What an absolute joy it must be to have the freedom and the finances it takes to do something like this. A 3 car garage and HUGE train room?? My dad would've absolutely loved this. He enjoyed all aspects of modelrailroading: building benchwork, the electrical, scenery... You name it, he would've just loved it.

I can only dream of having a railway room like yours especially as mine is in N Gauge, wow think what I could do then. I have watched the last three videos back to front, no its not because I am English, I just saw the last one advertised on here and watched it then the next, then I thought where is this huge room and watched your lovely garage being built. Loved the way you went about building your baseboards etc. As you can imagine over here we dont have the room or the salaries to build something like that so mine is up in the loft where I have to crawl all about on hands and knees LOL. Our main problem is that everything is just so bloody expensive over here and I am on a fairly good wage. Looking forward to the build, thanks for sharing. Regards Chris

From the trees it looks like it took a year to build. I appreciate that you put in full size garage doors and put pillars in between so you're not banging doors. Around here garages are so small you bang doors on Civics. ( Ontario Canada ). Nice solid structure holding it square. I like the cantilever giving more space upstairs and helping to keep the foundation dry. PS I'm an engineer

Would going higher have broken the bank? Because of the size of the room, it feels like the ceiling is coming down on on you. How long did the entire build last? It looks like the team was very efficient. (A timelapse could be misleading, though.)
@rcgrabbag3 жыл бұрын
The ceiling is slightly over 8ft from the floor so that’s plenty of space. Most of the structure was done in about two months and then slowed down because of winter. Total time ended up being around 6 months.
@hntrains23 жыл бұрын
@@rcgrabbag, 8 ft is not bad. Still, the bigger the room, the higher the ceiling should be. I bought a house and removed the old ceiling to expose the beams; the ceiling is now 9.5 ft from the floor in the 13 x 13 ft rooms and completely removed above the kitchen and dining room to make the space even more generous and relaxing. Nevertheless, the time you managed to build the house is impressive; and the layout - even more than that! What you will achieve there will become a landmark.
@rcgrabbag3 жыл бұрын
@@hntrains2 I think a lot depends on the purpose of the room and your personal preferences. I don't think a railroad room benefits from high ceilings. You typically want lighting closer to the layout and often install valances even closer to the layout. We have 15ft high ceilings in certain living spaces in the house if I need vertical relief. Thanks for checking in and glad you enjoyed the video :-) I hope I can do the scenery and detailing justice!

I'm also a real man and jelous. The only thing I would have done different with this build is to put a metal roof on the build. They have metal in shingle looking coated steal and it looks just like the regular shingle. Don't know what insulation you used but I would have used 2 pound closed cell foam for the thermal break and the insulation it would give. Also there is no plastic barrier needed...

Thanks for watching! Blocks were done by guys with literally decades worth of experience so I'm assuming they know what they're doing. The trusses where designed to contain another room in the 'attic' area so I assume there's a lot because of the structural needs of a floor, walls, etc., but I know little about house construction.

Not a very ingenious construction - especially the roof. What a waste of space and wood. And that I - steal beam resting on thin posts. Was this the calculated minimum ? Flimsy constructions would never pas in EU. Was the wind resistance calculated ?
@rcgrabbag3 жыл бұрын
Filip 36 Where to start...Firstly, if you paid attention to the video, you would have seen that the roof trusses actually contain space for a third room. Yes, the roof contains a room. Second, the so called thin posts? What do you consider thin? They are steel and more than adequate to support the weight above. If flimsy construction consists of 2x6 wall studs and 2x12 floor joists 12 INCHES ON CENTER then I’ll take my methods over your EU any day. And wind resistance? Let’s see, the original house has stood for over 30 years so, uh, I think we’ll be fine lol!
@phil363103 жыл бұрын
Still, was this all calculated ?
@rcgrabbag3 жыл бұрын
Filip 36 I know you’re looking for flaws, but the roof pitch is typical for housing in my area of the country, so yes it’s calculated based on virtually unlimited empirical data that exists. As for the rest of it, it was designed by a professional architect and meets or exceeds all modern construction code. That’s the extent of it that I know.
@timeflysintheshop3 жыл бұрын
I think in Europe they are accustomed to less wood and more masonry in their buildings. This building was well built. I have seen some flimsy looking construction, but not this one! A waste of wood? It literally grows on trees! LOL. I crack myself up😂. Besides, for the hundred years or more that this structure stands, all the carbon in that wood is sequestered from the atmosphere. The lumber company will plant more trees to soak up more carbon and turn it into more lumber. This is not lumber poached from a rainforest. Its grown like any other crop but with thirty years between harvests.
