using obsolete tech like big floppies is actually a security feature now... nobody can hack them without being physically on site.

@canwefixit8129
@canwefixit8129 4 ай бұрын
@@Jinkypigs A floppy disk is made with 7 very basic simple components. Its consists of a magnetic disk, shutter, spring, hub, paper rings, write-protect tab and a plastic flap. A USB drive consists of a motherboard, memory chips, controller chip, capacitors, resistors, crystal oscillators and however many other components a manufacturer decides to put on it. A floppy disk can easily be repaired without losing any of the stored data. A USB drive can easily have one of many components fail which would result in all data being lost. He was also referring to obsolete tech in general and that was just one example. I think the main point he was getting at is modern day hackers are born into the world of high speed internet and probably have not even used a operating system as old as Windows XP let alone the operating systems our nuclear silos are using from the 70s. Using old tech is a safety features because there is not many people in todays world that would know how to hack it or even use it for that matter. Those old systems are strictly offline and locally networked whereas modern military systems are networked through military satellites etc and are vulnerable to potential attacks. Older systems are also way more reliable and simple which makes them easier to maintain and keep running. The reason they still use a computer thats 50 years old is in contrast by the fact its 50 years old and it still works. Go buy a modern laptop from best buy and tell me if it still works 50 years later. As the old saying goes if its not broke dont fix it. Its just like how the USA was using Russian Soyuz capsules to get to and from the international space station for decades and only up until recently did they start using spacex etc to shuttle astronauts to the space station. They did that for the exact same reason, The Soyuz ran off of computers from the 70s and they never updated it because why update something and make it more complicated and unreliable when it works perfectly fine and has had nearly a 100% success rate. Its been through all the testing, they know how it works and how to fix any issues. Why slap in a modern computer system that has 100x more components that can fail and a less likely chance that the average technician can fix it?

Also those big floppies have been proven in service for decades. We know they work. Any replacement new system will definitely have bugs, and you don't want to unnecessarily introduce bugs in a system that controls thousands of nukes. Hard to think of a situation the term 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' applies to more.

One thing to note: they still use the old style computers on purpose. The tech is so old its incompatible with modern systems, meaning its all but impossible to hack, and they require physical access to specific data disks In fact, 5' flopy disks are the most advanced. Most use punch cards.

Thank God it wasn't armed and thank God for that man he saved lots of life's that day including my father's since he closed the blast doors containing the explosion......I've always wondered if Germany knows they almost had a nuclear explosion in their country? @justanoman6497 I didn't say he averted a nuclear explosion. The conventional explosion was enough to kill a lot of people. KZbin has a sense of humor. Directly following "kilt him a b'ar when he was only three", I got a commercial that began, "This is the quickest way to clear out stuck poop."

My grandpa was a welder next to the Rocky Flats nuclear fires. The fallout gave him a lot of weird side effects and he was apparently part of a study about the long term effects and he was permanently disabled. Several years later they moved to Arkansas near the nuclear plant. What are the odds of him almost getting ended by it twice 🤷‍♀️ any family living near the fire got some crazy medical conditions like 5 miscarriages, lupus, large holes on his body like the flesh/muscle was all burned threw. My grandpa died before I was born but learning about it was crazy

Yes, and yet, the nuclear stuff probably still hasn't been fixed because we're sending DoD money to countries like Israel and Ukraine.

@@SmallSpoonBrigade Ukraine is being invaded by Russia, The US military's entire raison detre is to counter Russian military expansion, I wouldn't compare that to helping Israel perpetrating its genocide.

PSA: Read the Headline, this is a rerun of Season 1 Episode 12 from 2009. The gaza part made me think it was a new episode for a sec, but with only 1000 dead, what a time to be alive, or unalive if you live in gaza.
