that I let go because it sat in my safe since the Glock was just more comfortable to carry and shoot.

I own both of these 10mm guns as well as a Glock 29 & a Kimber 5" 1911. They all had break in malfunctions. The 3 polymer guns all function perfectly now with everything I feed them, including the Buffalo Bore. The stainless Kimber is still struggling with failure to feed, failure to eject and light strikes. Did I get a lemon? IDK, but all 3 polymers function fine.
