Since creating this series we’ve learned a lot about the use of the word tribe and we fully respect the cultural significance attached to it and have decided not to use it in our channel name going forward! Much love y’all!
We sail out into the sunset....well motor actually. Regardless, we're headed out for some Island Time! Even if just for the weekend...for now, we escape to Treasure Island and Clipper Cove for a couple of chill nights at anchor. Paddle boards, beach time, reading and rum! It also happened to be the last weekend of the month which means that the Treasure Island Flea was under way! (Now, called the Treasure Fest)
We'd never been to the little art show before but we'd sailed past a month earlier and saw a great line up of food trucks, bars and heard live music playing. Of course we knew we needed to head back for an adventure!
Clipper Cove is actually one of our favorite places to boat to as it is a beautiful sail or only about a twenty minute motor over from our slip at Emery Cove. There is something really different about our mindset when we're at anchor out away from the dock. For one, we don't have endless electricity or water. We're forced to think about how much of both of those precious commodities we consume. We spend a lot less time online and more time laughing together and reading and playing in the sand. That's the good stuff.
There's more to it than that though. A while back, Jen's Great Uncle Robert told us some stories about the 'Great San Francisco World Fair' that was held on Treasure Island in 1939 and 1940. He told us it was the first time he'd seen a video camera work. His father was in one room and waved at the camera while he was in another and he could see him on the screen. He was overwhelmed with fascination. I came home and hopped online to find some absolutely amazing footage. I've included some of it in this episode.
I also found some footage that showed Clipper Cove in 1939 or the early 1940's which revealed how it got it's name. The founder of Pan American Airlines built boats that were made to fly from the US all the way across the Pacific Ocean. He named them Clipper Planes, in the hopes that people would associate them with the Clipper Ships that were well known to be the great ocean liners of the maritime world. I often sit in our cockpit and gaze out over the water imagining one of those giant, old planes revving it's engines up for a take off across the Pacific, toward Hawaii. Crazy!
We also stumbled across a simple advertisement which was run during the exposition that read, "Don't Fail to Visit the Incubator Babies - On the Gayway - Kept alive in incubators. Worlds tiniest little babies born prematurely. Truly authentic - ethnically operated." What TF?! As you can imagine, Jen gasped, got up from the table and stomped off. I too was shocked that this could have possibly been real and went straight to Google. This article from BBC titled, 'How One Man Saved A Generation of Premature Babies', tells a bit more of the story and explains things in more detail. Yikers!
There is so much more fascinating history about Treasure Island, Yerba Buena and Clipper Cove. If it's interesting to you, go check out the Treasure Island Museum website.
We hope you enjoy this episode and would definitely appreciate a share. Thank you all for the nice comments as well. Super helpful and supportive!

I hope you all get a kick out of seeing some of this 30's and 40's era footage! To walk around Treasure Island now, you would be hard pressed to imagine how lively it was back then. The anchorage here is great as well. Ranges from calm and quiet, to chock-a-block and raucous. We're up for all of it. If you've been here, share your stories here in the comments!

Creating memories for your daughter and yourselves. She will always love sailing when she is an adult. I know I was raised pretty much on the boat for 8 yrs and younger when we had a fire in the house. We kept our sailboat in Ballena Bay Marina we also traveled to Angel Island, Potato Slough and stayed for weeks that was my favorite place. Stars were incredible in the 70's went to Glen Cove, Spin drift and Monkey Island But still had a great time. I had so many friends that were liveaboards as well as weekenders. I was friends with owners as well as with their kids when I was a kid. I assist people docking and passed out Christmas Cookies that my mom made to our friends and the harbor master. Now I have a 1987 O'day 272 that I take the grandkids on and go sailing in Michigan. I hope they will love the water and boating as much as I do. Fair winds with following seas thank you for sharing your adventures as well brought tears in my eye when I saw the delta through your lens reminds me of my younger years. Take care

Adi Srikantha Ha, yes we are! We're also a little bit country, a little bit mountains and a little bit islands! We dove right in here though and we're making the most of our time in the Bay area! Hey thank you so much for letting us know you like the historical footage. Means a lot to know there's interest in that, out there! What kind of boat do you have?

Ha! Thanks for the comment. When I first saw it pop up on my phone I thought, 'old footage'? It was only from last year! ;) Then I realized you meant the old footage of the Clipper planes and the World Fair. Yeh, I love that history over there. Thanks again!

Hi you All! What great laid back video. You gave us a new destination and interest in learning about Treasure island. I did not know anything about it and now I already really like it! We are headed to the boat in a few days so we will checking out Clipper Cove soon. Thanks and keep up the great times and videos, Blair and Bella

Bullseye - Sweeeeet! That's the goal. There is SO much more interesting stuff about it. We didn't even touch on the military seizure from the city or anything about the whole flat part, Treasure Island, north of Clipper Cove anchorage being completely human made as opposed Yerba Buena, which you'll see rising to the south, which is the natural part of the island. There's a fun winery walking distance too. Enjoy!

Hi there. In the 80's I worked at LaGuardia Airport in NYC. The company I worked for kept their planes in the old Marine Air Terminal hanger. This building originally housed the Pan Am Clippers for their Trans Atlantic flights. There were ramps with tracks embedded in them to roll the dollies the Clippers were placed upon. They would roll the out of the bay, across the tarmac and into the hanger. The shop we used was used as the propeller shop. Pretty interesting stuff. Sorry this was so long. Thanks for the video!
