Going to the largest street carnival in the world is a guarantee of getting to know maracatu. In the first episode of "Sounds Good: a rhythmic history of Pernambuco", we'll investigate the historical journey of that cultural expression, with a focus on maracatu nação (or maracatu de baque virado), intangible heritage of Brazil since 2014.
There are infinite possible readings for historical phenomena like maracatu. What will be presented here is just the perspective of who produces this material. After months immersed between batuques and loas (types of verses sung by maracatuzeiros), my interpretation, based on the analyzed documments, is that maracatu ends up merging with the history of the Black population in Pernambuco. It shows us diverse adaptation tools and strategies to a hostile environment: the Brazilian society, hierarchically white and violent.
And of course, with this video, we haven't exhausted all there is to talk about maracatus. We didn't go into, for example, the universe of maracatu rural (or maracatu de baque solto), which deserves an individual episode soon, and for this reason, it wasn't mentioned here. There are yet possible insights on religiosity or the crisis during the covid-19 pandemic; or the coronations of kings and queens of congo or the relation to Africanity; anyway, there are infinite themes that move us to continue the research on this maracatu that is cool and part of the rhythmic history of Pernambuco.
