This has touched me so much! I have always been that Black girl that loved guitar, indie/alt music and never really felt recognized by the genre so much so I kinda made myself write rnb music cuz that’s all i could see myself as. Three years after releasing that song I am realizing I need to embrace what I personally identify with instead of pigeonholing myself into the box other people might put me in. Its been liberating 😭 love you girls from across the pond!!

I literally just wrote a comment about this. That’s sad that black girls feel the need to squeeze into a predetermined box in order to not get judged

I've just seen a cut from a conversation that Leigh Anne ( from little mix) had in a podcast. In this section they were talking about race and her experience as a pop artist. Good conversation. So I went to the comments below... Although I'm not shocked it gets me every time how people are so easy to discredit black artists ( or black people in general) in their experiences. So it's nice to see conversations like this one here.

I love the black British pop and rock girlies. As an American, I feel like there aren’t enough American black girls doing this either because there aren’t enough of us, or some girls are afraid. I feel like in America if you’re not listening to Beyoncé or Kendrick Lamar, you’re seen as weird. No shade to them cause you can do both. But I feel like black Americans always have to talk about their favorite non-hip hop or R&B artists in a joking way in order to not seem weird like, “Hayley Williams is one of the cool white artists because Paramore was my childhood.” I love how you girls are making the music you want to make because that’s what you want to make. I am trying to do the same with my music because that’s all I know. Like a lot of American black girls, I grew up listening to Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato, and since those are the people I grew up listening to, I’m not gonna make music that sounds like Ashanti just because I’m black. I think as more people get comfortable showing who they truly are, this will become more common. But I’m not sure how long it will take to become the norm.

I am a fan of both of these artists. They have released great music recently. I hope they keep up the great quality in their music! "The Hills" is #6 on my current chart of nearly 150 songs. My chart is for the Best recordings I heard in 2024. Cat Burns has a few hits as well. I currently also love Rachel's live performance of "All I Ever Asked of You" at Koko. Rachel is amazing live! She has the talent to have a great career. Cat does as well. I have not seen Cat perform live.
